That advantage does not automatically make diesel cheaper to operate. The result depends on the specific vehicles, their combined city/highway ratings or observed MPG, fuel prices where you drive, annual mileage, and the work the vehicle must do.
This guide is for U.S. consumers. EPA and Energy Information Administration (EIA) figures use U.S. vehicle, fuel, and pricing assumptions. Use the method below to compare a real gasoline and diesel vehicle without mistaking a higher MPG number for a guaranteed lower fuel bill.

Is diesel more fuel efficient than gasoline?
Usually, yes, when you compare vehicles designed for similar purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that vehicles relying on diesel fuel often achieve higher fuel economy than gasoline vehicles, largely because diesel’s energy density is about 15% higher. A gallon of diesel therefore contains more usable chemical energy than a gallon of gasoline.
That is a general tendency, not a model-by-model rule. Engine design, vehicle weight, aerodynamics, gearing, tires, drivetrain losses, emissions equipment, payload, weather, traffic, and driving style can outweigh the fuel’s energy-density advantage. A particular gasoline vehicle can beat a particular diesel vehicle in MPG, especially when the vehicles are different sizes or intended for different jobs.

Diesel and gasoline engines also use different technologies. The fuel’s higher energy content is only one part of the result; the engine, transmission, calibration, and emissions-control system determine how efficiently a vehicle turns that energy into motion.
Why higher MPG does not always mean lower fuel cost
Fuel economy measures distance per gallon. Your fuel bill depends on both distance per gallon and the price of each gallon. Diesel can deliver more miles per gallon while still costing more per mile if diesel fuel is sufficiently more expensive than gasoline.
For a fuel-only comparison, use this formula:
Cost per 100 miles = (fuel price per gallon ÷ MPG) × 100

For annual fuel expense, multiply the gallons needed by your annual miles:
Annual fuel cost = (annual miles ÷ MPG) × fuel price per gallon
These calculations exclude purchase price, financing, insurance, maintenance, repairs, registration, depreciation, and resale value. They answer only the fuel question.

EPA’s standardized price example and the MPG break-even point
EPA’s model-year 2027 fuel-economy label assumptions use $3.10 per gallon for regular gasoline and $3.45 per gallon for diesel. Those are standardized inputs for label calculations, not a current retail-price quote for your state or town. The labels also assume 15,000 miles per year and use adjusted combined MPG.
At those assumed prices, diesel must achieve about 11.3% higher MPG than gasoline to match fuel-only cost per mile. The arithmetic is $3.45 ÷ $3.10 = approximately 1.113. If the diesel’s MPG advantage is smaller than that, its fuel cost per mile is higher under the label assumptions; if the advantage is larger, its fuel cost per mile is lower.
| Comparison | Gasoline example | Diesel example | Fuel-only result using EPA MY2027 assumptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPG | 30 MPG | 32 MPG | Diesel uses fewer gallons, but not enough to offset its higher assumed price |
| Cost per 100 miles | $3.10 ÷ 30 × 100 = $10.33 | $3.45 ÷ 32 × 100 = $10.78 | Gasoline is lower by about $0.45 per 100 miles |
| MPG | 30 MPG | 34 MPG | Diesel’s larger MPG advantage offsets the price difference |
| Cost per 100 miles | $10.33 | $3.45 ÷ 34 × 100 = $10.15 | Diesel is lower by about $0.18 per 100 miles |
| 15,000-mile annual fuel cost | $1,550 at 30 MPG | $1,522 at 34 MPG | Diesel saves about $28 in this illustrative fuel-only calculation |
The examples are arithmetic illustrations, not ratings for a named vehicle. Replace the MPG and prices with the figures for the two vehicles you are actually considering.
How to compare a gasoline and diesel vehicle correctly
- Match the vehicles’ jobs. Compare similar body styles, weight classes, drivetrain layouts, seating capacity, payload expectations, and towing or equipment requirements. Comparing a compact gasoline car with a heavy-duty diesel pickup produces a useful application discussion but not a meaningful efficiency test.
- Record the official combined MPG. Use the EPA label’s combined city/highway value for each vehicle when both are certified under comparable conditions. The label also provides estimated annual fuel costs and a consumption-rate perspective. Treat these as standardized estimates; EPA warns that actual mileage varies.
- Use local fuel prices. Check the prices you can realistically pay in your region and along your normal routes. Keep gasoline and diesel prices from the same date and geography.
- Calculate cost per 100 miles. Apply the formula above to each vehicle. Cost per 100 miles makes a small difference easier to see than MPG alone.
- Scale the result to your mileage. Use your expected annual miles, not automatically the label’s 15,000-mile assumption. Separate commuting, highway travel, short trips, hauling, and idling if they have very different consumption.
- Check the intended task. A vehicle that is cheaper per mile on paper may not meet your passenger, towing, freight, construction, farming, or equipment needs. Eliminate vehicles that cannot perform the required job before comparing fuel savings.
- Then examine ownership costs. For specific models, obtain documented purchase prices, service schedules, repair estimates, insurance quotes, taxes, financing terms, and expected resale values. The fuel calculation cannot establish a total-cost-of-ownership winner by itself.
Official ratings, observed MPG, and why your result can differ
EPA label values are controlled comparison estimates, not promises. They use stated test procedures, standardized fuel-price assumptions, 15,000 miles per year, and adjusted combined MPG. Real results change with speed, temperature, terrain, traffic, tire pressure, cargo, roof loads, towing, maintenance, and driving behavior.
For a vehicle you already own, observed MPG is more useful than a brochure number for budgeting. Record every fill-up, including gallons purchased and odometer miles. After several tanks, divide miles driven by gallons added. Keep gasoline and diesel records separate, and note unusual events such as towing or a long trip. Use a multi-tank average rather than a single fill-up, because the first or last tank may not be filled to exactly the same level.

Where diesel is commonly used
Diesel remains common where vehicles must operate for long periods, carry heavy loads, or power specialized equipment. EIA describes diesel engines as common in freight trucks and trains, buses, farming and construction equipment, military vehicles, and other demanding applications. Gasoline is common in cars and light trucks. These are broad U.S. application patterns, not a rule that every buyer should choose one fuel.
EIA reports preliminary 2025 U.S. transportation-sector diesel consumption of about 2.94 million barrels per day, or roughly 123 million gallons per day. That statistic covers the transportation sector and reflects the scale of diesel use; it does not indicate what any individual passenger vehicle will cost to operate.
For a buyer, the practical implication is availability of vehicle configurations. Diesel choices are concentrated in commercial, vocational, and heavy-duty segments, while gasoline choices are widespread among passenger cars and light trucks. Compare vehicles that are actually offered for the task and region you need rather than assuming a fuel type is universally available.
When a diesel vehicle may be worth considering
High annual mileage
A higher-MPG diesel has more opportunity to recover a fuel-price premium when you drive many miles. Calculate the annual difference with your own prices and mileage, then compare that difference with any model-specific purchase and ownership costs. A small per-100-mile saving may be meaningful for a high-mileage commercial user and insignificant for an occasional driver.
Long, consistent routes
If most of your driving is steady highway or route work, your observed MPG may be closer to the vehicle’s combined rating than it would be for short, congested trips. Still, use measured or well-supported model-specific data; do not assume every diesel receives the same advantage.
Heavy-duty or vocational work
When the required vehicle is a freight truck, bus, farm machine, construction vehicle, or other diesel-oriented platform, fuel type is part of the equipment choice rather than a simple economy preference. Confirm payload, towing, operating-hours, refueling, and service requirements for the exact configuration.

Reliable access to diesel fuel
A theoretical fuel saving is not useful if diesel is difficult to obtain on your routes or carries a much larger local price premium. Include the locations and hours of the stations you actually use in your decision.

When gasoline may be the better fit
The diesel MPG advantage is small
Under EPA’s MY2027 assumptions, diesel needs roughly 11.3% more MPG just to break even on fuel cost. If the matched vehicles do not clear that threshold at your local prices, gasoline can have the lower fuel cost even though the diesel posts a higher MPG number.
Light-duty passenger use
Gasoline is a common fuel for cars and light trucks, so it may provide more choices for a driver who does not need a diesel-oriented work configuration. Choose based on the exact vehicles’ ratings, price, service requirements, and suitability rather than on the category label alone.
Low annual mileage
When you drive relatively few miles, the annual fuel difference may be too small to justify paying more for a particular vehicle or accepting different service requirements. Calculate the dollar difference instead of assuming that a small MPG advantage will repay a premium.
Local diesel costs are high
Fuel prices vary by location and time. Re-run the calculation whenever the price gap changes materially. A diesel that wins at one station’s prices can lose at another’s.
Ownership costs the fuel comparison cannot answer
The available national figures do not establish a purchase-price, maintenance, repair, insurance, or resale advantage for unspecified gasoline and diesel models. Those costs vary by engine, transmission, emissions system, trim, region, labor rates, warranty coverage, and vehicle age.

For a serious purchase decision, request the exact figures for both configurations:
- Transaction price, financing rate, taxes, registration, and equipment required for your job.
- Scheduled service intervals and the price of routine parts and fluids.
- Warranty terms and exclusions, including emissions-related components.
- Typical repair exposure and parts availability in your area.
- Insurance premiums and any commercial-use requirements.
- Expected resale value for the same mileage, condition, and market.
Add these items to the fuel calculation only when they are documented for the models and ownership period you are evaluating. Do not treat a generic diesel-versus-gasoline percentage as a substitute for model-specific numbers.
Emissions and the limits of a fuel-only verdict
EPA notes that diesel contains more carbon per gallon than gasoline and requires different engine technology. A gallon-based comparison therefore cannot establish which vehicle has lower emissions per mile. Per-mile results depend on fuel consumption, emissions controls, certification, operating conditions, and the exact vehicle.

How common are diesel passenger vehicles?
EPA’s 2025 EPA Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026 and based on light-duty trends through model year 2024, reports that diesel vehicles were below 1% of U.S. new-vehicle production in model year 2024 within its light-duty production scope. That scope excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, work vans, and vocational trucks, so the statistic should not be read as a measure of all diesel-powered vehicles.
The figure helps explain why diesel is a specialized choice in the U.S. light-duty market even though diesel remains important in commercial transportation and equipment. Availability, not just fuel chemistry, should be part of your comparison.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing MPG without prices. Convert both vehicles to cost per 100 miles using the same date and location for fuel prices.
- Using different vehicle classes. A diesel work truck and a gasoline compact car answer different transportation needs.
- Calling EPA label prices current. The $3.10 gasoline and $3.45 diesel figures are MY2027 calculation inputs, not live local averages.
- Assuming the label is a guarantee. Actual mileage varies with conditions, load, maintenance, and driving.
- Ignoring annual mileage. Convert a per-mile difference into your expected yearly miles before judging its importance.
- Declaring a total-cost winner from fuel alone. Include model-specific purchase, service, repair, insurance, and resale information.
- Overgeneralizing from a fleet statistic. National diesel consumption and production shares describe broad markets, not your personal operating cost.

Diesel often gets better MPG because each gallon contains more energy, but fuel economy and fuel expense are separate questions. Compare matched vehicles with combined or observed MPG, your local gasoline and diesel prices, cost per 100 miles, annual mileage, and the vehicle’s ability to perform the intended job. Use EPA’s label as a consistent starting point, then replace its standardized assumptions with your own prices and driving data. Only after that fuel comparison should you add the exact purchase, maintenance, repair, insurance, and resale figures for the vehicles you are considering.
