Software maps that logical unit to physical display pixels using platform-specific density or scaling rules, so the conversion is not universal.
What is a device-independent pixel?
A physical pixel is a hardware element of a display. A logical pixel belongs to a software coordinate system. Since screens pack different numbers of physical pixels into a given area, the same physical-pixel measurement can look larger on one screen and smaller on another. A logical unit lets an interface describe dimensions in a way that can be scaled for display density.

“Device-independent pixel” is a broad description rather than one universal unit definition. Android density-independent pixels (dp) and Windows Direct2D device-independent pixels (DIPs), for example, use different reference scales and conversion formulas.
How Android dp converts to physical pixels
Android defines dp as a flexible layout unit that scales with screen density. Its reference screen is 160 dpi, where 1 dp is roughly 1 physical pixel. Android’s conversion is dp = (width in pixels × 160) / screen density. Use dp for layout dimensions rather than assuming a fixed physical-pixel size. Android’s grids and units guidance documents this baseline and formula.

Density scaling helps preserve the apparent size of an element, but it does not make every screen the same size or shape. Available space and aspect ratio still vary, so a layout must adapt to screen dimensions and form factor. Android’s screen-density guide explains the distinction.
How Windows DIP converts to physical pixels
Microsoft defines a Direct2D DIP as 1/96 of a logical inch. The conversion is physical pixels = DIPs × DPI / 96. At 96 DPI, 1 DIP maps to 1 physical pixel; at 144 DPI, it maps to 1.5 physical pixels. For example, 200 DIPs at 144 DPI render as 300 physical pixels. These are definition-based conversions, not measurements of a particular screen. Microsoft’s Direct2D documentation describes the DIP scale.

Coordinate systems can differ even within one application. Microsoft notes that Win32 mouse-event coordinates are in physical pixels while Direct2D drawing uses DIPs. Convert values when passing coordinates between those systems. Microsoft’s high-DPI guidance covers this issue.
How dp and DIP differ from other logical units
| Platform or context | Logical unit | Documented relationship | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android layout | dp | Roughly 1 physical pixel at 160 dpi; Android gives dp = px × 160 / density. |
Use for layout dimensions. |
| Android text | sp | The default sp value equals dp, but rendered text size also responds to the user’s preferred font size. | Use for text sizes that should respect system text-size preferences. |
| Windows Direct2D | DIP | 1/96 logical inch; px = DIP × DPI / 96. |
Convert when crossing between DIP drawing and physical-pixel coordinate systems. |
| Web | CSS pixel | devicePixelRatio reports the ratio of physical device pixels to CSS pixels for the current display. |
Do not assume a CSS pixel is one physical display pixel. |
| iOS (archived documentation) | Point | A floating-point logical coordinate; the system maps points to device pixels. | A comparable abstraction, not a guaranteed numerical equivalent of dp or DIP. |
Why Android uses sp for text
Android’s sp unit has a similar density-aware role to dp, but it also accounts for a user’s preferred text size. The default sp value equals dp; system settings can change the rendered text size. Use sp where text should follow those preferences, rather than using dp as though it were an accessibility-aware text unit. Android’s density documentation describes sp.

How CSS pixels and iOS points compare
On the web, a CSS pixel is a logical measurement, not necessarily one physical display pixel. The browser’s devicePixelRatio property reports the ratio between physical device pixels and CSS pixels for the current display. See MDN’s devicePixelRatio reference for the property and its behavior.
Apple’s archived iOS view documentation describes points as floating-point coordinate values and says the system normally maps the user coordinate space to device pixels. This is useful as a conceptual comparison, but the cited material is archived and should not be treated as current API guidance. Apple’s archived view documentation explains the point-based coordinate system.
Quick Recap

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
What to do when converting interface measurements
- Use the unit expected by the framework where the layout or drawing code runs.
- Use the platform’s documented scale rather than assuming dp, DIP, CSS pixels, points, and physical pixels are interchangeable.
- When coordinates cross between logical and physical systems, apply the relevant conversion at that boundary.
- For Android text that should follow user font settings, use sp; use dp for layout dimensions.
- Design for the target screen’s available space and form factor as well as its pixel density.
