A digital camera gathers light through its lens, controls that light with the aperture and shutter, converts it into digital data at the image sensor, and processes and saves the resulting image. Its screen or viewfinder helps you compose the shot; the body, controls, and battery support the process. The exact layout and features vary by model.
How a digital camera turns a scene into a file
- The lens gathers and focuses light. It directs light from the scene toward the image sensor. Interchangeable-lens cameras let you swap lenses; fixed-lens cameras do not.
- The aperture and shutter regulate exposure. The aperture is an opening associated with the lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor. The shutter controls how long light is recorded. Together, they affect exposure, though aperture also influences depth of field.
- The image sensor converts light into a signal. Canon explains that light reaches the image sensor, which converts it into a digital signal (Canon Global’s mirrorless camera explainer).
- The image processor makes image data. The processor converts the sensor’s digital signal into image data, which the camera can save.
- Storage holds the image file. The camera writes image data to storage media, often a memory card. Card type and compatibility depend on the camera.
Parts you use to compose and operate the camera
Viewfinder or LCD monitor
A viewfinder or rear screen lets you compose a shot and review images. An optical viewfinder shows the scene optically; an electronic viewfinder displays an electronic image. Some cameras offer both, while others rely on a rear display and have no separate viewfinder. Fujifilm’s X100V, for example, supports optical and electronic viewfinder use and has an LCD touchscreen (Fujifilm X100V manual).

Shutter button and camera controls
The shutter button is the control you press to initiate capture; it is not the shutter mechanism that determines the exposure interval. Buttons and dials can also control focus, exposure settings, menus, and playback. Their placement and operation vary across models.

Camera body
The body houses and connects the camera’s components. Depending on the model, it may also have a built-in flash, microphone, speaker, hot shoe, ports, or tripod mount. These are possible features, not parts found on every camera. Fujifilm’s camera manuals illustrate how the external parts differ between models: X100V parts and X-E5 parts.
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting

Battery
The battery supplies power to the camera’s electronic systems. Battery type and other battery details depend on the model.
Which camera parts differ between DSLR and mirrorless?
The key architectural difference is the reflex mirror. In an SLR design, a mirror directs light toward a prism and optical viewfinder. A mirrorless camera has no reflex mirror; its sensor and image processor produce the image shown in an electronic viewfinder. Both designs use a lens, image sensor, and image-processing technology. Canon describes this distinction in its mirrorless camera explainer.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
These are two related but separate questions: whether a camera has a reflex mirror, and whether it has an optical or electronic viewfinder. A DSLR commonly pairs a mirror with an optical viewfinder, while a mirrorless camera uses an electronic viewfinder when one is provided. A camera may have no separate viewfinder and use its rear display instead. Other physical controls and features depend on the model.
