DigitalOcean Bandwidth Limits for Continuous YouTube Live Streaming Explained

Short answer: DigitalOcean Droplets have plan-based monthly outbound transfer allowances pooled across a customer team’s Droplets. A continuous YouTube stream can use that pool quickly: a 10 Mbps stream running for 30 days sends about 3,018 GiB of video payload, before overhead and other traffic. Outbound transfer above the pool is billed at $0.01 per GiB. That monthly allowance is separate from a Droplet’s maximum network throughput.

What DigitalOcean’s bandwidth limit means

For a Droplet sending a YouTube ingest stream, the relevant monthly limit is its team’s pooled outbound transfer allowance. The allowance contributed by each Droplet depends on its plan; DigitalOcean’s current pricing page lists allowances beginning at 500 GiB per month, while its listed 1 GiB Basic plan includes 1,000 GiB per month. Check the live Droplet pricing page for the allowance attached to the plan you select.

DigitalOcean adds the allowances and usage of Droplets on the same customer team together. A streaming Droplet can therefore use more than the allowance associated with that individual Droplet if other Droplets leave room in the team pool. Unused transfer does not roll over to another month or transfer between teams. DigitalOcean documents a charge of $0.01 per GiB for Droplet outbound transfer above the pool. Check your team’s billing view and current projected usage rather than treating one Droplet’s allowance as an isolated quota. DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation explains how usage is counted.

What counts toward the pool

  • Data sent through a Droplet’s public network interface counts toward the team’s outbound transfer pool; this includes use of the public interface over IPv6.
  • Data arriving at a Droplet is free under the stated transfer rules.
  • Traffic between Droplets using the VPC private interface is distinct from traffic sent through the public interface.
  • Other public-interface egress from the team’s Droplets, as well as a simultaneously transmitted backup stream, can contribute to the same usage picture.

Monthly transfer is not the same as network throughput

A transfer allowance measures data accumulated over a billing period. A throughput ceiling is a maximum network rate at a particular time. DigitalOcean’s limits documentation lists maximum rates of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets, 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets, and 10 Gbps over public connections for GPU Droplets (25 Gbps over VPC). Traffic above applicable throughput limits may be rate limited. These ceilings are not monthly data quotas, and a high ceiling does not increase the plan’s included monthly transfer. See DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits documentation for the applicable limits.

Using decimal Mbps and binary GiB, one continuous Mbps for 30 days is about 302 GiB; a continuous 10 Mbps stream is about 3,018 GiB. This is arithmetic from bitrate and time, not a DigitalOcean guarantee or a complete bill estimate. Actual transfer may differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, stream configuration, backup encoders, and other outbound workloads.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. It also recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total streaming bitrate. If primary and backup streams are both being sent at once, include both in the required outbound capacity and transfer estimate. The headroom recommendation concerns available upload capacity; it does not reduce the number of bytes the configured streams transmit. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance and its streaming tips.

Worked example: 10 Mbps for 30 days

One Droplet sending a 10 Mbps stream without interruption for a 30-day month sends approximately 3,018 GiB of video payload. Compared with a hypothetical 500 GiB pool, that is about 2,518 GiB beyond the pool. At DigitalOcean’s documented $0.01 per GiB overage rate, the arithmetic would be $25.18 in overage, before other Droplet contributions, other outbound traffic, protocol overhead, or billing details affect measured transfer. This is an illustrative calculation, not a quoted bill. The actual overage depends on the whole team pool and its measured usage.

Check whether your team has enough allowance

  1. Identify the stream’s settings. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, configured bitrate, and expected streaming hours in the billing period. Use the encoder’s actual bitrate where available.
  2. Calculate each stream’s payload. Apply the formula above to the primary stream and any backup encoder that will transmit concurrently.
  3. Add other public egress. Include other workloads and Droplets sending data through public interfaces; do not count inbound traffic as outbound usage.
  4. Compare against the team pool. Add the allowances contributed by all Droplets on the team and compare the total with team-level usage and projections in DigitalOcean billing. The billing view is updated daily.
  5. Check rate capacity separately. Ensure the Droplet’s available outbound throughput can support the total concurrent bitrate with YouTube’s suggested 20% headroom. A sufficient monthly pool does not guarantee enough instantaneous upload capacity.
  6. Verify YouTube readiness. YouTube says live-stream setup requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. DigitalOcean bandwidth availability does not establish YouTube account eligibility.

DigitalOcean and YouTube figures can change. Confirm the current plan allowance, team usage, and YouTube encoder guidance before budgeting a long-running stream.

Troubleshooting transfer and stream problems

  • Projected transfer is higher than expected: Confirm the encoder bitrate and actual running hours, then account for concurrent backup streams, reconnects, and other public-interface egress from the team’s Droplets. Compare with the team-level billing view rather than one Droplet’s individual allowance.
  • You are seeing overage despite a small streaming Droplet: The team pool includes allowances and usage across its Droplets. Check all team Droplets and remember that unused transfer does not roll over from a previous month.
  • The stream drops even though monthly transfer remains: Remaining transfer does not prove adequate instantaneous throughput or a healthy encoder connection. Check the applicable Droplet throughput ceiling, available upload capacity with headroom, encoder stream health, and YouTube account eligibility.
  • A backup stream changes the estimate: If the primary and backup encoders transmit at the same time, include both bitrates in bandwidth-capacity and transfer calculations. Do not count a standby that is not transmitting as if it were continuously sending video.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating your own always-on Droplet and encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
