A file hash helps check whether data changed; a browser fingerprint combines observable device and browser traits; and a media fingerprint helps recognize audio, video, images or text. They work on different inputs and should not be treated as the same technology.
What does “digital fingerprint” mean?
The meaning depends on what is being fingerprinted. In one context, it is a digest calculated from a file. In another, it is a profile assembled from a browser’s observable characteristics. For media, it is a signature derived from selected features of the content. Each produces a representation that can be compared with other data, but the method and what a match means differ.

| Type | What is fingerprinted | What a match is used for | Can changed content still match? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hash or file fingerprint | A message, file or other data | Checking data integrity or comparing it with a known digest | A changed bit produces a different digest under the behavior described by NIST; hash choice and collision risk depend on the algorithm and application. |
| Browser or device fingerprint | Observable browser and device characteristics | Recognizing or linking a browser, device or visitor | Changes to the environment can alter signals, but a fingerprint may still enable correlation; the result depends on the signals used. |
| Digital-media fingerprint | Features of audio, video, images or text | Finding or recognizing matching or similar content | Some systems can recognize altered or similar material, such as a screen recording of a film or a cover version of a song. |
How does a file hash work?
A hash function processes input data and returns a digest, also called a hash value or message digest. Software can compare that digest with a known value to check whether the data matches. This is useful for detecting file changes: NIST’s glossary says that changing a single bit in the input stream yields a completely different digest. NIST defines a digital fingerprint in its CSRC glossary as a hash that identifies data; NIST notes that its glossary definitions should be read in the context of the underlying source documents.
A digest is a compact comparison value, not a promise that every possible file has a globally unique fingerprint. Whether collisions matter depends on the hash function and how it is used. A digest comparison can show that data differs from a known version, but it does not explain why it changed or establish that a file is safe.

How does browser fingerprinting work?
A website or embedded script can collect observable traits from a browser and device, then combine them into a profile that may help identify or recognize a visitor. The W3C Privacy Working Group defines browser fingerprinting as the capability to identify or re-identify a visiting user, user agent or device through configuration settings or other observable characteristics. Some signals are available through JavaScript and CSS.
What information can make up a browser fingerprint?
Depending on the implementation, signals can include browser version, language, time zone, display characteristics, fonts, codecs and browser settings. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office also lists or discusses device configuration, network protocols, CSS, JavaScript objects, HTTP headers, clock information, TCP stack variation, plugins, APIs, and combinations with IP addresses or other identifiers. These are examples, not a checklist used by every site.

Individually, many traits are ordinary configuration details. Combined, they can make a browser or device more distinguishable. A fingerprint may be used to recognize the same environment on a later visit or to correlate activity across sites, depending on what is collected and how it is compared.

Yes, browser fingerprinting can support recognition without relying on a shared cookie. The W3C explains that different sites may be able to combine information about a user even when cookie policies prevent them from accessing one another’s cookies, because a fingerprint can be relatively distinctive and consistent across origins. That does not mean every site fingerprints visitors or that every fingerprint identifies a person by name; it can still link activity to the same browser or device.

How does digital-media fingerprinting work?
Media fingerprinting analyzes inherent features of a file—such as audio waveforms or video characteristics—and turns selected features into values that can be compared. The European Union Intellectual Property Office describes a typical system as including fingerprint generation, a database, detection and tracking. A system can compare a newly encountered item with stored fingerprints and, depending on its design, recognize similar or altered material rather than requiring a byte-for-byte identical copy.
That makes media fingerprints useful in content-recognition and rights workflows, as well as forensics and detection of known illicit or sensitive material. NIST also describes cryptographic and perceptual hashes being used with shared databases to identify known content. Organizations can exchange identifiers and associated information without exchanging the underlying content itself, though that arrangement does not eliminate every privacy risk.

What are digital fingerprints used for?
- Integrity checks: Compare a file’s digest with a known value to detect whether its data changed.
- Media recognition: Match audio, video, images or text against stored signatures, including some similar or altered versions.
- Security and fraud detection: Browser or device traits may help assess suspicious account creation or credential use. The ICO gives an example of using hardware, browser, location and IP information for that purpose.
- Tracking and re-identification: Browser fingerprints can link activity across sessions or origins, potentially without clear transparency or practical user controls.
The same broad idea—creating a representation for comparison—can support legitimate security or recognition tasks and also create privacy concerns. The consequences depend on the input, purpose, implementation, retention and control available to the person whose data is involved.

Does a VPN or clearing cookies stop browser fingerprinting?
Neither is a guarantee. Clearing cookies removes or resets cookie data but does not necessarily change the browser and device traits used to form a fingerprint. A VPN changes the network route and can affect the apparent IP address, but other observable characteristics may remain. The W3C says these measures do not necessarily prevent further correlation; it also considers complete elimination of fingerprinting by a determined adversary through widely deployed technical means implausible. Mitigations can reduce exposure to different degrees depending on the threat model.

In practice, reducing the number or distinctiveness of exposed signals may make recognition harder, but a change that reduces one signal does not necessarily remove all ways to correlate activity. The W3C’s guidance is aimed at mitigating fingerprinting in web specifications, not a promise that any single user setting defeats every fingerprinting method.
What does UK law say about fingerprinting?
For the UK specifically, the ICO says PECR regulation 6 applies when fingerprinting stores information on a device or accesses information stored on it. It says UK GDPR also applies where the processing involves personal data. These are summaries of UK regulator guidance, not legal advice, and they should not be assumed to state the law in other jurisdictions.
