To make a developer CV easier for both applicant tracking systems (ATS) and people to read, use a simple layout, clear headings, explicit dates, and job-specific terms tied to work you can explain. No format or keyword recipe guarantees an interview: employers configure different systems and screening workflows. The practical goal is to reduce avoidable parsing ambiguity while making your experience easy to assess.
What an ATS does—and what it cannot promise
An ATS can help an employer collect and parse application documents into searchable information. Recruiters may then search that information or use employer-defined screening steps. The system and the hiring workflow vary, so “ATS-friendly” is not a universal score or a guarantee that a CV will pass a gate. The University of Texas at Austin explains ATS use in its Applicant Tracking Systems guide; Roche describes how parsing can support recruiter searches in its Resume Parsing FAQ.

Roche Careers puts the overlap between machine-readable and human-readable documents simply: “Fortunately, ATS-friendly resume formatting is very similar to recruiter-friendly resume formatting.” A clear document helps a system identify information and helps a recruiter quickly understand what you have done.

Chronological format
For most candidates with relevant employment history, list roles in reverse chronological order, starting with the current or most recent position. Give each role an explicit title, employer, and consistent dates. This makes progression and timing easier to follow.

Combination format
If you are changing roles, returning after a gap, or need to foreground transferable strengths, add a focused summary or skills section while keeping a detailed employment timeline. A skills-only or functional format can obscure when and where you used those skills, making it harder for both software and recruiters to interpret your experience. CareerOneStop discusses resume formats and chronology in its formatting guide.
A practical section order
- Contact Information: Put your name, email, phone number, and relevant professional profile or portfolio links in the document body.
- Summary (optional): State your role focus and the most relevant evidence for the vacancy, not a generic objective.
- Skills: List relevant languages, frameworks, platforms, databases, and practices in plain text.
- Experience: Show roles in reverse chronological order with clear titles, employers, dates, and evidence-rich bullets.
- Projects (when useful): Include projects that add credible evidence, especially if they demonstrate skills not shown in paid work.
- Education: List relevant degrees, training, or credentials with clear names and dates where appropriate.
Keep the layout simple and the reading order obvious
Use a single-column document, ordinary text, familiar section headings, consistent date formats, and standard bullets. Avoid making important information depend on tables, text boxes, multiple columns, logos, graphics, images, or charts: some systems may scramble or miss content arranged that way. Do not place essential contact details or work history only in a header or footer. These choices also make the page easier to scan on screen.
- Use recognizable headings such as “Experience,” “Skills,” and “Education.”
- Write dates consistently, for example “Jan 2023 – Mar 2025,” and make the sequence of roles explicit.
- Keep job titles and employer names as ordinary text rather than embedding them in graphics.
- Use standard bullets and readable spacing; do not use visual design to carry information that the text does not state.
UT Austin’s ATS guidance and CareerOneStop’s formatting advice both support straightforward formatting. Specific systems differ, so a simple layout reduces avoidable risk rather than guaranteeing perfect extraction.

Choose DOCX or PDF according to the application instructions
There is no single file type supported as the best choice by all the reviewed guidance. Roche says DOCX is parsed most accurately while noting that PDF can preserve formatting. Indeed recommends DOCX unless an employer asks for another type. CareerOneStop recommends PDF when no other format is specified because it preserves layout.
| File type | What the cited guidance says | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| DOCX | Roche favors it for parsing accuracy; Indeed recommends it unless the employer specifies another type. (Roche; Indeed) | A reasonable parser-oriented default if the portal gives no instructions. |
| CareerOneStop favors it when no other format is specified to preserve formatting; Roche also notes that PDFs preserve layout. (CareerOneStop; Roche) | Useful when preserving appearance matters and the portal accepts it. |
Follow the employer’s upload instructions first. If none are given, a clean DOCX is a reasonable parser-oriented default, but the cited advice is not unanimous. Keep an editable source document and inspect the file after export or upload to catch broken spacing, missing text, or an unexpected reading order.
Tailor technical keywords without stuffing them
Read the vacancy and identify its prominent requirements: language and runtime, frameworks, cloud platforms, databases, delivery practices, domain knowledge, and role responsibilities. Use the terms that genuinely match your background. Include them where they make sense—in a concise summary, a scannable skills list, and, most importantly, experience or project bullets that show how you used them.

- Use the posting’s terminology when it accurately describes your experience; do not claim an unsupported skill just because it appears in the vacancy.
- Do not hide keywords in white text, add an unsubstantiated keyword dump, or list technologies you cannot discuss.
- Do not present the target job title as a past title unless it was actually your title.
- Pair a technology with a concrete action and purpose so a recruiter can judge the depth and relevance of your experience.
UT Austin’s ATS guidance recommends tailoring to the job description, while Roche cautions that keyword presence alone does not show the strength or value of experience. The terms help discovery; context helps people evaluate them.
Write bullets that prove what you built or improved
A useful developer bullet identifies the work, the tools used, what the work did, and—when you have reliable evidence—the outcome. UT Austin Career Services’ technical-resume formula is to describe what you “built (app/project description) using (language/tools) to do (description of what it does).”
Use this adaptable pattern: Built [service, tool, or product feature] using [language or platform] to [function], resulting in [measured outcome, if documented].

For example, if your records support it, name the service or feature, its actual stack, the function it performs, and a measured improvement. If you do not have a reliable metric, explain the function, scope, or engineering contribution without manufacturing a percentage, traffic figure, latency change, user count, or business result. Indeed recommends metrics where possible; “where possible” does not mean guessing. UT Austin’s resume guidance provides additional technical-resume advice.
Make the page work for the human reader too
A skills list makes technologies easy to scan, but the experience and project sections should show what you did with them. Keep a summary focused on role fit, use plain language to explain the product or problem, and make spelling, capitalization, and dates consistent. A recruiter should not have to infer whether a tool was used in production, in a personal project, or only studied.
- Choose a small number of relevant skills rather than giving every technology equal prominence.
- Use bullets to distinguish ownership, collaboration, maintenance, and delivery accurately.
- Explain the purpose of unfamiliar internal project names or acronyms.
- Check that the document’s visual order matches its text order and that the exported file remains legible.
Review the CV against the vacancy before submitting
- Check relevance: Compare the role’s core requirements with your summary, skills, and strongest experience or project evidence.
- Check truthfulness: Remove any keyword or claim you cannot substantiate and explain in an interview.
- Check extraction-friendly structure: Confirm the headings, titles, dates, and contact details are plain text and appear in a logical order.
- Check the file: Use the portal’s requested type, then open the final uploaded or exported file and review its contents and layout.
- Check the human scan: Make sure the most relevant evidence is easy to find without reading a technology list as a substitute for accomplishments.
What ATS advice does—and does not—establish
Career guidance supports clear formatting, relevant terminology, and evidence tied to a vacancy. The cited sources do not establish a universal ATS score, a guaranteed pass, or a reliable percentage of CVs automatically rejected by ATS. Avoid treating viral rejection-rate figures as settled facts without an original study and a clear method. A well-structured CV improves clarity; hiring outcomes still depend on the employer’s requirements, screening choices, and human assessment.
