No. The railway to Starcross, where the train was reportedly held, did not open until 1846. An 1871 account appears to have given the wrong year: the evidence points instead to a possible incident on 18 October 1848. That date is a strong reconstruction, not a proven correction, because the account’s original source has not been found.
What the 1871 account says happened
An anonymous item published in Nature in 1871 described an Exeter express due to leave at 10:05 p.m. on 18 October 1841. It said magnetic disturbance made it “impossible to ascertain if the line was clear at Starcross,” delaying the train by 16 minutes. The account attributed the problem to telegraph signalling; it did not say that an aurora physically affected the train. The 2026 study’s discussion of the 1871 account notes that it gives no traceable citation for its underlying source.

Why 1841 cannot be right
The Exeter–Starcross railway did not exist in 1841. Parliament authorized the Exeter–Plymouth railway in 1844, and the Exeter-to-Teignmouth section, which included Starcross, opened on 30 May 1846. The line reached Newton Abbot by December that year. A train could not have been held on this route in October 1841. Wild et al. (2026) set out the railway chronology.

The date also lacks independent signs of a major space-weather event: the researchers found no unusual magnetic activity in Greenwich’s yearbook for 18 October 1841 and no English aurora sighting for that date in the catalogue they checked.

Why researchers point to 18 October 1848
Several separate clues fit 1848. First, timetables from 11 March 1848 through 26 July 1849 show a 10:05 p.m. Exeter departure toward Starcross—the same time and route described in the 1871 account. Second, Greenwich magnetic records show strong disturbance on 18 October 1848. The study estimates an approximately 310 nT change in the horizontal magnetic field over a recorded interval, alongside a large swing in magnetic declination. These are Greenwich observations, not measurements taken in Exeter.
Contemporary observations add context. A newspaper reported prominent sunspots on 19 October 1848, and astronomer Temple Chevallier recorded a large sunspot group that day. Newspapers also described aurorae across Britain during the period, including a display near Leeds on the night likely to have been 18 October. Together, these records support active space weather around the proposed date, but they do not independently verify that the train was delayed.

How a magnetic disturbance could affect railway signalling
The reported vulnerability was in the telegraph system, not the locomotive. Victorian signalers used needle telegraph apparatus to communicate between separated points and establish whether a section of track was clear or occupied. If magnetic disturbance interfered with those signals, staff could have been unable to confirm that the line to Starcross was safe to use. A delay while they resolved that uncertainty is plausible; the available evidence does not demonstrate exactly what happened in the reported incident.

Was this the first space-weather disruption to technology?
No. Wild and colleagues identify a Midland Railway telegraph disturbance during the aurora of 19 March 1847 as the earliest credible report they found of space weather affecting technology. That incident predates the likely 1848 Exeter case. The later, better-known Carrington event occurred in 1859, but the evidence here does not support ranking the railway events by storm intensity.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The most defensible reading is that the 1871 account misdated a possible Exeter train delay, and that 18 October 1848 fits the railway timetable, magnetic records and contemporary reports far better than 1841. But those strands establish the conditions for a plausible event, not the delay itself. The original manuscript or other source behind the 1871 anecdote has not been located, so the 1848 date remains a compelling reconstruction rather than a directly documented fact.
