Yes—you can turn a computer you already own into a digital sign by opening a browser-based player, pairing it with a signage dashboard, and publishing content. The display still needs a connected computer or supported device, and a quick browser setup is not automatically reliable enough for an unattended, always-on screen.
What “digital signage in the browser” means
The browser or signage app runs on the device connected to your display; a cloud dashboard is where you create and manage what appears on screen. You open the player on the display-side device, pair it with your account, then publish content. Fugo, for example, offers both a Chrome extension player and a web player opened in a browser tab. You may be able to use a spare laptop, desktop, mini PC, or compatible ChromeOS device rather than buying a new player. Fugo lists laptops, desktops, and mini PCs for its Chrome extension, while NoviSign describes software players for Windows, Android, and ChromeOS. The device must still connect to and drive the screen; NoviSign describes an HDMI connection. NoviSign’s digital signage software overview
Choose a player that suits the screen
| Player type | Setup and best fit | Reliability and management |
|---|---|---|
| Browser web player | Open a player URL and pair it. Fugo describes its web player as a zero-install option, making it useful for a trial, demo, or temporary screen. SignPX describes browser pairing by code. | SignPX says its web player requires a constant internet connection and does not recommend it for 24/7 commercial use. That is a vendor-specific statement, not a universal browser limitation; confirm the behavior of the service you choose. SignPX |
| Chrome extension player | Install the extension, open its player window, and pair it. Fugo positions this for a laptop, desktop, or mini PC left running as a dedicated screen. | Fugo says its extension adds persistent startup behavior and more reliable remote screenshots compared with its plain web player. It still depends on a browser window, and managed-device policies may block extension installation. Fugo says the extension is officially built and tested against current Google Chrome; other Chromium browsers are not its supported option. Fugo’s Chrome extension overview |
| Managed ChromeOS kiosk deployment | Configure the ChromeOS device to launch the signage app through kiosk management. Comeen describes administration through Google Admin. | Comeen describes remote monitoring and local storage that continues playback through internet loss. These are Comeen’s product claims; assess the fit with your organization’s ChromeOS management setup. Comeen Play |
| Installed player software | Install the platform-specific player on a supported Windows, Android, or ChromeOS device. NoviSign documents these platform options. | NoviSign says its player caches content locally. Offline playback and recovery depend on the specific software and configuration, so verify them with the provider. NoviSign’s digital signage software overview |
Set up a browser-based digital sign
- Connect a device to the display. Use a computer or other device supported by your signage service and connect it through a suitable video connection. NoviSign describes connecting its player device to a display with HDMI. Make sure the display is set to the input the device uses. NoviSign’s setup overview
- Choose the service and player mode. A web player is a quick way to try a setup without installing software. If you want a more persistent setup on a computer, consider a supported extension or installed player. For Fugo’s extension, use Google Chrome; Fugo does not list other Chromium browsers as supported. Fugo’s Chrome extension overview
- Open the player and pair the screen. The pairing process varies by service. Fugo’s extension displays a four-digit PIN: add a physical screen in Fugo CMS and enter that PIN. Fugo also offers a web player that you open in a browser tab and pair. NoviSign’s documented flow uses a unique Player Key from its dashboard after the device is connected to the display. Fugo’s pairing instructions NoviSign’s player setup
- Create and publish content. Use the service dashboard to create or upload content, arrange it into playlists, and publish or schedule it for the paired screen. Fugo describes browser-based design, playlists, scheduling, and centralized screen management. Fugo’s platform overview
- Test the actual operating conditions. Before leaving the display unattended, check whether the player starts after a reboot, recovers after internet loss, allows remote screenshots or a remote restart, and keeps the screen awake. Also confirm that your organization permits the required extension or kiosk configuration. Fugo’s extension notes Comeen’s ChromeOS deployment overview
Will it keep playing if the internet goes down?
That depends on the player, not simply on the fact that the setup uses a browser. NoviSign says its player caches content locally, and Comeen says its ChromeOS solution stores content locally and continues playback through an internet outage. SignPX says its web player needs a constant internet connection. These are provider descriptions, not independent reliability tests, so confirm the offline behavior of your chosen player and test it with the content and device you will use. When is existing hardware enough?
For a temporary screen or a trial, a spare computer and a web player may be all you need. For a screen that should start consistently and stay unattended, investigate startup behavior, remote management, offline playback, and sleep settings before committing to a player mode. A Chrome extension may add persistent startup behavior, while managed ChromeOS kiosk deployments and installed players offer different management and offline options; their capabilities vary by provider.
A mini PC for digital signage is one possible permanent setup, not a requirement. Fugo names mini PCs among devices suitable for its extension, and NoviSign discusses Windows mini-PC deployments. Check whether a spare laptop, desktop, Chromebox, or supported display browser already meets your needs before purchasing hardware. Fugo’s supported devices NoviSign’s platform overview
