It may be a simple image or a richer format such as animation, video, multimedia, or an interactive experience. Unlike a paper card, it does not have to be printed, mailed, or handed over.
What is a digital greeting card?
A digital greeting card is a message for a greeting-card occasion that exists in digital form and reaches its recipient electronically. The defining distinction is the medium and delivery: digital content sent electronically rather than a physical card delivered by hand or post.

Digital cards can be made for birthdays, holidays, congratulations, thank-yous, or other occasions, just as paper cards can. Their format varies; animation, video, and interactivity are possible features, not requirements.

What is an e-card?
E-card is a common short name for a digital greeting card. It does not mean only a picture attached to an email. Depending on its format and the service used, an e-card might be viewed on a webpage, sent by email or mobile message, or include multimedia elements.

What forms can a digital greeting card take?
Examples include:
- Static cards: a digital design with text and images.
- Animated cards: designs that include moving elements.
- Video cards: cards combining video with personalized text.
- Multimedia cards: web-based designs that may combine backgrounds, images, animation, and text.
- Interactive cards: experiences that invite the recipient to take part, such as an e-card game.
- Mobile e-cards: cards designed for mobile devices or delivery through mobile messaging.
These are examples of possible formats, not a checklist every e-card must meet. The Government of India’s eGreetings manual also illustrates a portal-based approach: users browse greeting categories and send a selected card. Its historical usage figures should not be read as current adoption data. National Informatics Centre, Government of India, eGreetings User Manual.
How do digital greeting cards work?
A sender chooses or creates digital greeting content and delivers it electronically. The exact steps depend on the card’s format and service: a card may be shared through a website, sent by email, or delivered through mobile messaging. Some services provide categories to browse and send; others may support different personalization or media options. An app, account, attachment, animation, or particular delivery channel is not essential to the definition.

How is an e-card different from a paper card?
| Feature | Digital greeting card | Paper greeting card |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Digital content | A physical item |
| Delivery | Electronic, such as through a website, email, or mobile messaging, depending on format and service | Hand-delivered or mailed |
| Possible elements | May include images, animation, video, multimedia, or interactive features | Printed design and message |
Both can communicate a greeting, but the digital card’s defining feature is electronic delivery; the paper card is a physical object. USPS quoted Harlem, Montana, Postmaster Janet Egeland saying, “I still send greeting cards and enjoy receiving them.” That is her personal preference about mailed cards, not a technical definition or evidence about how widely either format is used. USPS, “Greet news,” September 20, 2019.
Can a greeting card be sent by email or text?
Yes. An e-card may be sent by email or mobile message when its format and the service support that route. Other digital cards may be shared or viewed through a website. The word “e-card” describes the digital greeting, not one required method of delivery, so check the specific service for its supported channels and any recipient requirements.

Is USPS Informed Greetings an e-card?
Not in the sense of a fully digital greeting card. USPS describes Informed Greetings as adding a personalized digital message to a recipient’s Informed Delivery email when a physical greeting card arrives. The experience combines an electronic message with a physical card, so it is better understood as a postal hybrid than as a synonym for an e-card. USPS, “Innovation in the mail,” July 9, 2025.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is not established about digital greeting cards?
The available sources do not establish a current, representative figure for how many people use digital greeting cards or what share they account for compared with paper cards. Physical-card sales, postal delivery counts, and historical totals from a government eGreetings portal do not measure current e-card use. Nor is there a supported basis here for naming a leading provider or ranking services.
