Diablo 4 can become increasingly unstable on Windows when RAM usage climbs during extended sessions, leading to stuttering, long load times, texture pop-in, freezes, or sudden crashes. While this is often described as a memory leak, the cause can vary between game bugs, graphics settings, driver problems, corrupted files, background apps, or Windows memory management issues.
The good news is that many players can reduce excessive RAM usage with practical troubleshooting rather than waiting for a single fix. Updating the game, lowering memory-heavy visuals, refreshing GPU drivers, repairing files, and checking system health can all help make Diablo 4 run more smoothly during longer play sessions.

What Causes the Diablo 4 Memory Leak on Windows?
A Diablo 4 memory leak on Windows usually appears as steadily rising RAM or VRAM usage while the game is running, even when you stay in the same area or repeat similar activities. Over time, this can lead to longer loading screens, texture pop-in, stuttering, frame-time spikes, audio hitching, freezes, or crashes to desktop. In some cases, the issue is not a true leak in the strict technical sense, but excessive memory allocation, poor memory cleanup, driver behavior, or Windows paging under heavy load.
One common source is high graphics settings that keep large assets loaded for long periods. Diablo 4 can be demanding when texture quality, shadow quality, clutter density, geometry detail, and high-resolution assets are enabled, especially at 1440p, ultrawide, or 4K. Systems with limited VRAM may spill data into system RAM, and once Windows starts using the page file heavily, performance can degrade sharply. Players with 8GB of system RAM or GPUs with lower VRAM are more likely to notice stutter during extended sessions, but even higher-end PCs can be affected if settings exceed available memory headroom.

Drivers and overlays can also contribute to excessive memory use. Outdated or corrupted GPU drivers may mishandle shader caches, texture streaming, or DirectX resources. Third-party overlays from Discord, GeForce Experience, AMD Software, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and recording tools can hook into the game process and add extra memory overhead. Browser tabs, launchers, RGB control software, hardware monitoring suites, and antivirus scans running in the background can further reduce available RAM and make Diablo 4 more unstable during long play sessions.
Common causes to check first
- High texture settings: These can quickly consume VRAM and force Windows to rely on slower system memory or paging.
- Long uninterrupted sessions: Memory use may build up over time after changing zones, opening menus, running dungeons, or teleporting frequently.
- Driver issues: Buggy, outdated, or poorly installed NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU drivers can cause abnormal resource usage.
- Damaged game files: Missing or corrupted data can trigger loading problems, repeated asset requests, or crashes.
- Bloated background processes: Web browsers, overlays, capture tools, and launchers can compete with the game for RAM.
- Windows paging pressure: A small or disabled page file can make crashes more likely when physical RAM is exhausted.
- Configuration conflicts: Old settings files, leftover cache data, or changed hardware profiles can cause unstable behavior after patches.
Server-side activity and game updates can sometimes make the problem feel inconsistent. After a major patch, seasonal update, or new driver release, shader compilation and asset caching may temporarily increase CPU, disk, and memory usage. The game may seem fine for the first 20 minutes, then degrade after several dungeon runs or visits to busy towns. This pattern is often a combination of memory pressure, cached assets, and background services rather than a single obvious failure.
Because the symptoms can come from several layers at once, the best fix is usually a combination of steps: update the game, reduce the heaviest graphics options, refresh GPU drivers, close unnecessary apps, repair files, reset configuration data, and make sure Windows has enough virtual memory. The next sections walk through those fixes in a practical order, starting with updates before moving into settings and system-level troubleshooting.
Check Diablo 4 and Battle.net for Updates
Before changing graphics settings or reinstalling drivers, make sure both Diablo 4 and the Battle.net desktop app are fully updated. Memory leaks and excessive RAM usage are often reduced through client patches, hotfixes, shader fixes, and stability updates pushed through Battle.net. If your game client is even one patch behind, you may still be running code with known performance problems, especially after a new season, expansion update, or major balance patch.
Open the Battle.net app, select Diablo IV from your game library, then check the button near the bottom-left of the game page. If it says Update, install the update before launching the game. If it says Play, click the gear icon next to the Play button and select Check for Updates. This forces Battle.net to scan for any available Diablo 4 patch that may not have appeared automatically. After the update finishes, fully exit Battle.net from the system tray and reopen it before starting the game again.
Update the Battle.net Desktop App
The Battle.net launcher itself can also affect patching, file scanning, login services, overlays, and game startup behavior. An outdated or partially updated launcher may fail to apply Diablo 4 updates correctly or leave background processes running longer than expected. Battle.net usually updates automatically, but you can trigger a fresh check by closing the app completely and reopening it while connected to the internet.
- Right-click the Battle.net icon in the Windows system tray and choose Exit.
- Reopen Battle.net from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
- Wait for any launcher update to download and install.
- Select Diablo IV and use Check for Updates from the gear menu.
- Restart your PC if the launcher or game update appears stuck or incomplete.
If Battle.net does not update properly, clear the launcher cache. Close Battle.net, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, and end any remaining Battle.net, Blizzard Update Agent, or Agent.exe processes. Then press Windows + R, type %ProgramData%, and delete the Battle.net and Blizzard Entertainment cache folders if present. Reopen Battle.net afterward; it will recreate the required files and check for fresh launcher data.

After installing updates, it is worth reading recent Diablo 4 patch s on Blizzard’s official site or launcher news panel. Look for mentions of crash fixes, VRAM usage, texture streaming, stability improvements, or performance fixes on PC. If a new patch introduced worse stuttering or higher RAM usage, the issue may be widespread rather than specific to your system. In that case, keep the game updated and apply the remaining fixes in this guide to reduce the impact during long sessions.
Once everything is updated, launch Diablo 4 and test RAM usage in the same type of area where the problem usually appears, such as Kyovashad, Helltides, Legion Events, or long dungeon runs. If memory usage still climbs steadily over time, continue with graphics, driver, and Windows-level troubleshooting. Keeping the game and launcher current will not solve every memory leak, but it removes one of the most common causes of crashes and performance degradation on Windows.
Lower Graphics Settings That Increase Memory Usage
Diablo 4 can become increasingly unstable during long sessions when graphics options keep more assets loaded in memory than your system can comfortably handle. This is most noticeable on PCs with 8GB to 16GB of RAM, GPUs with limited VRAM, or systems running the high-resolution texture pack. If you see RAM or VRAM usage climbing over time, followed by stuttering, delayed texture loading, freezes, or crashes, lowering the heaviest settings is one of the quickest fixes to try.
Start with Texture Quality, because it has the biggest impact on VRAM and can also affect system RAM when video memory runs out. If you installed Diablo 4’s high-resolution assets, using Ultra textures can push memory usage much higher than expected, especially at 1440p or 4K. Set Texture Quality to High or Medium, then restart the game so the new texture allocation fully applies. Players on GPUs with 6GB to 8GB of VRAM should avoid Ultra textures during extended play sessions.
Settings to lower first
- Texture Quality: Drop from Ultra to High or Medium to reduce VRAM pressure and texture streaming issues.
- Shadow Quality: Lower to Medium to reduce memory usage and GPU load in towns, dungeons, and large fights.
- Shader Quality: Set to Medium if you notice stutter when entering new areas or during heavy spell effects.
- Clutter Quality: Lower this to reduce the amount of environmental detail loaded into scenes.
- Fog Quality: Reduce to Medium or Low, especially if performance drops in dense outdoor zones.
- Screen Space Reflections: Turn off or lower, as reflections can increase rendering load without much visual benefit during combat.
- View Distance: Lower one step if RAM usage rises in open-world areas or while mounted.
Resolution and scaling options also matter. Running Diablo 4 at 4K uses substantially more VRAM than 1080p or 1440p, and this can amplify memory-related crashes if the GPU is already close to its limit. If you are playing at 4K, try lowering the render resolution or enabling DLSS, FSR, or XeSS, depending on your GPU. Use a balanced or quality preset rather than pushing native resolution with every setting maxed out.
It is also worth capping the frame rate. An uncapped frame rate can keep the GPU under constant maximum load, increasing heat, power draw, and the speed at which memory-related problems appear. In Diablo 4’s graphics settings, enable a foreground FPS cap that matches your monitor, such as 60, 120, or 144 FPS. Set a lower background FPS cap, such as 30 FPS, so the game does not continue using excessive resources while tabbed out.
After changing settings, fully close and relaunch Diablo 4 rather than immediately continuing the same session. Play for at least 20 to 30 minutes while watching RAM and VRAM usage in Task Manager, MSI Afterburner, or your GPU software. If memory usage stabilizes and stuttering takes longer to appear or disappears entirely, the issue was likely being worsened by high asset quality or excessive rendering load. If usage still climbs aggressively with moderate settings, continue with driver, file repair, and Windows-level troubleshooting.

Update or Clean Install Your GPU Drivers
Outdated, corrupted, or poorly upgraded graphics drivers can make Diablo 4 appear to have a memory leak even when the root problem is driver-level resource handling. Because the game streams large textures, effects, shaders, and assets while you move through zones, the GPU driver has to manage both VRAM and shared system memory correctly. If that management breaks down, you may see rising RAM usage, long-session stuttering, texture pop-in, crashes to desktop, or severe frame-time spikes after teleporting or entering busy areas.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by installing the latest driver from your GPU manufacturer rather than relying only on Windows Update. NVIDIA users should check GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA driver download page, AMD users should use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, and Intel Arc or integrated GPU users should use Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Diablo 4 updates and seasonal patches can introduce rendering changes, so a driver that worked well months ago may not be ideal after a major game update.
Perform a standard driver update first
- Close Diablo 4 and the Battle.net launcher completely.
- Download the newest Game Ready, Adrenalin, or Intel graphics driver for your exact GPU model and Windows version.
- Run the installer and choose the clean installation option if it is offered.
- Restart Windows after the installation finishes, even if the installer does not force a reboot.
- Launch Diablo 4 and test the same area or activity where RAM usage previously climbed quickly.
If the issue began immediately after a new driver update, try rolling back to the previous stable version instead. New drivers often improve performance in current games, but they can also introduce regressions on specific GPUs, multi-monitor setups, overlays, or laptops with hybrid graphics. In Windows, you can open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, select Properties, and check the Driver tab for a rollback option. If it is unavailable, download an older driver manually from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
Use a clean install for persistent crashes or memory growth
When Diablo 4 keeps stuttering after an hour or two, or RAM usage continues to rise across sessions, a deeper clean install may help. Standard driver updates can leave behind shader caches, profiles, telemetry components, and old configuration files. These leftovers can conflict with newer driver packages or game profiles, especially after mulle updates over several months.
- NVIDIA: choose Custom Installation, then select Perform a clean installation. Re-enable only the features you actually use, such as the driver and PhysX, and skip extra recording or overlay tools if troubleshooting.
- AMD: use the Factory Reset option in the Adrenalin installer when available. After reinstalling, avoid enabling aggressive tuning, Radeon Chill, Enhanced Sync, or recording features until Diablo 4 is stable.
- Intel: remove the current graphics package from Apps & features, restart, then install the latest Intel graphics driver package for your system.
For stubborn cases, many players use Display Driver Uninstaller in Windows Safe Mode to remove GPU drivers completely before reinstalling. This can be effective, but it should be done carefully: download the replacement driver first, disconnect from the internet temporarily to stop Windows from auto-installing a generic driver, run the cleanup, restart, and then install the fresh driver package. Afterward, clear Diablo 4’s shader cache by simply launching the game and allowing it to rebuild shaders during the first run.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Once the driver is refreshed, keep the test environment simple. Disable GeForce Experience overlay, AMD overlay, Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar recording, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner monitoring, and browser hardware acceleration temporarily. These tools hook into the renderer and can increase memory pressure or cause conflicts during long sessions. If Diablo 4 becomes stable, re-enable them one at a time to identify which component was contributing to excessive RAM usage or crashes.
Close Background Apps and Monitor RAM Usage
Diablo 4 can become much less stable when it has to compete with browsers, launchers, capture tools, RGB utilities, chat apps, and overlay software for memory. Even if the game itself is the main consumer of RAM, background programs can push total usage high enough that Windows starts paging data to disk, which often shows up as hitching, delayed texture loading, longer zone transitions, or crashes during extended sessions.
Before launching the game, close anything you do not need for the session. Web browsers are a common culprit, especially with many tabs open or video streams running. Also check apps such as Discord, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, OBS, GeForce Experience, AMD Software, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, Razer Synapse, Corsair iCUE, Logitech G Hub, and motherboard monitoring tools. You do not need to uninstall them; simply exiting them while testing can help identify whether one is contributing to memory pressure or conflicts.
Check memory usage in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes, then click the Memory column to sort apps by RAM usage.
- Close high-usage apps that are not required while playing.
- Launch Diablo 4 and play normally for a while.
- Alt-tab back to Task Manager and check whether Diablo IV.exe keeps steadily climbing in memory usage over time.
A gradual increase during normal gameplay can happen as assets are loaded, but RAM usage that keeps rising without settling, especially across town visits, dungeon runs, or mulle teleport sessions, may indicate a leak or cache behavior that your system cannot absorb. If total memory usage approaches 90-100%, Windows may begin aggressively using the page file, causing severe stutter even on otherwise capable hardware.

Disable overlays and recording features
Overlays can be useful, but they also hook into the game and can add instability on some systems. For testing, disable the Battle.net overlay, Discord overlay, NVIDIA overlay, AMD overlay, Steam overlay if applicable, and Xbox Game Bar. Also turn off background recording features such as Instant Replay, Highlights, or Game DVR. If performance improves, re-enable them one at a time to find the specific source of the problem.
- Discord: User Settings > Game Overlay > turn off in-game overlay.
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience: Settings > In-game overlay > off.
- AMD Software: Settings > Preferences > disable overlay and recording options.
- Windows: Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and Captures > disable unnecessary capture features.
For longer play sessions, it can also help to restart the Battle.net client before launching Diablo 4, rather than leaving it open for days. If you use hardware monitoring tools, limit them to one at a time and avoid aggressive polling intervals. After testing, keep a simple baseline: Diablo 4, Battle.net, your audio/chat app if needed, and no extra overlays. This makes it easier to tell whether stuttering and memory growth are coming from the game, a driver component, or another application running alongside it.
Repair Game Files and Reset Configuration Files
If Diablo 4 starts consuming more RAM after a patch, crashes when loading zones, or stutters more the longer you play, damaged game data or a bad local configuration file can be part of the problem. Corrupted assets, incomplete update files, or settings carried over from older builds may cause the client to reload resources inefficiently or fail to release memory properly. Before reinstalling the entire game, use Battle.net’s repair tool and reset Diablo 4’s local settings.
Scan and repair Diablo 4 in Battle.net
The Battle.net launcher includes a built-in file verification tool that checks the installed game files against Blizzard’s current version. This can replace missing, outdated, or corrupted files without deleting your character data, since your characters and progression are stored online.
- Close Diablo 4 completely.
- Open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Select Diablo IV from your game library.
- Click the gear icon next to the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair.
- Click Begin Scan and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Battle.net, launch the game, and test performance during a normal play session.
If the scan finds and replaces files, avoid changing mulle other settings immediately afterward. Play for a while with your usual setup and watch whether RAM usage, stuttering, or crashes improve. This makes it easier to tell whether corrupted game files were contributing to the issue.

Reset Diablo 4 configuration files
Diablo 4 stores local preferences such as display mode, resolution, graphics options, and hardware-related settings in configuration files under your Windows documents folder. If these files contain unstable values or settings from an older driver or game version, resetting them can help. This will not delete your online characters, but it can reset graphics and control preferences, so you may need to adjust them again in-game.
- Exit Diablo 4 and close Battle.net.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to Documents, then open the Diablo IV folder.
- Look for files such as LocalPrefs.txt or other configuration files in that folder.
- Rename the file instead of deleting it, for example to LocalPrefs_backup.txt.
- Launch Diablo 4 again so the game creates a fresh configuration file.
- Reapply settings gradually, starting with conservative texture, shadow, and view distance options.
Renaming the configuration file is safer than deleting it because you can restore the backup if needed. After the reset, avoid immediately selecting the highest graphics preset. Start with medium or high textures based on your VRAM, disable unnecessary overlays, and play for at least 20 to 30 minutes while monitoring RAM usage in Task Manager. If performance remains stable, raise individual settings one at a time rather than switching everything to ultra at once.
If repair and configuration reset do not help, a clean reinstall may be worth trying, especially if Diablo 4 has been patched many times on the same installation. Uninstall the game through Battle.net, restart Windows, then reinstall it to a drive with plenty of free space. For best results, keep the game on an SSD, leave extra room for updates and shader cache files, and test the game before restoring any old configuration backups.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Increase Virtual Memory and Check Windows System Health
If Diablo 4 keeps consuming more RAM during extended sessions, Windows may start relying on virtual memory, also called the paging file. This uses part of your SSD or hard drive as overflow memory when physical RAM is under pressure. It is not as fast as real RAM, but having enough virtual memory can help prevent hard crashes, “out of memory” errors, and sudden app closures when Diablo 4, Battle.net, Discord, browsers, and background services are all active.
For most players, the safest option is to let Windows manage the paging file automatically. If it has been disabled or set too low during past performance tweaking, turn it back on. Open Settings, go to System > About, select Advanced system settings, then under Performance choose Settings. Open the Advanced tab, click Change under Virtual memory, and enable Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. Restart the PC afterward before testing Diablo 4 again.
If you prefer a manual setting, place the paging file on your fastest SSD with plenty of free space. A common starting point is an initial size equal to your installed RAM and a maximum size around 1.5 to 3 times your RAM. For example, a system with 16 GB of RAM could use an initial size of 16384 MB and a maximum size of 24576 MB or 32768 MB. Avoid setting extreme values on a nearly full drive, since low disk space can create new stuttering, update failures, or Windows instability.
Run basic Windows health checks
Excessive memory use can be made worse by corrupted system files, storage errors, unstable drivers, or pending Windows updates. Before assuming Diablo 4 is the only problem, check that Windows itself is in good condition. Install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update, including optional driver or platform updates if they are relevant to your hardware. Then restart, even if Windows does not force one immediately.

After changing virtual memory or repairing Windows components, test Diablo 4 with a controlled session. Reboot the PC, launch only Battle.net and the game, then monitor RAM usage in Task Manager while playing for 30 to 60 minutes. If memory usage still climbs without dropping after changing zones, closing menus, or returning to town, combine these system checks with the earlier fixes: lower texture settings, disable unnecessary overlays, repair game files, and keep GPU drivers current.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if Diablo 4 has a memory leak on my PC?
A common sign is RAM usage steadily increasing the longer you play, even when you stay in the same area or repeat similar activities. You may also notice stuttering, longer loading times, texture pop-in, or crashes after an hour or more of gameplay. Use Task Manager or Resource Monitor to watch Diablo 4’s memory usage during a session.
Which Diablo 4 graphics settings should I lower first to reduce RAM or VRAM usage?
Start with Texture Quality, Shadow Quality, Clutter Quality, and View Distance, as these can increase memory usage significantly. If you have limited VRAM, avoid using the highest texture settings and consider disabling high-resolution assets if installed. Lowering these settings can reduce stuttering and make long sessions more stable.
Can outdated GPU drivers cause Diablo 4 to use too much memory?
Yes, driver bugs can contribute to excessive memory usage, crashes, or poor memory cleanup after long play sessions. Update your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics driver from the official driver utility or website. If the issue started after a recent driver update, try a clean driver installation or roll back to a previous stable version.

Will increasing virtual memory fix Diablo 4 crashes?
Increasing virtual memory can help prevent crashes when your system runs out of physical RAM, but it does not directly fix the underlying cause of a memory leak. Set the paging file to system managed, or manually increase it on an SSD if you have frequent out-of-memory errors. This is most useful on systems with 8GB or 16GB of RAM.
Should I reinstall Diablo 4 if memory usage keeps climbing?
Before reinstalling, use Battle.net’s Scan and Repair option and try resetting Diablo 4 configuration files by moving or renaming the game’s settings folder. Corrupted files or bad settings can sometimes cause abnormal performance behavior. If repairs, driver cleanup, Windows updates, and setting changes do not help, a full reinstall may be worth trying as a final step.
Bottom Line
Diablo 4’s memory leak or excessive RAM usage on Windows is often tied to a mix of high texture settings, outdated drivers, background apps, corrupted cache files, overlays, or system-level instability. Lowering demanding in-game settings, updating GPU drivers, clearing cache, disabling overlays, and keeping Windows in good shape can reduce stuttering, crashes, and performance drops during longer sessions.
If the issue keeps returning, monitor RAM usage while you play, test one fix at a time, and consider limiting play sessions until Blizzard or your GPU vendor releases a relevant patch. Start with the easiest changes first—texture quality, overlays, driver updates, and background apps—then move on to deeper Windows troubleshooting if needed.
