Choose a tool by the systems and signals it covers, how well it fits your workflows, whether responders can connect related evidence, and the cost and effort of operating it—not by feature count alone.
What DevOps monitoring tools do
Monitoring tools gather operational signals and make them useful through logs, reports, historical graphs, dashboards, and alerts. Teams use them to notice abnormal behavior, follow service health over time, and investigate incidents. Alerts can be configured to fire when a measured value crosses a chosen threshold. Splunk’s overview of DevOps monitoring describes these common functions.

Monitoring and observability overlap, but the terms are not interchangeable in every vendor’s terminology. A practical distinction is that monitoring tracks known conditions—often through metrics and thresholds—while observability helps a team investigate system behavior, including questions it did not anticipate beforehand. OpenTelemetry describes observability as understanding a system’s internal state through its outputs; that requires instrumented software to emit telemetry and send it to a backend. OpenTelemetry’s observability primer explains the concept.

Which signals matter
Monitoring and observability products commonly work with three core signal types. They answer different questions, so the useful comparison is not just whether a product collects each type, but whether responders can connect them during an investigation.

| Signal | What it shows | When it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Metrics | Numeric measurements or aggregates, such as request rate, error rate, latency, or CPU utilization. | Summarizing service behavior, seeing trends, and triggering alerts on thresholds or ranges. |
| Logs | Timestamped records that describe events in a process or service. | Finding event-level detail behind an unexpected change; their detail can also create substantial data volume. |
| Traces | The path of a request across application components or services. | Locating where a request slowed down or failed, including at a dependency. |
OpenTelemetry’s primer and Grafana Labs’ metrics and telemetry documentation describe these signal types. Some products also handle profiles, deployment events, or user-experience data; treat these as additional capabilities, not as features every monitoring tool necessarily includes.
Correlation is what makes the signals especially useful together: a metric can show when a problem began, a trace can point to the slow dependency, and logs can supply detail about events in that component. Separate dashboards that cannot be connected may leave responders doing the correlation manually.
What OpenTelemetry does—and does not do
OpenTelemetry (OTel) is an open-source, vendor-neutral framework and toolkit for generating, exporting, and collecting telemetry such as traces, metrics, and logs. It provides APIs, SDKs, and a Collector, and can send telemetry to compatible backends. It is not the backend that stores, queries, or visualizes the data: OpenTelemetry states, “OpenTelemetry is not an observability backend itself.”

This separation lets a team standardize instrumentation independently from its choice of monitoring product or backend. OpenTelemetry documentation, last modified August 29, 2025, says that more than 90 observability vendors support it. That is a support count, not a measure of product parity or a guarantee that every integration behaves identically. OpenTelemetry documentation
How to choose a DevOps monitoring tool
Start by writing down the systems the team must observe, the people who respond, and the decisions they need to make during an incident. Then compare candidates against the following criteria, weighted for your environment.
1. Coverage for your actual stack
Check support for the applications, hosts, containers, cloud services, and dependencies you run. Confirm which signals the tool ingests—metrics, logs, and traces at minimum if your workflow needs them—and whether any required profiles or events are supported. A long feature list matters less than reliable coverage of the systems that can affect users.

- (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
- The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
- Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
- Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
- 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
2. Integration and interoperability
Assess how the product fits your existing instrumentation, alerting, incident-response, and deployment workflows. OpenTelemetry support can help keep instrumentation portable across compatible destinations, but verify the specific integrations and data paths you need rather than treating support as a blanket compatibility guarantee.

During an incident, can responders go from an alert to the relevant metric, trace, and logs without losing context? Look for a workflow that helps answer when a change began, which requests or components are affected, and where the failure or delay occurs. The goal is to reduce handoffs and manual searching, not merely to accumulate dashboards.
4. Useful alerts rather than more alerts
Pages should identify user-impacting symptoms and indicate that someone needs to intervene. Latency, errors, and availability are often better paging signals than internal component events by themselves. Reserve dashboards for exploration and context, and avoid making every event a page. Grafana Labs presents this as alerting guidance, not a universal threshold prescription; teams still need to choose conditions appropriate to their service. Grafana Labs’ alerting best practices

5. Cost at your expected data volume
Estimate cost using the volume and retention you actually need, including the effects of detailed logs and increased telemetry as services grow. Compare the operating model as well as any quoted price: the available evidence does not establish current vendor prices, plan limits, or retention terms, so verify those in current official vendor material before deciding.
In Grafana Labs’ 2025 Observability Survey, cost was the top selection criterion overall. Among surveyed respondents, 61% of developers cited ease of use and 53% of SREs cited ease of use; respondents could select multiple criteria. These are survey responses, not market-share figures or universal buyer preferences. Grafana Labs’ 2025 survey findings
6. Usability for the people on call
Evaluate whether the people who must respond can find the relevant service, understand an alert, and follow evidence across signals. A powerful interface that only a small specialist group can use may slow incident response. Include the on-call engineers in an evaluation rather than judging usability only from an administrator’s view.

7. Ownership and exit options
Decide whether a central platform team or individual service teams will own instrumentation, dashboards, and alerts. Also consider how easily you could export data or move to another backend. There is no neutral vendor-by-vendor portability score established here, so test the specific export paths and migration steps that matter to your team.

- List the services and dependencies. Include the applications, infrastructure, and external or internal dependencies whose failures could affect users.
- Map symptoms to signals. For each important failure mode, note which metric could reveal impact, which trace could locate a slow path, and which logs could explain events.
- Define paging rules. Write down the user-facing conditions that require intervention and separate them from events that belong on dashboards.
- Check integration paths. Confirm how existing instrumentation, OpenTelemetry data, incident response, and deployment workflows connect to each candidate.
- Estimate operating cost and effort. Use expected telemetry volume and retention, and account for the people who will maintain instrumentation, dashboards, and alerts.
- Walk through an incident scenario. Ask responders to start from a symptom and find its timeline, affected requests, and relevant event details. This reveals whether the tool supports a coherent investigation rather than disconnected views.
- Verify portability requirements. If switching backends or exporting data matters, confirm the actual route with the systems and data formats your team uses.
Where screenshots fit in a DevOps workflow
A website screenshot is a narrow artifact, not a substitute for metrics, logs, or traces. It can be useful when a team needs a visual record of a page—for example, to inspect a rendered interface or document what a page looked like during an issue. Screenshot APIs do not replace service monitoring, alerting, or incident investigation.
For that specific visual-capture task, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Responses identify whether a page was clean, blocked, blank, timed out, or failed, and only clean shots are billed; cache hits also cost nothing.
