If Discord isn’t picking up your microphone, first check whether the mic works in another app. Then confirm your operating system allows Discord to use it, and select and test the right input in Discord. These checks help narrow down whether the problem is the headset, a privacy setting, Discord’s voice setup, or a mute or channel permission.
1. Check the microphone, connection, and hardware mute
Before changing software settings, find out whether the microphone works at all. Discord recommends testing it in another app and checking the headset connection. Discord’s voice, video, and streaming guide also suggests trying another USB port.

- For a USB or 3.5 mm headset, make sure the plug is fully seated. If you have another suitable port, try it.
- Check for a mute switch or button on the headset, cable, or microphone.
- Record or make a test call in another app that can use the microphone.
If there is no input in other apps either, focus on the physical connection and the device’s system audio settings or driver. Discord’s troubleshooting guide includes updating system and audio drivers, but these checks cannot identify a failed component remotely. See Discord’s guide and its input and voice issues article.
2. Allow microphone access in your operating system or browser
A microphone can appear in Discord’s device list and still be blocked by a privacy permission. Check the operating system’s microphone controls, and if you use Discord in a browser, check the browser’s permission for the Discord site too.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone for the desktop Discord app.
Microsoft documents these separate switches in its microphone permissions instructions.
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone and enable microphone access for the device and apps. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s permissions page.

macOS, iOS, Android, and browsers
Allow microphone access for Discord in your device’s privacy or app-permission settings. On mobile, Discord directs users to the operating system’s permission controls; its voice, video, and streaming guide includes mobile guidance. In a browser, also allow microphone access for the Discord website using the browser’s site-permission controls.

Desktop app or browser
- Open User Settings > Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, choose the physical microphone or headset by name instead of relying on Default.
- Check Input Mode. Choose Voice Activity if you want Discord to transmit when you speak, or use Push to Talk only if you intend to press its configured key while speaking.
- Run Mic Test using Let’s Check, if shown, and speak into the microphone.
A responsive test indicates Discord is receiving microphone input, but it does not confirm that you are unmuted or allowed to speak in a particular server or channel. Discord’s Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide and input and voice issues article describe device selection and testing.

Mobile
Open your avatar, tap the gear, then go to Voice. Check the input mode and any available device settings, and make sure Discord has microphone permission in the phone’s settings. Discord’s mobile voice troubleshooting guide also recommends checking Wi-Fi versus mobile data or disabling battery saver for broader voice-call problems; these are supplemental checks when the microphone itself is working but a call is disrupted.
If Discord detects your mic but nobody can hear you
Check Discord’s local mute state and whether the server or channel permits you to speak. A working mic test does not override those controls. Discord notes, “Remember that server permissions might affect your ability to speak,” in its voice troubleshooting guide.

If the three checks do not fix it
- Restart Discord and your device, then repeat the input test.
- In the desktop or browser client, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging and use Reset Voice and Video Settings. This resets Discord’s voice settings.
- If the problem persists on desktop or browser, Discord’s troubleshooting also lists switching Audio Subsystem to Legacy and turning off Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority as additional diagnostic options. The exact layout can change between client versions.
- If the mic still is not detected, contact Discord Support. Include your device, operating system and app version, whether you use desktop, browser, or mobile, your input and output devices, and screenshots of Voice & Video settings.
