If your Discord bot process is still running—or its profile still looks online—but commands and events get no response, check the layers separately: the host process, Gateway connection, event or interaction delivery, handler, and Discord API response. An online indicator alone cannot confirm that the bot is healthy.
Why a running or online bot can still be silent
A process monitor only tells you that an application process exists. It does not establish that the bot has a working Discord Gateway session, is receiving the event you expect, can run its handler, or can send a successful API response. Discord describes Gateway heartbeat acknowledgements as a connection signal, while also warning that a connection can become “zombied.”

Presence is not a reliable substitute for those checks. Discord says closing a Gateway connection with code 1000 or 1001 invalidates the session and makes the bot appear offline. If the TCP connection closes without those codes, or another close code is used, the session can remain active until it times out after a few minutes. That delay can make the online indicator lag behind a failure. See Discord’s Gateway documentation.

Choose one command or event that should work, note its time and location, then follow it through the system. Record the last confirmed step rather than treating “not responding” as a single diagnosis.

- Confirm the process is healthy. Check process uptime, recent restarts, CPU and memory pressure, and standard output and error logs. Look for the bot library’s ready or connected event after the most recent restart. Exact commands and log locations depend on your operating system, process manager, and library.
- Check Gateway heartbeats and reconnects. Find the last Heartbeat ACK, disconnect close code, reconnect attempt, and any session resume or new Ready event. Discord sends a
heartbeat_intervalin the Gateway Hello event; clients must use the interval received for that connection, not assume a fixed value. The documentation’s sample value of45000milliseconds is an example, not a universal setting. Missing an ACK between heartbeat attempts can indicate a failed or zombied connection. Discord says clients should expect and handle regular disconnects. - Verify the event can be delivered. Identify the event that should trigger the behavior and check that the corresponding intent is included at Identify. Discord says events associated with an omitted intent are not sent. For privileged intents, check the app’s current Developer Portal settings and eligibility; unconfigured privileged intents can close a connection with code
4014, and invalid intents can close it with4013. Intent access rules can change; consult the official Privileged Intents guide. - For slash commands, check registration and permissions. Confirm the application command is registered in the scope where you are testing it: global or guild-specific. Then check whether application-command permissions allow the user, role, channel, and command. Trace the interaction from receipt to handler start and response attempt. Command registration uses HTTP, so a command setup issue is distinct from whether the Gateway connection is live. See Discord’s application-command documentation.
- Check access to the target. Verify that the bot is still installed in the server, has the necessary permissions in the target channel, and is trying to act in the channel you intended. Treat these as checks, not proof of a particular cause.
- Inspect the outbound result. Log the HTTP status and relevant response headers for each failed API call. A handler may run correctly but fail to send its response. Use the status and response to distinguish authentication or access errors from rate limits instead of retrying blindly.
Use Discord API errors to choose the fix
429 rate limits
For a 429 response, inspect X-RateLimit-Scope and retry_after, then wait for the specified delay before retrying. Avoid a retry loop that keeps issuing requests while the limit is active. Discord Developers Support’s rate-limit guidance describes a global limit of 50 requests per second across most endpoints and an invalid-request threshold of 10,000 per 10 minutes. The same article, published in 2025, says unhandled spikes of 401, 403, or 429 errors can contribute to the invalid-request limit, which may result in a temporary Cloudflare ban; shared-scope 429 responses are excluded. These figures and guidance are volatile, so check the current article before relying on them.
401 and 403 errors
A 401 points you toward authentication, such as an invalid or out-of-date token; a 403 points toward an access or permission failure. Read the actual response and correct its cause rather than repeatedly resending the same request. Never put a bot token in logs, screenshots, or a support post.

Match the remedy to the evidence

Changing hosts is relevant only when evidence points to process uptime, resource limits, or deployment connectivity. A hosting change will not by itself repair an omitted intent, a stalled handler, a missing command registration, or an API permission error.
What to capture before escalating
If the evidence points to a Gateway or Discord-side problem, preserve timestamps, close codes, heartbeat ACK history, reconnect and resume events, and outbound request statuses. Include sanitized request IDs or logs where available, but remove tokens and other secrets. For unresolved global rate-limit issues, Discord’s rate-limit guidance directs developers to its support channel.
