The best-documented examples include a remote-controlled beach sifter at Belle Isle, contractor-operated remote mowers, and Ottonomy robots used in a short food-scrap pilot.
What Detroit’s robots have actually done
“Robots” here covers several technologies, not one fleet of self-directed machines. The documented systems range from a remote-controlled beach cleaner to remote-controlled mowers and a food-scrap pilot using delivery robots. A separate passenger shuttle program is autonomous mobility, not a garbage-collection robot.

How the beach-cleaning robot works
Axios reported in April 2024 that Detroit announced a BeBot pilot for Belle Isle Beach, expected to begin on Earth Day, April 22. The electric, remote-controlled machine sifts sand to collect ordinary litter and plastic pieces at least 1 cm in size. The announced date establishes the pilot’s planned start, not that it remains in operation now.
Axios reported that a $150,000 grant from the Clorox Company funded the pilot. That is a reported grant for this project, not a general cost estimate for beach-cleaning robots.

Why remote-controlled mowers are used on freeway slopes
WWJ reported on July 17, 2025, that five remote-controlled mowers were being used by the city’s landscaping contractor. The report said Detroit’s General Services Department is responsible for maintaining more than 240 miles of freeway landscaping. Contractor Terry Payne said operators walk behind the mowers using remote controls, rather than sitting on them. He described the safety rationale this way: “You could be safe 50 feet from it and you still can operate it.”
That is the contractor’s explanation for using the equipment around freeway slopes, not the result of a controlled study. The report does not establish comparative injury rates, labor savings or mowing productivity.
Food-scrap robots: from proposed routes to documented pilots
The Corktown pilot
Detroit’s Transportation Innovation Zone community engagement plan described a proposed autonomous food-waste pickup pilot. It said pickup locations and routes would be determined from signups and community feedback; the plan alone does not prove that every proposed route or service detail was implemented. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy later documented a four-week pilot launched in mid-June 2024 in the Transportation Innovation Zone. Scrap Soils and Orange Sparkle Ball used Ottonomy robots as part of Scrap Soils’ collection service. The robots delivered scraps to Brother Nature Produce’s urban farm, where Scrap Soils composted them. Scrap Soils founder and CEO Ricky Blanding told EGLE: “Scrap Soils and OSB had a growing partnership in terms of advisory support and goals for the community. OSB was working on autonomous mobility, and together, we conceptualized their first pilot: using robots to pick up food scraps as part of Scrap Soil’s collection service. We continued together, developing the formation of the project, along with the pilot design and funding strategy.”
Eastern Market pickups
A separate, newer effort uses Orange Sparkle Ball’s Penny Pickup platform to match a pickup with an appropriately sized electric vehicle, such as a sidewalk robot or cargo bike. Axios reported in January 2026 that founder Meaghan Kennedy said the project had completed more than 40 pickups and estimated it had saved 600 pounds of emissions. The emissions number is the company’s estimate, not an independent measurement reported by Axios.
At the time of that report, expansion to cardboard and a test of an autonomous pallet mover were plans, not completed results.

What “autonomous” does—and does not—mean here
The term can describe systems with very different levels of human control. The beach sifter and freeway mowers were described as remote-controlled. The food-scrap work involved delivery robots as part of a service with collection and dispatch partners. The sources do not establish that these machines operated without human oversight in every situation.
Detroit’s passenger shuttle, The Connect, is a different category. The city announced the pilot’s return in July 2025 after upgrades, with trained safety operators remaining present as autonomous service was introduced. It carries passengers; it is not evidence of robotic garbage collection or grounds maintenance. City announcement.

Detroit’s Department of Public Works announced two fully electric solid-waste collection trucks and a bus-stop recycling pilot in September 2025. The recycling effort covered 42 locations across the city’s seven council districts. These are relevant to waste and cleanliness, but they are not examples of robots doing the work. City announcement.

Michigan also announced a Corktown Kiwibot sidewalk-delivery pilot in 2021, with up to five robots and a human supervisor. It illustrates Detroit’s earlier mobility experimentation, but it was a delivery pilot, not one of the cleanup services. Michigan announcement.
Are robots clearing snow or charging shuttle buses?
A July 2025 Futurism summary of Crain’s Detroit reporting mentioned snow removal and on-demand shuttle charging among other robot tasks in the city. The available reporting does not establish a named machine, operator, date, location or primary-source confirmation for either example. Those claims are therefore less specific and less firmly documented than the Belle Isle, freeway-mowing and food-scrap cases.
Quick Recap
What the reports do not establish
- Whether every deployment is still active: the cited reports document announcements, pilots and dated activity from 2024 through 2026, not a current operating roster.
- Which system is best: the sources do not provide a shared, independent measure of cost, productivity, emissions or safety across these very different tasks.
- That robots replace workers: the examples describe machines used within contractor or partner-run services; they do not establish workforce impacts.
- That all of the machines are fully autonomous: the mower and BeBot examples are explicitly remote-controlled, while other projects involve different operating arrangements.
