If you buy or borrow digital comics, you usually get access under a service’s terms—not a portable copy you can move to another platform. Subscriptions end when membership ends, and offline app downloads may be temporary. GlobalComix makes a distinct claim for its DRM-free PDF downloads: it says buyers own the downloaded PDF permanently. Refund options also vary by service, purchase channel, and country.
What “owning” a digital comic means on these services
“Buy” does not have one uniform meaning across digital comics platforms. A service may provide a revocable or account-bound right to read, temporary offline access, or a downloadable file. These distinctions describe the services’ terms; they do not mean the buyer owns the comic’s copyright or can freely redistribute it.

Marvel’s subscriber agreement says, “Your subscription does not create any ownership interest in the Marvel Unlimited Service or any Content.” GlobalComix draws a different distinction between its reading licenses and PDF downloads, described below. In practice, check what happens to access after cancellation, whether a file can leave the app, and which account or storefront holds the item.
How access and downloads compare
| Service or format | Access model | After cancellation or removal | Offline access and portability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel Unlimited | Subscription library of selected digital comics; content may be updated. | Subscription access is not an ownership interest. The agreement does not promise continued access to subscription content after membership ends. | Marvel says subscribers may currently download unlimited comics per device for offline access, but describes downloads as temporary and may change or cease offline availability with reasonable efforts to give notice. Purchased or redeemed comics can be accessed on compatible devices in the Marvel Unlimited app through a Marvel account; this does not establish DRM-free export. |
| DC UNIVERSE INFINITE | Service access under a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, fully revocable license. | Terms say purchases are final unless applicable additional terms say otherwise; they do not establish a portable file. | Comixology purchases do not appear in a DC UNIVERSE INFINITE account. They remain accessible where purchased. |
| GlobalComix Collection Unlock | GlobalComix describes an individual release unlock as a license to read. | Availability can be limited by country licensing; titles may also be delayed or rotated in Gold. | Offline reading of Collection Unlocks requires GlobalComix Gold. This is not the same as a DRM-free PDF download. |
| GlobalComix PDF download | GlobalComix describes a downloadable PDF as DRM-free and says the buyer owns it permanently. | GlobalComix’s description concerns the PDF file, not copyright in the comic or unrestricted rights to redistribute it. | A PDF download is a file, unlike temporary offline access to an in-app licensed unlock. |
| Kindle Unlimited | Borrowed titles from a designated subscription catalog, which Amazon may change. | Borrowed titles are removed when membership ends; Amazon does not guarantee a particular title will remain available. | Kindle Unlimited reading works on Kindle devices and through Kindle apps on smartphones, computers, and tablets. This describes reading access, not ownership of borrowed comics. |
| VIZ digital products | Individually purchased digital products, subject to VIZ’s terms. | Purchases are generally final and nonrefundable, subject to the statutory exception described below. | The cited refund terms do not establish a DRM-free export or cross-platform transfer right. |
Policies and catalogs can change. For your specific title and location, check the service’s current terms and the checkout information before paying.

What happens to subscriptions and purchased comics
Marvel Unlimited
Marvel Unlimited is a subscription to a selected library, not a permanent purchase of everything read through the service. Its agreement allows the content offering to be updated and says the subscription creates no ownership interest in the content. Marvel separately says purchased or redeemed comics can be accessed across multiple compatible devices in the Marvel Unlimited app using a Marvel account. That is in-app account access, not evidence of a file that can be exported or moved to another publisher’s service.
DC UNIVERSE INFINITE and Comixology
DC’s terms describe service access as a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, fully revocable license. DC’s help center says Comixology and DC UNIVERSE INFINITE are separate services: a Comixology purchase will not appear in the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE account, although it remains accessible through the service where it was bought. Buying a DC comic in one storefront does not migrate it into the other library.

GlobalComix unlocks and PDFs
GlobalComix’s FAQ says, “Collection Unlocks grant a license to read, while PDF downloads are DRM-free and grant access to a downloadable PDF that you own permanently.” This is GlobalComix’s description of its product. A Collection Unlock is not the same thing as owning a PDF file, and neither statement transfers copyright in the comic. GlobalComix requires Gold membership to download Collection Unlocks for offline reading.

Kindle Unlimited
Kindle Unlimited is borrowing from a designated catalog, not buying each included comic. Amazon’s agreement, last updated November 19, 2024, says access is available while membership is active, titles can be added or removed, and selected titles are removed when membership ends. These subscription rules do not describe separately purchased Kindle comics.

Refund policies: check the service and purchase channel
| Service | Published policy | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel Unlimited | Subscription payments are nonrefundable, and no refund or credit is given for a partly used billing period. | Marvel reserves discretion to issue a refund or other consideration. The rule is about subscription payments. |
| DC UNIVERSE INFINITE | Purchases are final, with no refunds unless applicable additional terms specify otherwise. | Check any additional terms that apply to the purchase and your location. |
| GlobalComix | Website purchasers are directed to GlobalComix’s contact form; in-app purchasers are directed to Apple App Store or Google Play refund channels. | A request may be denied if the reader went beyond the free preview or has already received a refund before. |
| Kindle Unlimited | Membership fees are nonrefundable except where the terms expressly provide otherwise. | Cancellation stops future renewal; it does not refund fees already paid. |
| VIZ | Digital product purchases are final and nonrefundable in the general case. | Residents of the EU, UK, and other jurisdictions with a statutory cooling-off period may qualify for a refund within that period only if they have not logged in, accessed, downloaded, streamed, or begun consuming the content. |
Refund rules may also depend on local law and whether you paid through a platform such as Apple or Google. Use the refund route specified for the original purchase, and check the current checkout terms before assuming a refund is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Availability can change by title and country
A subscription catalog is not a fixed archive. Amazon says Kindle Unlimited’s designated titles may be added or removed, and it does not guarantee the continued availability of a specific title. GlobalComix says some Gold titles are delayed or rotated. It also says licensing can make a Collection Unlock unavailable in certain countries. A title’s presence in a catalog today does not guarantee continued access or availability in every territory.

Before paying: a practical checklist
- Identify whether the offer is a subscription, a one-title reading license, an in-app offline download, or a downloadable PDF.
- Look for language about access ending after cancellation, a title leaving the catalog, or a license being revocable.
- Confirm whether offline access is temporary and app-bound or whether the offer provides a DRM-free file.
- Check which account and storefront will hold the item. Do not assume libraries on separate services will combine.
- Read the refund terms for your country and payment channel, including any conditions triggered by opening or consuming the comic.
- Verify that the title is available in your country and whether its catalog listing can change.
