A festive home refresh does not require replacing furniture or planning a major makeover. In her Hindustan Times Brunch column, Seema Goswami recommends a handful of modest updates—from cushion covers and table linen to repurposed textiles and plants—to give familiar rooms a different feel for Diwali.
Goswami’s approach is incremental: make a few deliberate changes that work together rather than trying to redo an entire room. Give the dining table a new colour scheme
A new tablecloth paired with coordinating placemats and napkins can make the dining area feel more festive without replacing the table. Goswami presents new crockery as an optional, larger step—not a prerequisite for the refresh.
Reuse textiles as window or wall decor
Look at what you already own before buying curtains or art. Goswami suggests using an old sari as a sheer at a window, or framing a particularly beautiful scarf as wall decor. The ideas turn existing textiles into visible features; the column does not specify how to hang or secure them, so choose a method suitable for the fabric, window and room.
