Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 14, 2026 that some links in ChatGPT answers no longer carried utm_source=chatgpt.com and appeared to open without an HTTP referrer. In analytics, those visits can be classified as direct traffic even when users arrived from ChatGPT. The reported behavior followed GPT-6’s October rollout, but OpenAI has not said whether the behavior is intentional, permanent, or a bug.
What changed in ChatGPT link tracking?
Search Engine Roundtable reported a change in the information attached to some ChatGPT result links. Previously, a link could include a UTM query parameter identifying ChatGPT as the source. The reported behavior removes that tag and may also suppress the browser’s referrer header.

That distinction matters: losing attribution data does not prove that ChatGPT stopped sending clicks. It means analytics software may no longer have the evidence needed to place those clicks in a ChatGPT referral channel.
UTM parameters
A UTM parameter is text appended to a URL, such as >. Analytics platforms read it to label campaign or referral traffic. If the parameter is absent, the visit can be assigned to another channel or remain unattributed.

HTTP referrer information
Browsers can also send the page a referrer showing where navigation began. The reported implementation opened links in a new window with a noopener, noreferrer option. When no referrer is sent and no UTM tag is present, many analytics systems record the session as direct traffic.
What the reported evidence shows
Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 14, 2026 that the behavior appeared to begin around the GPT-6 release, roughly one week after rollout. Adobe’s Cedric Huesler said he compared approximately 500 pages that received at least 5% of their visits from ChatGPT.
Rank #2
In Huesler’s reported sample, ChatGPT traffic fell by 31,000 visits per day, direct traffic increased by 26,000 visits per day on the same pages, and search traffic declined 7%. Direct traffic rose on two of every three pages that lost reported ChatGPT traffic. These are observations from that sample, not an independently verified industry-wide measurement.
SEO Daily described the same attribution problem but noted conflicting tests. Glenn Gabe still saw UTM parameters in a ChatGPT “More” section, while they were absent from the main sources he checked. That inconsistency leaves open the possibility of a bug, staged rollout, interface-specific behavior, or another implementation difference.
How GPT-6 timing fits the story
OpenAI announced GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, with a global ChatGPT rollout to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Free and Go expansion began the following day. Paid tiers use GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI said models powering Work and Codex were not changing in that release; its safety update said GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna replaced GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna in ChatGPT, while earlier versions remained in Codex and ChatGPT Work.
The timing is therefore suggestive, not conclusive. OpenAI has not publicly confirmed that GPT-6 intentionally removed UTM parameters or referrers. OpenAI also says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week, so even a reporting-only change can affect large publishers’ channel totals.
Why ChatGPT visits can appear as direct traffic
| What happens to the click | What the publisher may see | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| UTM tag remains and a referrer is sent | ChatGPT referral or campaign traffic | Nothing unusual is indicated |
| UTM tag is removed but referrer remains | Referral classification may vary by analytics platform | That ChatGPT stopped sending users |
| UTM tag and referrer are both absent | Direct, unattributed, or “none” traffic | A real audience decline |
| Behavior differs by interface section | Mixed attribution across the same ChatGPT property | A permanent platform-wide policy |
Direct traffic is a measurement category, not a declaration that a person typed the URL. Bookmarks, copied links, privacy settings, mobile-app handoffs, and missing tracking data can all contribute to it.
How to check whether your traffic actually dropped
- Choose identical comparison periods. Compare dates before and after the observed change, using the same time zone, reporting filters, and property.
- Separate channels. Export ChatGPT referral traffic, direct or “none” traffic, organic search, landing pages, and sessions or users for both periods.
- Look for substitution. A ChatGPT decline paired with a similar direct increase on the same landing pages suggests reclassification rather than lost demand.
- Check page-level patterns. Review pages that historically received meaningful ChatGPT traffic instead of relying only on a site-wide total.
- Segment by link location. Compare main answer links with links opened through the More section, because observers have reported different behavior between them.
- Record platform and date. Note whether visits came from desktop web, mobile web, or an app, and preserve the exact reporting window so a later change can be identified.
- Use server logs as a second view. Logs can confirm request volume and landing URLs, but they cannot recover a referrer or UTM value that was never transmitted.
Is this a bug or an intentional change?
There is no confirmed answer. The strongest public evidence is observational: one large sample reported a shift toward direct traffic, while other testing found UTM tags in at least one section of ChatGPT. Until OpenAI documents the behavior or it becomes consistent across interfaces and accounts, publishers should treat it as an attribution reliability issue rather than a settled product policy.
What publishers should do now
- Do not interpret a lower ChatGPT referral line by itself as a lower ChatGPT audience.
- Monitor direct traffic and ChatGPT referrals together, using the same landing-page and date breakdown.
- Annotate analytics dashboards with the October 2026 GPT-6 rollout and any observed tracking change.
- Keep a separate view of referral, direct, organic search, and unattributed traffic so channel movement is visible.
- Avoid manually relabeling all direct traffic as ChatGPT without corroborating evidence; direct traffic has many other causes.
- Recheck the behavior periodically because the reports describe an unconfirmed, potentially temporary implementation.
The Bottom Line
The reported GPT-6-era change may be hiding ChatGPT clicks inside direct traffic by removing UTM parameters and referrer data. It has not been confirmed as intentional or permanent, and mixed tests show that attribution can vary by link section. Compare ChatGPT, direct, search, and page-level traffic over matching dates before concluding that visits disappeared.
