The Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure (DIVD) says an attacker breached its network in September 2026 by chaining two previously undisclosed Zammad vulnerabilities. DIVD attributes the operation to an agentic AI-powered attack, but the cited disclosures do not identify the attacker or independently establish how autonomous the operation was. The organizations also disagree about the scope of one vulnerability, while Zammad says it cannot verify the second without technical details.
What happened in the DIVD breach?
According to DIVD’s incident timeline and updates, malicious access began on 21 September 2026. DIVD detected suspicious activity the next day, blocked access to its datacenter systems, and started incident response and forensic work with Merlon Security. DIVD said its response and network segmentation prevented the attacker from moving further into the network, although some damage had already occurred.

DIVD says the attacker entered through two Zammad zero-days. The organization describes a chain that enabled session hijacking, remote code execution as the Zammad application user, and escalation to root within seconds, followed by access to other services and data exfiltration. “Within seconds” is DIVD’s description of the sequence, not a separately measured incident statistic.

- 21 September: DIVD records the first malicious access.
- 22 September: DIVD detected suspicious activity, blocked access to its datacenter systems, and began incident response with forensic support from Merlon Security.
- 24 September: DIVD says it reported the vulnerability to Zammad, notified partners and affected parties, and issued its first public statement.
- 26 September: DIVD opened its vulnerability case, began scanning for publicly exposed vulnerable Zammad instances, and started notifying owners.
- 29–30 September: DIVD published its case account, attributed the breach to two Zammad flaws, and assigned CVE-2026-102489 and CVE-2026-102490.
- 1 October: DIVD said volunteer data had been exposed while the precise scope remained under investigation; Zammad published its response to the vulnerability reports.
How did DIVD say an AI agent breached it?
DIVD’s account characterizes the operation as agentic: it says scripts used in the attack contained explanatory notes and showed what DIVD described as autonomous decisions about what to do next. DIVD also described the attack as automated and fast-moving. Those observations explain why DIVD assessed the operation as AI-driven; they do not, by themselves, establish who operated it, which AI system was involved, or the degree of human oversight. BleepingComputer’s contemporaneous report relays DIVD’s account, rather than independently resolving those questions.

Which Zammad versions are affected, and is Zammad 7 safe?
DIVD and Zammad give different accounts of CVE-2026-102489’s scope. Their 1 October disclosures also differ in how they describe the status of CVE-2026-102490. The available statements do not resolve that disagreement.
| Question | DIVD’s account | Zammad’s account, 1 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-102489 | DIVD lists versions 6.3.0–6.5.4 as affected by a flaw that can lead from session hijacking to remote code execution as the zammad user. It also lists 7.0.0–7.1.3 as containing the flaw, but says it is not exploitable there because of environmental conditions. |
Zammad says only versions 6.5 and older are exploitable, and that versions 7.0 and later are not affected. It says hardening is included in 7.2.0. |
| CVE-2026-102490 | DIVD describes a local privilege-escalation issue allowing a local zammad user to become root, and lists versions v1.5.0 through v7.1.0-alpha. |
Zammad says it had not received technical details from DIVD and therefore could not verify the vulnerability, its scope, or the affected versions. |
The table reflects the organizations’ stated positions, not an independent resolution. In particular, DIVD’s advice to upgrade to Zammad 7 should not be read as proof that version 7 fixes both reported issues. Zammad’s 1 October statement says 7.2.0 was its current stable release and recommends that version, but the cited material does not establish a later verified fix for CVE-2026-102490. Check current DIVD vulnerability updates and Zammad advisories and statements before deciding that an installation is no longer exposed.

What data was exposed?
In its 1 October update, DIVD said volunteer data was exposed, including DIVD email addresses and possibly contact details. It had not established exactly whose information was taken or precisely what data was exfiltrated, and its investigation remained open. DIVD warned that exposed contact information could make it easier to impersonate volunteers and advised people to check with DIVD if a message seems suspicious. The disclosure does not establish that all data on DIVD’s systems was taken.
What should Zammad administrators do?
The two organizations published different guidance in disclosures dated 1 October 2026. Because the vulnerability scope is disputed and can change as the investigation develops, administrators should consult the latest official instructions before acting.

- DIVD: Advises upgrading to Zammad 7 or taking the instance offline. It also provides a log-check script for reviewing Zammad logs for indicators of compromise.
- Zammad: Recommends updating to 7.2.0, described in its 1 October statement as the current stable release at that time. It says versions 6.5 and older no longer receive security fixes, and asks users to follow its advisories for updates on CVE-2026-102490.
These are source-attributed recommendations, not a shared assurance that a single version or action addresses both reported flaws. If an instance cannot be updated or safely assessed, DIVD’s stated containment option is to take it offline; administrators should use the official case and vendor guidance for current scope, remediation, and log-review instructions.
