Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) is a family of open technical specifications for delivering digital television and related media over satellite, terrestrial broadcast, cable and broadband networks. It is not a single signal format, codec or subscription service: the relevant DVB system depends on how a service reaches you and what your equipment can receive.
What does DVB stand for?
DVB stands for Digital Video Broadcasting. The term refers both to the industry project that develops the specifications and, more commonly, to the family of technical rules it creates. In practical terms, DVB is a rulebook family that helps broadcasters and equipment makers deliver and receive digital television across different networks.

The specifications address more than the transmission signal. Depending on the service, the broader system can involve coding, service information and discovery, security, and interactive features. A programme’s resolution or picture quality is not determined by the DVB label alone.

Which networks use DVB?
DVB systems are organized around different delivery methods. The letters and numbers identify distinct systems or generations, not interchangeable versions of the same receiver standard.

| Delivery network | DVB family | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite | DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-S2X | DVB-S was the first DVB satellite transmission specification. DVB-S2 is its second-generation successor, and DVB-S2X extends DVB-S2. ETSI publishes DVB-S2 as EN 302 307-1 and DVB-S2X as EN 302 307-2. ETSI satellite standards |
| Terrestrial broadcast | DVB-T, DVB-T2 | Digital television delivered over terrestrial broadcast. DVB-T2 is designed to support combinations of SD, HD, UHD, mobile TV and radio services, using configurable parameters and OFDM modulation. DVB-T2 overview |
| Cable | DVB-C, DVB-C2 | Digital television transmission over cable networks. DVB describes DVB-C as a widely used cable standard; that description is not a precise current market-share measurement. DVB standards overview |
| Broadband and IP | DVB-NIP, DVB-I | DVB-NIP addresses native IP broadcasting. DVB-I provides service discovery and metadata for services delivered across converged networks. DVB standards overview |
How is DVB different from a codec or TV service?
DVB is not a codec such as MPEG-2 or H.264/AVC, and it is not the programme being watched or the company selling a subscription. It describes technical systems and related specifications used in the delivery chain. A particular service can combine a transmission system with codecs, metadata, conditional access and receiver capabilities.
For example, the question of whether a television supports DVB-T2 concerns terrestrial signal reception. It does not, by itself, establish which video codec the service uses, what image resolution it offers, or whether the service requires a subscription.

Who creates DVB standards?
The DVB Project is an industry-led consortium that develops technical specifications in response to market needs. System specifications are developed through the EBU/CENELEC/ETSI Joint Technical Committee Broadcast, based on proposals from the DVB Project. ETSI publishes the resulting work in different forms, including technical reports, technical specifications and European Standards; those labels refer to distinct publication types and should not be treated as synonyms. ETSI: Digital Video Broadcasting
The DVB Project reports that more than 1.5 billion DVB receivers are in use. This is the consortium’s own figure; its homepage does not specify a measurement year or describe the count as independently audited. DVB Project

What is DVB on my TV?
A DVB label in a television’s specifications usually identifies the broadcast systems its tuner is designed to receive. The exact meaning depends on the suffix: DVB-T2 indicates terrestrial reception, DVB-S2 satellite reception, and DVB-C cable reception. A device marked simply “DVB-compatible” may not support the particular system used where you live.
To check compatibility, identify the type of broadcast available in your area, then match that system to the TV’s tuner specifications. If the television lacks the right tuner, a compatible set-top box may provide reception, but the box must support the local broadcast system too.

What is the difference between DVB-T2 and DVB-S2?
DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 serve different networks. DVB-T2 is for terrestrial broadcasts received through an antenna; DVB-S2 is for satellite transmission. The “2” indicates a generation within each family, not compatibility between them. A DVB-T2 tuner is not a substitute for a DVB-S2 tuner, and vice versa.
When comparing equipment or service details, check three separate things: the delivery network, the system generation, and the receiver’s supported tuners. A match on one does not guarantee a match on the others.

Do I need a DVB-T2 receiver?
You need a DVB-T2-compatible tuner only if you want to receive terrestrial broadcasts that use DVB-T2 in your location. This capability may be built into a television or provided by a separate receiver. Local deployment varies, so check the broadcast system used in your area before buying equipment. Antenna requirements also depend on local reception conditions; no single antenna configuration is right for every location.
