Direct mobile billing lets you pay for an eligible purchase by adding the cost to your mobile phone bill or deducting it from prepaid credit. It is also called direct carrier billing (DCB) or direct operator billing. Whether you can use it—and what you can buy, how charges are verified, and how subscriptions are handled—depends on the carrier, merchant, market, and service.
How does direct mobile billing work?
At a supported checkout, you select mobile billing. The merchant or its payment intermediary may check whether your phone account and purchase are eligible, then route the transaction through arrangements with your carrier. The charge is added to a monthly bill or taken from prepaid balance. The exact steps vary: you may be asked to enter a phone number or confirm the purchase through another method.

A text message is not required for every direct carrier billing transaction. The FTC describes billing flows that can take place through a website or app without a text exchange. FTC recommendations on mobile cramming
One operator’s example
BT describes a flow in which a customer selects mobile payment and enters a phone number on an intermediary’s page. The intermediary encrypts the number, checks eligibility, and processes the charge to the phone bill or prepaid credit. BT says the bill shows the service name and merchant contact details. These are details of BT’s implementation, not rules that apply to every carrier or service. BT mobile payments

What can you pay for?
Supported purchases depend on the carrier and merchant. BT lists digital purchases such as music subscriptions, apps, charitable donations, games, TV services, ticketing, and parking. Maxis’s terms describe use for digital content and physical products. Neither example means all carriers support all of those categories. Check the payment options and terms shown at the specific checkout. BT mobile payments · Maxis DCB terms
Are charges one-time or recurring?
Either is possible. BT says its service supports one-time and recurring payments, while Maxis’s terms cover content purchases and subscriptions. Before confirming a recurring charge, check the amount, billing frequency, cancellation method, and which company manages the subscription. The cancellation route and any spending limits vary by provider and market. BT mobile payments · Maxis DCB terms

How does it differ from other payment methods?
The main practical difference is where the charge appears: direct mobile billing places it on a carrier bill or deducts it from prepaid credit, rather than charging a payment card or bank account directly. It can be convenient when a supported checkout offers it, but it is not available for every carrier, merchant, or purchase. To compare options, check where charges appear, which merchants and purchases qualify, how recurring billing and cancellation work, what limits apply, and how refunds or unauthorized charges are handled.

Check the bill entry for the service name and any merchant contact information. Then contact the carrier or merchant through its official support channel to ask what the charge relates to and how to dispute it or stop further billing. The responsible party, refund route, and applicable protections depend on your provider’s terms and local rules.

The FTC has warned about unauthorized third-party charges on mobile bills, often called mobile cramming. In a 2014 statement, Jessica Rich, then director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said the issue had affected millions of consumers. That is a historical statement, not a current estimate of how frequently unauthorized charges occur. FTC press release, 2014
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do direct mobile billing services have universal limits?
No. Limits and transaction figures published by one provider should not be treated as industry-wide figures. BT’s API Developer Portal, accessed in 2026, advertises a £240 spend limit and attributes 160 million transactions a year across more than 3,000 services to its third-party payment APIs. Those are BT-specific claims, not a universal cap or a direct-carrier-billing market total. BT API Developer Portal
