Are Discord themes safe?
For the lowest-risk supported customization, use Discord’s built-in Appearance settings. Discord’s help article describes standard themes and custom themes for Nitro subscribers; those settings do not require installing client-modifying software.

A third-party theme mod adds a separate trust and policy question. Discord’s Terms of Service, accessed October 7, 2026, prohibit “using any unauthorized software designed to modify the services.” The license section also says users may not modify Discord software unless Discord gives written consent or applicable law permits it. Discord’s Platform Manipulation Policy Explainer, dated March 15, 2024 and marked current, says client modifications for spam or any other reason are not allowed under that policy.

BetterDiscord’s own FAQ answers “Is BetterDiscord against Discord’s Terms of Service (ToS)?” with “Yes.” This makes the distinction clear: BetterDiscord is a third-party customization option, not a Discord-approved theme system.
These sources establish the written policy, not a specific enforcement outcome. They do not quantify enforcement for theme-only modifications, so it would be misleading to promise that a user will or will not be banned, or to give a ban probability.

What customization does Discord include?
Standard Appearance settings
Discord’s Appearance guide, updated June 27, 2026, lists these theme choices:
- Desktop: Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, and Sync with computer.
- Mobile: Light, Dark, Midnight, and Automatic.
The same guide covers zoom, chat font scaling, message spacing, and message display choices. Discord notes that themes can look different on mobile and desktop. If “Sync across clients” is enabled, themes can sync across desktop, mobile, and browser.

Nitro custom themes
Nitro subscribers can choose additional themes and create custom ones using color selection and gradients. Discord lets users choose a Dark or Light palette, select colors with a color picker or hex code, and adjust gradient direction and intensity. A custom gradient can contain up to five colors.
Nitro custom themes may affect mobile when cross-client sync is enabled. Discord says subscribers can share, preview, and apply custom themes on desktop and browser; mobile is limited to previewing and applying them. Non-Nitro users can preview available themes on desktop, but the help article describes applying custom themes as a Nitro feature.

Nitro and Nitro Basic are not interchangeable for themes
Discord’s Nitro feature comparison lists Color Themes and Custom Themes as Nitro perks. It lists app-icon customization among Nitro Basic perks, but does not list custom themes among those Basic perks. Changing an app icon is not the same as changing Discord’s app-wide colors and gradients.

You can preview available custom themes on desktop without Nitro, according to Discord Support. Applying custom themes is presented as a Nitro feature. Without Nitro, you can still choose from Discord’s standard Appearance options, which differ between desktop and mobile.

What risks remain with third-party themes?
BetterDiscord describes its themes as CSS client customization. Its theme guidelines prohibit add-ons that negatively affect users—for example, by posing ban risk, disabling security features, or accessing private information. They also prohibit collecting user data without opt-in consent, discourage encouraging further Terms violations, and require trusted external resources.
Those guidelines are BetterDiscord project rules for themes submitted to its repository, not Discord approval. Screening can reduce some code and usability risks, but it cannot remove the conflict with Discord’s written restrictions or guarantee that a theme is safe. A theme that loads outside resources also requires trust in those resources and their operators.
How do I change Discord themes?
Use the supported Appearance settings
- Open User Settings. On desktop, select the gear icon next to your username. On mobile, open your profile or settings screen.
- Open Appearance. Choose the theme and display options available on that device. Desktop lists Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, and Sync with computer; mobile lists Light, Dark, Midnight, and Automatic.
- For a custom theme, use Nitro settings. Select a Dark or Light palette, choose colors or enter hex codes, then adjust gradient colors, direction, and intensity.
- Set cross-client sync if needed. Discord says enabled “Sync across clients” can sync themes between desktop, mobile, and browser. Check how the selected theme appears on each device because presentation may differ.
