In film and television, visual effects (VFX) combine or alter footage and digital imagery to create shots that would be costly, dangerous, impractical, or impossible to capture as filmed. In an editing app, “video effects” can also mean operations such as transitions, cropping, or changing a layer’s opacity.
What are visual effects (VFX)?
Autodesk defines visual effects as the process of altering, creating, or enhancing imagery for live-action media when it could not be captured during filming because doing so would be costly, dangerous, impractical, or impossible. In practice, VFX may combine recorded footage with digital elements, or modify footage to produce a finished shot.

For example, a performer filmed in front of a green screen can be isolated from that background and composited into a digitally created environment. The finished shot is a visual effect; the environment is computer-generated imagery, or CGI; and the green screen is a physical production technique.

How are VFX, CGI, and SFX different?
| Term | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| VFX | The broader process of creating, altering, or enhancing visuals for moving images, often by combining filmed footage and digital elements. | Putting a digitally created environment behind a filmed performer. |
| CGI | Imagery created digitally. It can be one component of a VFX shot, but does not describe the entire process of integrating it with footage. | A digitally modeled and animated creature. |
| SFX | In this distinction, practical special effects captured during filming without computer assistance. | A physical set or practical effect recorded on camera. |
Everyday conversation sometimes uses these terms loosely. Keeping them separate is useful: CGI describes digitally created imagery, VFX describes a visual-effects process, and practical SFX are created physically for the camera.

What is VFX compositing?
Compositing is the process of combining separate visual elements into one coherent image. Those elements might include live-action footage, a green-screen replacement, or computer-generated imagery. The compositor adjusts how the layers fit together so the final frame reads as a single shot rather than as unrelated pieces.
Motion tracking can help align a digital element with movement in the filmed scene. Lighting and shading adjustments help generated elements fit the appearance of the footage. These are ways to make the combined image more coherent; they are not a requirement that every simple video effect involves 3D work.

How are digital video effects made?
- Prepare the elements. Create or source what the shot needs, such as live-action footage, a 3D model, or animation.
- Track and align. When the footage or camera moves, motion tracking can help position digital elements in relation to that movement.
- Composite the layers. Combine the elements, such as layering CGI over footage or replacing a green-screen background.
- Adjust the composition. Depending on the task and software, editors can change transforms, crop an image, animate opacity, or control the timing of layers.
- Render and review when needed. Rendering produces the final moving image in workflows that require it. A basic edit or transition does not necessarily need a complex 3D render.
Are editing effects the same as VFX?
Not always. In everyday software use, “video effects” can refer to editing operations such as transitions, image adjustments, masks, text, cropping, transforms, and layer changes. A transition between two clips is a video effect in this broad sense. Creating a digital object and integrating it into live footage is more specifically described as VFX.

The practical distinction is the task: ordinary editing effects change or connect video elements, while VFX commonly involves creating or substantially altering imagery and integrating it into a shot.

What can video-effects software do?
Capabilities depend on the application and the effects installed. Apple’s video-composition documentation describes operations such as transforms, cropping, opacity, timing, transitions, and custom compositors. Adobe notes that the effects available in Premiere depend on installed effect files, and that some effects support high-bit-depth processing. These differences mean an editor should not assume that every application offers the same effects or processing options.
When choosing a workflow, start with the result you need: a transition or image adjustment, motion graphics, green-screen compositing, or 3D imagery. The more a task depends on integrating digital elements with moving live-action footage, the more important tracking, compositing, and compatibility between tools become.
