A digital measuring tape can mean a contact tape with an electronic display, a laser distance meter, or a hybrid tool combining a blade and laser. The term is not a single, standardized product design. The right type depends on whether you need to measure along a surface, across an open space, or both.
What does “digital measuring tape” mean?
With a traditional retractable tape, you extend a marked blade along or around an object and read the measurement. A digital contact tape adds electronic readout or calculation features. A laser distance meter instead measures from one point to another without extending a blade across the gap. Some hybrid tools combine a physical tape with laser measurement, though their functions vary by model.

A laser distance meter sends a beam toward a target, detects the reflected light, and calculates the distance electronically from the time between sending and receiving the signal. It then shows the result on its display in supported units, which may include meters, centimeters, millimeters, inches, or feet. Bosch describes the measurement process.

What can it measure?
Laser distance meters are useful for point-to-point measurements such as room lengths and heights, including when planning furniture placement or estimating flooring and paint needs. Depending on the exact model, additional modes may include continuous measurement, area, volume, or Pythagorean calculations. These functions are not universal.
Some tools combine laser measurement with attachments for other jobs. Bosch’s Zamo Set, for example, has a line attachment for levelling, a wheel for curves and uneven surfaces, and a 1.5-metre tape attachment for measuring freestanding objects and circumferences. A hybrid device may also include features such as a digital blade readout, hold, re-zero, and unit conversion; check the model’s documentation rather than assuming every tool offers them.

Digital measuring tape versus a physical tape
A laser reading is point to point, so it does not follow the shape of a surface. For measuring around a pipe, along a curve, or around a person or object, a physical tape is generally the fitting method. Bosch specifically describes its Zamo tape attachment as intended for objects and circumferences.

What specifications should you check?
- Measurement method: Confirm whether the tool has a contact blade, laser, or both.
- Range and stated accuracy: These vary by model. Bosch lists its Zamo Set with a 25 m range and stated ±2 mm accuracy, and the PLM30-21 with a 20 m range and stated ±3 mm accuracy. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
- Functions: Check whether the specific model supports the area, volume, indirect-measurement, memory, hold, or unit-conversion features you need.
- Target and access: Make sure the target can be reached and is suitable for the measurement method.
- Display, units, attachments, and power: Verify the supported units, readability, included accessories, and power source for the exact model.
Laser safety depends on the model
Follow the safety instructions in the manual for the exact device. One SISCO product manual, for example, identifies its instrument as a Class 2 laser and tells users not to look directly into the beam. That classification and wording should not be assumed to apply to every laser distance meter.
