For the Event ID 10016 cases Microsoft documents, the fix is usually to do nothing. Microsoft says these warnings are expected, do not adversely affect Windows functionality, and can be safely ignored. If you only want to reduce clutter in Event Viewer, you can optionally filter matching entries; changing DCOM permissions is not recommended.
What Event ID 10016 means
Event ID 10016 is a warning from Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM. It records a COM server activation or launch permission mismatch, along with details such as a CLSID, APPID, requesting account or security identifier (SID), and activation type.

Microsoft explains that the documented events occur when a Microsoft component first attempts activation using one set of DCOM parameters and then retries using another. Microsoft describes that behavior as expected and by design. Its troubleshooting article states: “These events can be safely ignored because they don’t adversely affect functionality and are by design.”

Confirm that you are looking at the documented event
- Open Event Viewer and select Windows Logs > System.
- Find the entry with source Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM and event ID 10016.
- Open its General or Details fields. Note the CLSID, APPID, account or SID, and whether the message refers to Local Activation, Local Launch, or machine-default permissions.
Those identifiers help establish which event you are viewing. Different 10016 entries can contain different identifiers, so do not assume that a GUID or account shown in an online example matches your PC.
Should you try to repair it?
If the entry matches the cases covered by Microsoft’s guidance, no repair is needed. Repeated entries do not, by themselves, change that recommendation: Microsoft says the documented events do not adversely affect functionality.
If the computer also freezes, crashes, loses audio, or has application problems, investigate those symptoms separately. Their timing alongside a 10016 entry does not establish that the warning caused them.

Advanced users and IT professionals can create a custom Event Viewer filter with an XML query to suppress specified 10016 entries from the view. This is a display-only measure: it does not repair Windows, change DCOM permissions, or resolve an unrelated fault. Event Viewer labels can vary by interface version, and Microsoft’s guidance describes the XML approach rather than a separate Windows 11 click-by-click walkthrough.

Microsoft’s sample query places a <Suppress> clause under the System log query and matches Event ID 10016 plus event data. In that sample, param4 is the COM server CLSID, param5 is the APPID, and param8 is the security context SID. The sample contains specific GUID and SID values; use them only if they match the entries you intend to hide. Otherwise, adapt the filter to the values in your own event record.
Why changing DCOM permissions is not the recommended fix
Some troubleshooting guides advise taking ownership of registry keys or changing launch and activation permissions in Component Services. Microsoft does not recommend changing permissions to address the documented 10016 events: those entries do not adversely affect functionality, and permission changes can have unintended side effects.
If you have already changed permissions and new problems followed, avoid making further changes based only on the warning text. Choose a Windows recovery option or seek administrator support based on the problems you can reproduce, not on the presence of the event alone.
