In a 2026 account, How-To Geek author Goran Damnjanovic repurposed a 256GB Steam Deck SSD this way. His experience is encouraging, but it is not a controlled test showing that DIY SSDs are always faster or better than USB flash drives.
What the DIY SSD build involves
A bare 2230 SSD is not plug-and-play portable storage. It needs an external enclosure that accepts the drive’s form factor and interface, then connects to your computer or other host. Damnjanovic installed the spare 256GB 2230 SSD from a Steam Deck upgrade in a compact USB-C enclosure.

His enclosure was aluminum, with a multicolor activity LED, a magnetic cap and a short thermal pad. He says he left the pad unused. The practical buying search is 2230 NVMe SSD enclosure USB-C 10Gbps; before buying, check the enclosure’s supported SSD form factor and interface, as well as the connection your host can use. The similar Amazon model mentioned in the article was not necessarily the exact enclosure he tested.

Large files
In his own tests, large multi-gigabyte sequential transfers came close to the enclosure’s 10Gb/s connection limit. That is an author-reported result, not an independently verified benchmark or a promise that a particular SSD, enclosure and computer will reach the same speed.

Many small files
Transfers involving many smaller files were about half as fast in the author’s tests. If your typical job is copying folders of documents, photos or other small items, do not assume the near-limit large-file result describes your experience.
Heat during use
The enclosure warmed during transfers, but Damnjanovic says it did not feel uncomfortably hot in the test he described. That is a subjective observation; the article reports no measured temperature.

Will it work across your devices?
Damnjanovic formatted the SSD as exFAT and reports using it with Windows PCs, a Mac mini and two Android phones. His Mac mini initially did not work with the drive; formatting it on that Mac resolved the problem in his setup. Treat that as a useful compatibility clue, not a guarantee: results can depend on the drive, enclosure, device and format.
He used the portable drive to move game files and screenshots among handheld gaming PCs and a desktop. For a similar workflow, check both the host’s supported storage formats and whether it can provide the connection the enclosure needs.

USB flash drive or DIY SSD: which should you choose?

The DIY route is most compelling if you already have a compatible SSD and want a reusable drive for substantial transfers. If you would need to buy both the SSD and enclosure, this account does not establish that the build is cheaper than a ready-made drive. For occasional small-file copies or a setup that needs USB-A built in, a flash drive may be simpler.
What to check before assembling one
- SSD fit and interface: Match the enclosure to the drive’s form factor and interface; “2230” alone does not confirm compatibility.
- Host connection: The reported enclosure lacks USB-A. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter or hub is an optional workaround if your computer has no USB-C port, not a required part of the build.
- Formatting: exFAT worked across the author’s reported devices after the Mac mini-specific formatting issue was resolved. Confirm the format your own devices support.
- How you carry it: If you use a lanyard or keyring, a hole on a magnetic cap is a potential weak point; do not rely on it to secure the drive.
What the build cost at the time
The author reported paying the equivalent of about $12 for his enclosure on Temu. His August 2026 article cited about $19 in the US for a similar enclosure on Amazon. Those are article-time claims, not current offers, and the Amazon enclosure was described as similar rather than confirmed to be the tested model.
