Choose Django when you want a broad web framework with an integrated staff admin and user-authentication system. Choose FastAPI when an API-first workflow, awaitable endpoint dependencies, and OpenAPI-based documentation are central. Both support asynchronous work, but neither framework makes every operation non-blocking by default.
How do Django and FastAPI differ?
Django is a broad web framework with built-in conventions and facilities for database-backed applications, including an admin site and authentication system. FastAPI is centered on defining API operations and provides an OpenAPI schema and interactive API documentation. Django can also power APIs, commonly with Django REST Framework (DRF), an additional toolkit rather than Django core.
The practical choice is about the shape of the application and the work each framework already does for you—not a universal ranking of speed or capability.
Does Django support async?
Yes. Django 6.0 supports asynchronous views and asynchronous ORM query variants. Its fully asynchronous request path depends on deploying under ASGI and using compatible middleware. Django can run async views under WSGI too, but that does not provide the benefits of a fully asynchronous stack or efficient handling of long-running requests. Django recommends ASGI for long-lived requests such as streaming and long-polling.

Mind the ORM and synchronous code
Query-producing ORM operations have asynchronous, a-prefixed variants, and QuerySets can be iterated with async for. Some APIs remain synchronous or async-unsafe. Call synchronous-only functions through sync_to_async() or keep the work in a synchronous helper rather than calling them directly from async code. Django warns that setting DJANGO_ALLOW_ASYNC_UNSAFE in production can cause data loss or corruption under concurrent access.
Middleware affects the request path
A synchronous middleware component in an ASGI request path is adapted in its own thread. That means the middleware chain, as well as the view and its dependencies, matters when assessing how asynchronous the application really is.

How does FastAPI handle async endpoints?
FastAPI allows both async def and ordinary def path operations. Follow the library you call: use async def when the dependency supports await, and ordinary def when the library is blocking and has no awaitable interface. Mixing the two styles is supported.
Declaring an endpoint async does not make a blocking database driver, HTTP client, or other dependency non-blocking. Compare the complete dependency stack, not just endpoint syntax. Django and FastAPI documentation does not establish a controlled, like-for-like performance winner; if throughput or latency is decisive, benchmark your own workload and deployment.

FastAPI’s documented core feature set focuses on APIs, security utilities, asynchronous handling, and API documentation; it does not include a Django-style integrated model admin. If staff need to manage records in a FastAPI application, plan on choosing a separate admin interface or building a separate application. Third-party packages may exist, but they are not the same as a built-in Django feature.
Django’s admin is designed for trusted staff to manage registered model data. Django’s documentation is explicit: “The admin is not intended to be used by users to manage their own data.” Treat it as an internal administration tool, not a finished customer-facing product interface.
How do authentication and authorization compare?
Django
Django provides a configurable authentication backend system, a user model, and built-in permissions. Its default ModelBackend checks the Django user database and permissions, but does not provide brute-force rate limiting by itself; projects can add rate limiting in a custom backend or use web-server mechanisms. Django’s bundled authentication backends have native async support. If you extend one, keep modified async methods aligned with their synchronous counterparts.
FastAPI
FastAPI’s security utilities are designed to be composed into path operations through dependencies. They provide building blocks, not a complete user-management product or a single prescribed identity system. The application team must select and implement or integrate the authentication scheme, identity and token handling, and authorization rules it needs.

Django REST Framework APIs
For APIs built with Django, DRF offers configurable authentication schemes and permission policies. Authentication identifies credentials associated with a request; permissions determine whether that request should be allowed. For AJAX APIs using session authentication, unsafe methods require a valid CSRF token.

Both can be used to build APIs. FastAPI is a natural fit when API route definitions, request handling, and generated OpenAPI documentation are central to the workflow. Django can serve API workloads too; teams often add DRF for API-specific authentication and permission policies. When comparing the two, account for the whole stack rather than attributing DRF features to Django core.
Which should you use?
| Project need | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Staff need to manage application records | Django includes a configurable model admin for trusted internal users. |
| You need users, sessions, permissions, and backend hooks | Django supplies core authentication and authorization components; assess any extra requirements such as brute-force rate limiting. |
| The product is API-first and needs generated API documentation | FastAPI’s API-oriented workflow and OpenAPI documentation may fit well. |
| Async performance is a major requirement | Inspect database drivers, external clients, middleware, and synchronous code across the whole request path; framework syntax alone is not enough. |
| You already operate a Django application | Existing models, admin workflows, authentication, and team practices can affect migration and delivery effort. |
In short, prefer Django when its integrated features reduce work for a broader web application. Consider FastAPI when an API-first design and its endpoint and documentation workflow better match the service. Either can be appropriate for APIs, and both can contain synchronous and asynchronous parts.
