There is no evidence in Xfinity’s official incident notice that Comcast leaked customers’ private home Wi‑Fi passwords. The notice describes unauthorized access to Xfinity systems from October 16–19, 2023, linked to a Citrix vulnerability. It says Xfinity usernames and hashed account passwords were involved, with additional personal details for some customers. An Xfinity account password and a home Wi‑Fi password are different credentials.
What the Xfinity incident confirmed
Xfinity’s Notice to Customers of Data Security Incident says an unauthorized party accessed internal systems between October 16 and 19, 2023. Xfinity attributed the access to a Citrix vulnerability, said it patched and mitigated the affected systems, and later determined that information was likely acquired.
The notice identifies usernames and hashed passwords among the information involved. For some customers, it also lists names, contact information, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and/or secret questions and answers. It does not say that every customer’s record contained every field, and it does not identify a total number of affected customers in the notice.
Nothing in that notice says that the wireless key used by devices in customers’ homes was exposed. Calling the event a leak of “your Xfinity Wi‑Fi password” conflates two separate credentials.

Which password are you worried about?
| Credential | What it protects | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Xfinity ID password | Sign-in to Xfinity services, billing and account settings | Reset it through Xfinity, turn on multi-factor authentication, review account and recovery settings, and change any reused password elsewhere. |
| Home Wi‑Fi password | Allows devices to join your household wireless network | View or change it in the controls for your Xfinity Gateway, then reconnect affected devices. |
A compromised Xfinity ID password can let someone access account information or make service changes. It does not automatically reveal the separate Wi‑Fi key configured on your gateway.
What to do if your Xfinity account may be affected
- Reset the Xfinity ID password directly. Use Xfinity’s own account-recovery or password-reset flow by navigating to Xfinity yourself. Xfinity says a potentially compromised ID may be disabled until its password is reset.
- Enable stronger sign-in protection. Xfinity’s notice states: “We strongly encourage you to enroll in two-factor or multi-factor authentication.” Use the available MFA option after resetting the password.
- Check for account changes. Look for unfamiliar users, recent account-change notices, unauthorized charges or service changes, and recovery email addresses or phone numbers you did not add. Update voice and voicemail PINs as well.
- Change reused credentials. If the same password or security information was used on another service, replace it there with a unique password. A hash in a breach does not make password reuse safe.
- Treat unsolicited reset requests as suspicious. Xfinity’s incident FAQ warns that an unexpected phone call, email or text asking you to update a password could be phishing. Do not use its embedded link; open Xfinity through a known address or official app instead.
How to change an Xfinity home Wi‑Fi password
For a rented Xfinity Gateway, Xfinity’s current support path is:
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Open the Xfinity app.
- Select the WiFi tab.
- Choose WiFi details.
- Select Edit WiFi settings and save the new network name or password.
- Reconnect phones, computers, televisions, cameras and smart-home devices with the new credentials.
The available controls depend on your gateway model and settings. Xfinity identifies continued Admin Tool management for some XB2 and XB3 configurations, while WiFi Boost Pods and WiFi Intelligence setups can be app-only. Follow the interface shown for your equipment rather than assuming that one universal 10.0.0.1 procedure applies.
If you own the router instead of renting an Xfinity Gateway, use the manufacturer’s current instructions. Changing the Wi‑Fi key is a local network action; it does not reset your Xfinity ID password.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Basic protection for any home network
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s home-network guidance (August 2022) recommends these baseline controls:
- Replace default router-administrator credentials and use a unique network name and password.
- Turn on the strongest encryption option your router supports.
- Install router and device updates promptly.
- Use unique passwords and two-factor authentication wherever offered.
- Disable remote administration if you do not need it.
These steps reduce the chance that an attacker who obtains an account credential, guesses a default setting or exploits an unpatched device can reach your network.

When to monitor for identity theft
If your individual Xfinity notice says that additional identifying information was involved, review bank and card statements and your credit reports for activity you do not recognize. Xfinity points customers to identity-theft resources and credit-report monitoring guidance. Paid identity-monitoring services are optional; evaluate their monitoring scope, alerts, recovery assistance, price, cancellation terms and eligibility before enrolling.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
- The documented event is historical: October 2023, not proof of a new 2026 leak.
- The official notice describes Xfinity usernames and hashed passwords, not private household Wi‑Fi keys.
- Additional personal fields applied to some customers, not necessarily everyone.
- No exposed-customer total is established by the notice reviewed here.
- Resetting an Xfinity ID password and changing a gateway’s Wi‑Fi password are separate actions.
