Choose by the outcome you want: Hashnode for a branded developer blog, DEV Community for developer-focused discussion, Medium for a chance to reach readers beyond that community, or an independently managed site for a publishing home you control. The title does not identify a fourth named service, so the fourth option here is a category—not a claim about a specific product.

How the four options differ

The three named platforms offer distinct publishing environments; an independent site is a different approach whose features depend on the tools you choose. None guarantees readership, search visibility, or income. Before choosing, ask: How will readers find this post?

Option Best fit Brand and domain Community and distribution Monetization Workflow
Hashnode A branded developer blog Emphasizes a blog associated with your brand. Custom-domain mapping is listed as a Pro feature by Hashnode; confirm current plan details. You may need to bring readers yourself. No direct payout claim established here. Supports GitHub Markdown backup and publishing through its GitHub app, according to Hashnode documentation.
DEV Community (dev.to) Developer-oriented publishing and discussion Articles are hosted on dev.to rather than a custom domain, according to the 2026 comparison. A developer community is central to its appeal, though publishing does not guarantee views or feedback. No direct writer payout claim established here. Useful for writers who want to publish in a community setting.
Medium Writing that may appeal beyond a developer-only audience Publishing is associated with a Medium profile. The 2026 comparison positions it as a route to a broader tech readership; reach is not guaranteed. Among these three, it is the one identified as offering direct writer payouts through its Partner Program. Eligibility and payout rules are not established here. A managed publishing service; current program and publishing terms should be checked with Medium.
Independently managed personal site Writers who want a publishing home they manage Can be built around the writer’s own identity and domain, depending on the chosen setup. Distribution is the writer’s responsibility unless the selected tools provide otherwise. Could support indirect routes such as sponsorships or consulting, but income is not assured. This is a category, not a named service. Costs, setup, maintenance, and features depend on the tools selected.

The comparison of the first three reflects a 2026 overview published by daily.dev. Platform features and policies can change; technical details and plan requirements should be checked before relying on them.

Hashnode: a branded blog with a GitHub workflow

Hashnode is the strongest fit when you want a developer-focused blog tied to your identity and value a managed publishing service with GitHub integration. Its documentation describes backing up Markdown to GitHub and publishing through its GitHub app: Hashnode’s introduction to Blogs.

There is a practical distinction between wanting a custom domain and needing one: Hashnode’s vendor comparison lists custom-domain mapping and GraphQL API/headless mode as Pro features, while also saying a free tier is available to start. Its listed Pro price was $5 per month per publication when the page was accessed; pricing is volatile, so check Hashnode’s current plan page before budgeting. A custom domain can strengthen a publication’s identity, but does not create an audience by itself.

DEV Community: publishing alongside developer discussion

DEV Community suits writers who want to publish in a developer-oriented environment and take part in discussion. A 2024 comparison describes DEV as a place for developers to write articles, join discussions, and build professional profiles; the newer 2026 comparison likewise emphasizes community and feedback. Neither establishes that a post will reliably attract comments, views, career opportunities, or search placement.

The 2026 comparison reports that DEV articles are hosted on dev.to and that the platform supports canonical URLs for syndicated articles. Because publishing settings and search behavior can change, check the current editor settings before republishing an article or relying on a canonical URL. A canonical setting is a technical signal, not a promise of search results.

Medium: broader potential reach and possible payouts

Medium is worth considering when your writing may interest readers outside a developer-only community and you are interested in possible direct platform payouts. The 2026 comparison identifies its Partner Program as the direct-payout option among Hashnode, DEV, and Medium. That is not a promise of earnings: current eligibility, payout rules, and how distribution affects a particular writer were not established here. Read Medium’s current program terms before treating payouts as part of a plan.

An independent site: a publishing home you manage

A personal or custom-domain site is a useful fourth path if control over the publishing home matters more than joining a particular platform’s community. It is not one product, and the right setup could vary widely. The available evidence does not establish a particular builder or host, costs, maintenance requirements, or a default feature set, so those need to be evaluated for the tools you choose.

Do not assume that operating your own site automatically improves search performance or makes an audience easier to build. You still need a distribution plan, and the work involved depends on your setup. This option makes most sense when you are willing to choose and manage the underlying publishing tools rather than use a single hosted writing service.

How to choose

  • Choose Hashnode if a branded developer blog and GitHub-connected writing workflow are priorities.
  • Choose DEV if you want to publish within a developer community and participate in its discussion environment.
  • Choose Medium if your subject can reach a broader readership and you want to investigate the possibility of Partner Program payouts.
  • Choose an independent site if you want to manage your own publishing home and are prepared to select and maintain its tools.

For any option, decide how you will help the intended readers discover each post—through an existing audience, relevant communities, a newsletter, or other channels suited to the work. Platform choice alone cannot supply that plan.
