A digital camera’s record mode usually determines what kind of file it saves and, for still photos, the image-quality output. It may offer RAW, JPEG, HEIF, or a paired RAW-plus-JPEG/HEIF option. This is different from exposure modes such as aperture priority or manual: those control how the camera makes an image, not the file format it records.
What does record mode mean on a digital camera?
“Record mode” is not a standardized menu label across camera brands. The same general choice may appear as Image quality, Recording file format, or, for video, Movie mode. The setting governs the recorded file or its quality, rather than the exposure method.

For example, Nikon’s Z50II manual groups image area, quality, and size in its recording-options discussion, but treats them as separate controls. Fujifilm likewise lists still-photo image-quality settings separately from its movie-mode menu.
What are the still-photo recording options?
RAW
A RAW file contains camera-specific image data intended for later processing. You can adjust aspects such as white balance and exposure compensation during that workflow. Nikon calls converting RAW files to JPEG and other widely supported formats “RAW processing.” RAW is not a universal, untouched sensor dump; implementation and processing needs vary by camera.

JPEG
JPEG is a processed image file that is widely supported, making it a practical option when you want files that are ready to view, share, or use without a separate RAW-processing step.
HEIF
Some cameras offer HEIF as a processed still-image format. Sony describes its HEIF recording as capable of high image quality with small file sizes; Fujifilm notes its compression benefits but cautions that viewing and sharing options are more limited than for JPEG. Whether a HEIF file works smoothly depends on the devices and software in your workflow.

RAW plus JPEG or HEIF
Some cameras can save both a RAW file and a processed copy for each photo. That gives you a file for later editing as well as one that is easier to use immediately. The available pairing and restrictions depend on the camera; for example, Nikon’s Z50II documentation says the JPEG or HEIF copy can depend in part on the selected tone mode.
Should you shoot RAW or JPEG?
Choose based on how you plan to use the images, how much editing you expect to do, and which formats your devices and software support.

- Choose RAW if you expect to process photos later and want flexibility for adjustments such as white balance or exposure compensation.
- Choose JPEG if you want a processed file that is broadly compatible and convenient to view or share.
- Consider HEIF if your camera and intended viewing or editing workflow support it, and its compatibility trade-offs are acceptable.
- Choose a paired option if you want both a RAW file for processing and a ready-to-use copy, provided your camera offers that combination.
There is no universal file-size or image-quality ranking that applies to every camera and setting. Check the options documented for your model and test compatibility with the devices or software you actually use.
How is record mode different from image size, aspect ratio, and exposure mode?
- Exposure or shooting mode—such as aperture priority, shutter priority, or manual—governs how the photograph is made.
- Record format or image quality—such as RAW, JPEG, or HEIF—governs the still-image file the camera records.
- Image size and aspect ratiocontrol dimensions or proportions; they are related settings, not synonyms for file format.
- Movie settingscontrol video recording. Their formats and quality options are model-specific, so still-photo RAW/JPEG/HEIF choices do not describe a universal set of video modes.
Where can you find the setting?
Look in your camera’s image-quality, recording-format, or still-image settings for photo options; video choices may be under a movie-mode menu. Exact labels, available formats, and menu paths vary by model, so consult the current official manual for your camera rather than relying on a generic button sequence. For examples, see Nikon’s Z50II online manual, Fujifilm’s X100VI image-quality settings, and Sony’s HEIF recording guidance.
