Scrolling stutter in a Flutter macOS app is a frame-budget problem. A frame that runs long drops out of smooth motion, and the fix is whichever change removes the overrun on the thread that causes it. The reliable way to find that change is to reproduce the stutter in profile mode, read the frame data, change one suspected cause at a time, and record the same trace again.
This guide does not describe a specific application, Flutter version, code change, or before-and-after measurement. The official Flutter documentation cited below explains how to diagnose these problems, but it does not say which change fixed any particular app or by how much. Treat the sections below as a method for finding your own cause, not as a report of a verified fix.

What the official guidance establishes
Flutter’s documentation supports a small set of claims that matter for macOS scrolling work:

Debug-mode timings do not represent release behaviour, so a stutter seen in debug builds is only a starting signal.
- DevTools’ Performance view works for desktop apps, and its frame chart separates work into UI-thread and raster-thread activity. That split tells you whether a frame is spending its time in Dart and framework code or in rendering.
- Long lists and grids should use lazy builder APIs so items are built as they scroll into view.
- Unnecessary rebuilds, eagerly constructed large lists, and costly layout passes are documented performance concerns. Each is a hypothesis until a trace confirms it in your app.
- If the app hosts native macOS views, slow or blocking work on the platform thread can affect graphics performance. Confirm first that platform views are actually in the widget tree.

Step 1: Reproduce the stutter in profile mode
Start with an action you can repeat exactly: the same window size, the same list, the same scroll distance and speed, and the same data. Random scrolling produces traces that cannot be compared.
- Run the app in profile mode from the project directory with
flutter run -d macos --profile. - Open DevTools from the running session, then switch to the Performance tab.
- Perform the scroll action three to five times and note where the frames look uneven.
- Record the Flutter SDK version (
flutter --version), the macOS version, the Mac model, and the display refresh rate. Keep these fixed for every later comparison.
Step 2: Read the frame chart
Each frame has a build cost on the UI thread and a rasterisation cost on the raster thread. Flutter’s Performance view documentation states the threshold that matters: “A frame that takes longer than 16ms to render causes jank (jerky motion) on the display device.” That 16 ms figure is the budget for a 60 Hz display. Flutter notes that 120 Hz devices have a shorter budget, so on a ProMotion display a frame has to finish sooner to stay smooth.

Read the chart by asking which thread overruns:
- UI thread over budget: the cost is in building widgets, running Dart code, or laying out the tree. Look at rebuilds and list construction.
- Raster thread over budget: the cost is in drawing. Look at layers, large or complex painting, and any platform view involvement.
- Both threads quiet but motion still stutters: check whether the stutter comes from work outside the frame, such as garbage collection pauses or platform-thread blocking, before changing widget code.
Step 3: Test the likely causes one at a time
Eager construction of a long list
If the list builds every row up front, frame cost grows with the number of items and the first scroll can be expensive. Flutter’s Scrolling guide recommends lazy construction for long lists and grids: “When you have a long list of items in your ListView or GridView (including an infinite list), you can build the items on demand as they scroll into view.” In practice this means replacing a children list with ListView.builder or GridView.builder. Confirm the change in the trace: the UI-thread cost on scroll should drop, and the number of built items should track the visible window.

Excess rebuilds
A state change high in the tree can rebuild rows that did not change. The Improving rendering performance page describes this pattern and the standard remedies. Narrow the scope of the state, move stable subtrees out of the rebuilt region, and check the trace to see whether the rebuild count per frame actually falls.

Expensive layout
Some layout operations, including intrinsic-size passes, can make a frame do more work than a single layout would require. The Performance best practices page covers lazy builders and intrinsic layout passes. Inside a scrolling list, look for intrinsic widgets wrapping each row, and replace them with fixed or explicitly sized layouts where the design allows.
Native macOS platform views
If the app embeds native AppKit content through Flutter’s platform view mechanism, the platform thread and graphics synchronisation can become the bottleneck. Flutter’s Hosting native macOS views in your Flutter app with Platform Views page states: “As such, any slow or blocking operations on the platform thread can negatively impact Flutter graphics performance.” Before investigating this layer, confirm that a platform view is actually on screen during the stutter. If none is present, this cause does not apply.

Measuring a change
A change counts only if the same trace, taken under the same conditions, shows a different result. Record the following for each run:

Compare the tail metrics as closely as the averages. A change that lowers the average while leaving the 99th percentile or worst frame unchanged may not remove visible hitches.

Automating the scroll trace
To make the comparison repeatable, Flutter’s Measure performance with an integration test recipe wraps a scroll in traceAction() and saves a performance summary. The sample in that recipe is general Flutter guidance rather than a macOS-specific result, so use it to structure your own test, not as evidence of expected numbers for your app.
A validation checklist
- The stutter reproduces in profile mode with the same action on each run.
- The thread that overruns is identified from the frame chart before any code change.
- Only one suspected cause changed between traces.
- Build and raster timings were captured for the same number of scroll passes, device, and display refresh rate.
- Average, 90th percentile, 99th percentile, and worst frame times are all reported.
- The Flutter SDK and Dart versions are recorded with the results.

The Bottom Line
Find the overrunning thread in a profile-mode trace, then change one cause at a time and compare tail frame times under identical conditions. Whether lazy lists, rebuild scope, layout, or platform views are the culprit depends entirely on what your own trace shows.
