Project Zomboid saw a major launch-period resurgence in public player activity after Build 42 reached Stable, and it ranked highly on Steam’s weekly revenue charts. But there is no public sales total in the available evidence to confirm that copies sold “exploded” or to prove Build 42 caused a specific increase in sales.
What happened with Build 42
The Indie Stone released Project Zomboid Build 42.20 to the public Stable branch on July 29, 2026. The update substantially reworked Knox Country and added deeper crafting and building, animals and animal husbandry, improved lighting and atmosphere, expanded lore, and quality-of-life changes. The developer’s release announcement describes the Stable release and its major features.

The latest Stable update covered by the developer’s news page is Build 42.21, announced September 28 after an Unstable testing period. Its notes describe fixes for issues including zombie duplication in multiplayer and zombies disappearing when players re-entered a world chunk, along with an adjustment to tree cutaway behavior. The Build 42.21 announcement also explains the developer’s Unstable-to-Stable release process.
The substantial update plausibly renewed interest, but public activity and sales rankings cannot establish that a particular feature caused purchases.

What the public numbers show—and what they do not
SteamCharts’ monthly figures show that player activity was especially high in August, the first full month after Build 42.20 reached Stable. Its reported monthly average was 76,861.26 concurrent players in August 2026, then 54,454.20 in September, a 29.15% decrease. The tracker lists monthly peaks of 124,506 in August and 100,244 in September. These are measures of people playing at the same time, not copies purchased. SteamCharts’ Project Zomboid statistics provide the dated figures.
A separate SteamCharts snapshot on October 9 listed 50,125 average concurrent players over the preceding 30 days. That is a rolling player-activity measure, not a sales tally. The tracker’s current statistics page is the source for that snapshot.

Project Zomboid placed #20 for August 4–11 and #5 for August 25–September 1, evidence of strong visibility on Steam’s revenue-ranked charts during those sampled weeks. The rankings do not disclose the game’s revenue amount or number of copies sold. SteamDB’s weekly global top-seller charts show the rankings.
| Indicator | Reported result | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| SteamCharts monthly average concurrency | 76,861.26 in August 2026; 54,454.20 in September 2026 | Average simultaneous players, not purchases |

Why “sales exploded” goes beyond the evidence
Concurrent-player counts reveal engagement, not transactions: they can rise when existing owners return, and they do not say how many people bought the game. A revenue-ranked chart offers a more commercial signal, but a position alone does not show the underlying revenue, units, or change against a prior period. Neither measure proves that Build 42 caused any purchases.
No official post-update unit-sales or revenue disclosure is available in the cited sources. The most defensible conclusion is therefore that Build 42 coincided with a pronounced resurgence in player activity and strong Steam seller-chart visibility—not that a quantified sales explosion has been confirmed.

Timing and practical update context
The timing matters: Build 42.20 arrived at the end of July, August was the first full month following the release, and September’s average concurrent-player count was lower than August’s. The figures support a launch-period surge, but not a claim that sales exploded in September or in some other unspecified “last month.”
The developer said the game’s price would rise alongside Build 42 Stable. That is relevant context for commercial performance, but the cited public figures do not show how the change affected revenue or sales. Price can vary by storefront, country, and date, so a universal current price cannot be inferred from that announcement. The Indie Stone’s price announcement gives its stated timing.
For players choosing a version, the developer says Build 41 remains available through the legacy41 beta channel. It also warns that saves from Build 42.19 Unstable are not compatible with 42.20. Check the official release notes before switching a save or updating a server. The Build 42.20 release notes contain those compatibility details.
