Disk Drill is CleverFiles’ data-recovery app for Windows and macOS. It can scan supported storage for deleted or lost files, but it cannot guarantee recovery: success depends on the device, file system, and whether the data has been overwritten or cleared. Before scanning, check the Recycle Bin or Trash and your backups, stop using the affected drive, and plan to save recovered files somewhere else.
What Disk Drill does—and what it cannot promise
Disk Drill scans supported storage for files that may still be recoverable. CleverFiles describes both file-system-based recovery and signature scanning, which looks for recognizable file patterns when file-system metadata or partitions are missing or corrupted. A scan result is not proof that a file can be restored completely or opened successfully.

Deleted data may remain available until the storage location it occupied is overwritten, but this is not unconditional. New writes can overwrite recoverable content, and SSD TRIM may clear freed blocks. CleverFiles says no data-recovery software can promise a 100% chance of success. Its explanation of deleted-file recovery is that data can remain recoverable until the same physical location is overwritten; that describes the general mechanism, not a guarantee for every file or device. See its product overview and drive-support guidance.

- Check the simple recovery options first. Look in the Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash, then check backups or synced copies. Restoring an intact backup is generally safer than scanning the original drive.
- Stop writing to the affected storage. Avoid downloading, installing, copying, or saving files to it. If the lost files were on the computer’s system drive, minimize use of that computer; installing recovery software onto the same drive can overwrite data.
- Install and scan from a different disk where practical. Connect the affected drive to another computer or use another suitable destination for the recovery application, rather than adding writes to the source.
- Use Disk Drill’s scan and preview to assess the files. Find the correct disk or volume, run a scan, and check whether the target files appear and can be previewed. A preview helps assess the result but does not guarantee that the recovered copy will be complete or usable.
- Recover to a separate physical disk. Do not save recovered files back onto the drive being scanned. Use a separate destination drive, such as an external recovery drive or external SSD, with enough free space.
If the drive is unreadable, making unusual noises, disconnecting, or otherwise appears physically damaged, stop repeated scan attempts and consider a professional data-recovery service. Software cannot repair physical damage simply by scanning it.

Windows and Mac editions are not identical
CleverFiles’ comparison page, updated June 13, 2025, describes Disk Drill 6.0. It says the Windows and Mac editions have different interfaces and recovery backends, so do not assume that a feature or workflow on one platform is available in the same way on the other. The listed system requirements and license terms below are from that dated comparison and may change; check the current requirements before installing or buying.
| Item | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system listed by CleverFiles (June 13, 2025 comparison) | Windows 10+; Server 2016+ on x64 | macOS 10.15+ |
| Free tier described by CleverFiles (FAQ marked updated October 17, 2025) | Unlimited previews and up to 100 MB of recovery | Preview files; recover only files protected in advance by Recovery Vault or Guaranteed Recovery |

Free-tier limits and system requirements are vendor-stated details, not guarantees of recovery. Check the Disk Drill FAQ and free-tier information and the Mac and Windows comparison for current terms. The comparison listed US$89 per year or US$149 for a lifetime license in June 2025; those are dated figures, not verified current prices.

What storage and file systems does it support?
CleverFiles lists internal and external hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, flash drives, memory cards, digital cameras, virtual hard drives, RAID arrays, and disk images among Windows recovery sources. Its support material discusses FAT variants, exFAT, NTFS/NTFS5, ReFS, HFS/HFS+, APFS, EXT2/3/4, BTRFS, and RAW volumes. This is vendor-described support, not confirmation that every device, file system, or damaged file will be recoverable. Check the exact source device and file system against the supported drive and file-system information.

What does independent testing show?
TechRadar’s review reports one Windows 11 test on a system with 16 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-12500H. The reviewer moved 22 mixed-format files to a 1.36 TB NTFS hard drive, deleted the folder, emptied the Recycle Bin, scanned the drive, and reported recovering all 22 files. TechRadar also describes a repeat test on local PC drives with similar results, while noting that external-drive scans were slower than some peers. These are outcomes from the reviewer’s specific tests, not a general success rate or a promise for a different drive, file system, or deletion scenario. Read the TechRadar Disk Drill review for the test details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you choose another recovery route?
- Try the Recycle Bin, Trash, or a backup when the file may already exist in an ordinary recovery location or backup. This avoids unnecessary writes and scans.
- Consider Windows File Recovery if you want Microsoft’s free command-line alternative. CleverFiles describes it as offering unlimited recovery with basic scans; it is a different, command-line workflow.
- Consider a professional service if the storage appears physically damaged or is not reliably readable. Further use can make recovery harder.
- Compare software carefully if another product is under consideration. Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery, Wondershare Recoverit, and Stellar Data Recovery are named as alternatives by CleverFiles, but current plans and comparative test results are not established here.
For any recovery route, compare support for your exact device and file system, preview and free-recovery rules, the ability to save to a separate disk, and how the option handles SSD/TRIM, encryption, physical damage, or an unreadable drive. Check current pricing and licensing directly before purchase.
