Choose Diablo if you want a character-building loop
Diablo IV is presented by Blizzard as an action RPG with skill trees, character progression, loot and an endgame. Those features make it the natural choice if you want combat to feed into decisions about how your character develops, what equipment to pursue and what to tackle next. Blizzard’s catalog also lists Diablo, Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo III and Diablo Immortal alongside Diablo IV, so the franchise includes multiple entries rather than one single game or play style. Choose DOOM if you want direct single-player combat
Bethesda describes DOOM: The Dark Ages as a single-player dark fantasy/sci-fi game and the third installment of the modern DOOM series, set as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. Its official description foregrounds grounded combat and tools such as the Shield Saw and Super Shotgun. What “better” means here
These franchises share a broad premise—fighting Hell—but the available official descriptions point to different priorities. Diablo’s appeal, as described by Blizzard, is character progression and loot within an action RPG. DOOM’s, as described by Bethesda, is single-player action and direct combat. No comparable official statistic establishes a winner by sales, player count or review score, and the sources do not settle a universal quality ranking.
For the DOOM side of that identity, id Software says its guiding principle is to create innovative and immersive worlds that deliver an intense gaming experience. That is the studio’s own statement, not a third-party verdict on the franchise. id Software’s official site

How to make the choice
- Pick Diablo if the appeal of fighting Hell is developing a character through builds, skills, loot and endgame activity.
- Pick DOOM if the appeal is a single-player campaign built around immediate combat and weapons.
- If you are choosing an entry rather than a franchise, check the current game page for the edition and platform you intend to use.
