Good Django interview answers explain how the framework’s parts work together and when a choice depends on the application. The examples below cover core concepts, practical trade-offs, and version-aware answers you can adapt rather than memorize.
How to answer Django interview questions
Give the direct definition first, then connect it to a request or a design decision. For example, explain what a model does, how a URL reaches a view, and where validation belongs. When behavior can vary by release, name the Django version you have used and check the project’s documentation for that series.

What is Django?
Django is a Python web framework with connected tools for defining application data, routing requests to views, processing forms, and managing authentication. A useful interview answer describes the pieces you would use for the application instead of claiming Django is universally the fastest, safest, or best framework.

A model defines application data in Python. Django’s object-relational mapper (ORM) provides an API for working with that data in a database. In an interview, describe the entities and relationships your application needs, then explain how you would query them; “models map to tables” alone says little about your design.
#1 Best Overall
The ORM handles ordinary database access, but it does not prevent an application from using SQL when a particular case calls for it. The right answer is not that one approach must always replace the other.
How do URL patterns and views work together?
A URLconf associates URL patterns with view callables. A pattern can capture part of a URL—for example, an integer identifier—and pass the captured value to the view. Naming a route gives it an application-level name, which can be used when referring to that route. The view handles the request for the matched URL.
Rank #2
A concise interview explanation might be: “The URLconf routes a request to a view, optionally passing captured values such as a record ID. The view then decides how to handle that request.”

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat are Django forms for?
Django forms can render HTML, validate submitted data, and convert valid values into native Python types. A ModelForm derives a form from a model and can support creating or updating model-backed records.
Make the flow explicit in your answer: validate submitted data, then decide whether and when the application should persist it. A form’s validation role and the application’s persistence decision are related, but they are not the same explanation.
What does Django’s authentication system include?
Django includes support for user accounts, groups, permissions, and cookie-based sessions. Authentication establishes a user’s identity; authorization determines what that user is allowed to do. Explain where the application checks access to a view or operation, and tie version-sensitive details to the project’s Django release.
How should I compare function-based and class-based views?
Frame this as a choice about the shape of the task, reuse, and readability for the team—not as a universal winner. A function-based view may be a straightforward way to express a particular request flow; a class-based view may suit a design that benefits from organizing or reusing behavior. Explain which style you would choose for the example at hand and why.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn either case, be prepared to describe how the request is handled and where shared behavior belongs. The best interview answer makes the trade-off understandable without assuming that one style is always simpler or more maintainable.

Which database should a Django application use?
Django uses SQLite by default. Its FAQ recommends PostgreSQL for production and lists MariaDB, MySQL, SQLite, and Oracle as supported databases. These facts do not make one database the right choice for every deployment: explain the application’s operational and deployment requirements before recommending one.
Which Python versions work with Django?
The Django FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, lists these combinations:
| Django series | Python versions listed |
|---|---|
| 5.2 | 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, 3.14 |
| 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 | 3.12, 3.13, 3.14 |
Python 3.14 support was added in Django 5.2.8. These are version-specific compatibility facts, not a guarantee for every patch release or future series. Before upgrading, confirm the exact Django release and Python version against the Django FAQ.

What is changing in Django’s release schedule?
In an announcement dated August 10, 2026, Carlton Gibson said the Django Steering Council had accepted DEP 20. The plan is to begin one feature release per year in January 2028, with three years of support for each feature release. That is an announced future schedule, not a change that has already taken effect. See the Django release-schedule announcement for the project’s wording and details.
How can I prepare answers that show practical understanding?
- Start with a precise definition, then describe how the concept fits into an application flow.
- For design choices, state the requirements that influence your decision rather than declaring a universal winner.
- For version-dependent details, name the Django series and verify compatibility or behavior in its documentation.
- Use a concrete example—such as a URL that captures a record ID—without claiming that a particular question is guaranteed to appear in an interview.
The official Django documentation provides the versioned reference for these framework concepts.
