DISM error 0x800f0906 means Windows could not download the content it needed to repair the image. It does not, by itself, mean the image is beyond repair. Start with Microsoft’s standard DISM-then-SFC sequence; if the download fails again, check update access and policy, then point DISM to a suitable local or network source.
What does DISM error 0x800f0906 mean?
Microsoft maps 0x800f0906 to CBS_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE, a “Failure on content download for Feature on Demand or Inbox Corruption Repair.” In some feature-installation scenarios, Windows displays “The source files could not be downloaded.” Both descriptions point to a failure to obtain repair content; they do not identify the specific cause on your PC. The source may be Windows Update, an alternate repair location, or a source selected by device policy. Work through the following checks in order; an alternate source only helps if it is reachable and contains files suitable for the Windows image being repaired.

1. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
For a running Windows installation, open Command Prompt as administrator and run Microsoft’s standard online repair command:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Allow the operation to finish, which may take several minutes. Record the exact final message or error code before changing the repair source. In Microsoft’s consumer workflow, DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default. Microsoft Support: Using System File Checker in Windows; Microsoft Learn: Fix Windows Update corruptions and installation failures.
2. Run System File Checker after DISM
Once DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
SFC checks protected Windows system files and attempts repairs using the component store. Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first, then SFC; do not reverse the sequence. Microsoft Support: Using System File Checker in Windows.

Because the code indicates a content-download failure, check whether the PC can reach the source configured for repair. If you are using the default Windows Update source, investigate whether update access is interrupted or restricted before trying unrelated system changes. For guidance on Windows Update corruption and installation failures, see Microsoft Learn’s troubleshooting page.

On a work- or school-managed PC, Windows Update, WSUS, and Group Policy settings may control where repair or optional-feature content can be downloaded. Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 guidance describes a policy that can prevent downloading payloads from Windows Update when an alternate source is absent or invalid. Ask your IT administrator to review the approved source and policy rather than bypassing organizational controls. Microsoft Learn: .NET Framework 3.5 deployment errors and resolution steps.
4. Scan the image and check its repair status
If you need to assess the online image before another repair attempt, run these commands in an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
/CheckHealth checks whether Windows has flagged corruption as repairable. To perform a more thorough scan, run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
If the image is repairable, /RestoreHealth performs repair operations. These commands target the currently running Windows installation through /Online; an offline image uses different target syntax. Do not substitute an offline /Image: command for the online instructions here. Microsoft Learn: Repair a Windows Image.

5. Provide a suitable alternate repair source
If Windows Update cannot supply the needed files, DISM can use a suitable Windows directory from another location. Microsoft documents a working Windows installation, a mounted image’s Windows directory, a network share, or Windows installation media as possible sources. The source must contain the content needed by the target image; a Windows folder is not automatically suitable just because it exists.
For an online repair, Microsoft gives this example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. Replace it with the actual Windows directory containing appropriate source files. For a mounted image, use the mounted image’s Windows directory. In its network-source example, Microsoft says the working source computer should run the same operating system version as the target. The exact compatibility requirements can depend on the repair case; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal recipe for every edition, architecture, build, or image index. 6. Verify that the source matches the target
A source that is inaccessible or lacks the required content will not resolve the download failure. Before retrying, verify that the affected PC can access the chosen source and that the source is suitable for the Windows image being repaired. Microsoft specifically says the working source computer in its network-source example should run the same operating system version. For other source types, the needed edition, architecture, build, and image index can vary by case; confirm that the chosen files include what the target needs instead of assuming any Windows ISO or install.wim will work. Microsoft Learn: Repair a Windows Image; Microsoft Learn: Fix Windows Update corruptions and installation failures.
7. Inspect DISM and CBS logs
If the repair still fails, check the logs for details about the operation, package, or source. Microsoft identifies these locations:
%windir%LogsDISMdism.log— DISM operation details.%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log— Component-Based Servicing details; Microsoft recommends analyzing it when a restore operation does not complete successfully.
Search around the time of the failed command for the error and related source or package messages. The log entries from your PC are needed to identify its specific failure; the error code alone cannot establish whether the cause is network access, policy, or a mismatched source. Microsoft Learn: Fix Windows Update corruptions and installation failures.
8. Respond appropriately if the image is non-repairable
Microsoft’s image-servicing guidance says a non-repairable image should be discarded and started again in that image-servicing context. That is not a blanket instruction for every Windows user to reinstall the operating system: first distinguish an image reported as non-repairable from a repairable image whose operation failed because content could not be downloaded.
