Nikon’s 2026 Small World in Motion winner used an unsupervised neural-network method to process and visualize grayscale microscope data. Researchers questioned whether some colored structures in the resulting video were biologically plausible. That raises real questions about how the imagery should be interpreted, but it does not establish that the original cilia footage was fabricated—or settle whether the entry broke Nikon’s rules. Nikon was re-reviewing the submission in the latest report available here, with no outcome reported.
What happened with the winning microscope video?
Nikon announced Ning Xu as the winner of its 2026 Small World in Motion competition on September 16. The entry depicts abnormal movement of airway cilia in a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia, a condition affecting the tiny hair-like structures that help clear the airways. Nikon’s announcement described the subject of the video; the later dispute concerns how its imagery was processed and rendered.

On September 22, Nikon added information disclosing an AI method in the post-processing workflow, according to Nature’s September 30 report. Nikon’s description, quoted by Gizmodo, said: “An unsupervised neural-network method was subsequently used as part of the post-processing and visualization workflow to distinguish and visualize features in the grayscale data, creating a more vivid and visually engaging video.”

Did AI make the video?
“AI made the video” is too broad to describe what Nikon disclosed. The account attributed to Xu is that the original video captured the cilia and their movement, while AI was applied to reconstructed grayscale data to distinguish and color structures with similar morphology. Xu said the rendering was not intended to claim what those features were anatomically. That is Xu’s explanation as reported by Gizmodo; the available reporting does not independently validate the processing pipeline.
The important distinction is between the original captured measurement and the later visualization. The motion in the source footage, the processing applied to grayscale data, and the meaning viewers might assign to colored structures are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. The disclosure establishes that computational processing was part of the workflow; it does not by itself establish whether the rendering introduced features, altered their appearance, or accurately represented an underlying measurement.

Why did scientists call some structures implausible?
The criticism reported by Nature and Gizmodo focused on colored structures beneath the cilia. University of Florida bioengineering researcher Edward Phelps said the purple structures resemble mitochondria, but argued that the apparent arrangement “does not occur in biology.” He also questioned the blue nodules and said he did not know what the red structures represented. These are attributed concerns about the imagery, not a final identification of each colored feature.
Developmental biologist Melanie White of the University of Queensland framed the broader issue: scientists “need to be able to trust that what we are seeing is grounded in the underlying measurement.” In a scientific image, color and visual clarity can help reveal patterns, but viewers need to know whether those visual elements are measured directly, computationally derived, or merely illustrative. The reporting available here does not establish a definitive biological interpretation of the disputed structures.

Does the video violate Nikon’s AI rule?
Nikon’s official Small World in Motion rules state: “AI generated videos are not permitted and Sponsor holds the right to request the original video for verification.” The rules also say videos must be taken by the entrant using a light microscope. Nikon’s rules page sets out the restriction, but does not adjudicate Xu’s entry or explain how Nikon will classify this specific post-processing workflow.
Eligibility therefore remains distinct from the scientific question of whether the rendered features are reliable. Nikon’s disclosure of AI-assisted post-processing does not alone answer whether the submitted video counts as an “AI generated” video under its rules. The latest reported step was a review of Xu’s documentation, not a published finding about compliance.

Has Nikon disqualified the entry?
No disqualification was reported in Gizmodo’s October 2 account. It said Nikon was re-reviewing the entry and had received documentation from Xu; it did not report the review’s conclusion. Based on that latest report, the outcome remains unreported.

For now, the clearest account is limited: the video won Nikon’s 2026 contest, Nikon disclosed a neural-network method used to process and visualize grayscale data, and researchers questioned the plausibility of some rendered structures. Whether the workflow complied with Nikon’s contest rule—and what the colored structures represent—remain separate questions not resolved by the reports cited here.
