The Digital Energy Council (DEC) is an advocacy organization focused on policy where energy infrastructure meets digital technologies, including digital-asset mining and high-performance computing data centers. The Crypto Council for Innovation announced on April 17, 2026, that it had acquired DEC and would operate it as a dedicated working group.
What the Digital Energy Council is
DEC describes itself as a member association focused exclusively on digital energy. Its About page characterizes it as a nonprofit advocacy group whose members work on energy modernization, grid resilience, and alternative energy channels for communities. It also says the organization promotes best practices for collecting and sharing industry data.

Its stated policy priorities are energy development, grid resilience, U.S. competitiveness, and national security. That makes DEC a policy and advocacy organization—not a utility, regulator, or energy supplier. DEC’s mission and About page provide its own descriptions.
What “digital energy” means in this context
DEC uses the term for the intersection of energy systems and digital applications. In a June 2024 submission to a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, it described its members’ work across the energy sector, digital-asset mining, and high-performance computing data centers, relating those activities to grid modernization and resilience. The House-hosted submission illustrates the organization’s policy scope.

In a Nuclear Energy Institute interview, DEC founder Tom Mapes offered a more informal explanation: “Digital energy is kind of the ability to to monetize these stranded energy assets. It’s converting energy into crypto or Bitcoin or similar. You know, there’s new AI integrations is coming in.” This is one founder’s simplified description, not a formal technical definition. The interview discusses the concept.
What DEC says it does
DEC organizes its work around four pillars: education, communication, integration, and coordination. In practical terms, those pillars describe an effort to inform policymakers, convey industry positions, bring energy and digital-energy participants together, and coordinate stakeholders around policy issues. They are the council’s stated functions, not a list of regulatory powers.
DEC’s current organizational status
On April 17, 2026, the Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) announced that it had acquired DEC and that DEC would operate under CCI as a dedicated working group. CCI said the group would continue focusing on energy development, grid resilience, U.S. competitiveness, and national security policy, and named Hunter Budd as interim executive director during integration. This describes the arrangement announced on that date; it does not establish that every operational integration step was completed. CCI’s announcement provides the dated status information.
How to read DEC’s electricity-use claims
In an April 9, 2025 congressional letter, DEC said digital technologies use approximately 2–3% of total U.S. electricity and attributed the figure to NERC’s 2024 Long-Term Reliability Assessment. The same letter cited a 151-gigawatt estimated demand increase in reference to that assessment. These are figures reported by DEC in its letter, not independently verified here against NERC’s underlying report; they should not be treated as a current measurement without checking the original assessment. Read DEC’s 2025 letter for its wording and attribution.
Rank #3
In short, DEC is a policy-focused association addressing how digital industries and energy infrastructure intersect. Since CCI’s April 2026 announcement, its stated organizational home is as a dedicated working group under CCI.
