As of 10:24 a.m. PT on October 7, 2026, Microsoft had not confirmed a Windows 12 announcement at its Windows and Surface event. Microsoft’s event page said more details and updates would be posted at 11 a.m. PT, so the event’s final announcements were still pending at that time.

What Microsoft had confirmed by 10:24 a.m. PT

Microsoft’s official event page, titled “Windows and Surface October 2026 news,” invited viewers to watch live and said: “Stay tuned here for more details, photos and other updates at 11 a.m. PT.” The page included links to Surface products, Copilot and Windows 11 apps, but its available content did not announce Windows 12 or give a release date.

That makes the answer time-dependent: the information available by 10:24 a.m. PT did not confirm Windows 12, and Microsoft had said further event updates would follow at 11 a.m. PT. The event page is the place to check for what Microsoft announced after that cutoff.

What Microsoft had said about Windows 12 before the event

On March 3, 2025, Microsoft-identified representative Joe Lurie replied to a Windows 12 question in a Microsoft Tech Community discussion: “Microsoft has never announced any plans to release a Windows 12. I’m not saying that we will never, ever release a new version of Windows, but today we have no plans.” That was Microsoft’s position at the time of the reply; it was not a statement made at the October 2026 event and does not establish what Microsoft might announce later.

A Microsoft Q&A volunteer moderator also wrote on July 31, 2026, that Microsoft had not mentioned Windows 12 and was focused on improving Windows 11. That is a community moderator’s answer, not a formal Microsoft roadmap announcement.

Why event previews and rumors do not settle the question

Windows Central’s October 6 preview described the upcoming event as covering Windows, Surface and NVIDIA, quoting Microsoft’s stream description about “what’s next from Windows, Surface, and NVIDIA.” It expected attention on products such as Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark. Those were preview expectations, not confirmation of a Windows 12 announcement.

Windows Central also reported that an earlier claim that an AI-focused Windows 12 was likely to launch in 2026 was false, and noted that PCWorld had retracted its article. Such reporting is a reason not to treat speculative release dates or feature lists as confirmed. A release date or product plan should be attributed to Microsoft itself before being presented as fact.

What to do if you are deciding whether to wait

  • If you need to choose an operating system now: assess Windows 11 using current official information. The sources available at the event cutoff do not establish a Windows 12 product to install or buy.
  • If your decision depends on Windows 12: wait for an explicit Microsoft announcement, including a confirmed product name and release timing. The event information available by 10:24 a.m. PT did not provide either.
  • If you saw a specific launch date or feature list: check whether Microsoft announced it directly. Event previews and the earlier disputed AI-focused Windows 12 report are not proof of a release plan.
