Desolate Planet Modpack: Crash Landing Remake Server Guide (Minecraft 1.20.1)

Install and host Desolate Planet with the correct Forge version, RAM, server pack, multiplayer method and hardcore configuration guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desolate Planet runs on Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. Install the pack through the CurseForge or Modrinth app, allocate 6–8 GB of launcher memory, and keep every player on the same release. For a persistent multiplayer world, download the matching server pack from the current CurseForge release’s Additional Files section, then launch its run.bat (Windows) or run.sh (Linux/macOS).

The current CurseForge listing identifies Desolate Planet-1.8.6.0 as the latest release, dated June 17, 2026. This guide explains installation, RAM planning, temporary and dedicated multiplayer, hosting choices, hardcore settings, and the fixes for the most common startup failures.

What Desolate Planet is and what you need

Desolate Planet – A Crash Landing Remake is a hardcore, quest-driven survival pack inspired by Crash Landing by Iskandar. Its setting is Planet T4L0S in the Varkin system, where a crash leaves players in an arid environment with elevated radiation, high mineral content and subterranean hydrocarbons. Progress depends on managing heat, thirst and food while researching technology, securing scarce resources and eventually finding a way to escape.

The pack is a Java Edition project, not a Bedrock add-on. The supported game and loader combination is Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. Modrinth marks the project as available for both client and server, while the current CurseForge project listing names version 1.8.6.0 as the latest release (June 17, 2026).

Compatibility checklist

  • Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1
  • Forge for 1.20.1, installed by the launcher or supplied server pack
  • The identical Desolate Planet release on every client and on the server
  • At least 6 GB allocated to the client; 8 GB is the project’s preferred setting when the computer has enough memory
  • A 64-bit Java installation suitable for your Forge setup; a commercial hosting profile for this pack specifies Java 17

Do not mix a Bedrock installation, a different Minecraft version, or a different Desolate Planet release with a 1.20.1 Forge instance. Version mismatches are a common cause of rejected connections and startup errors.

Install Desolate Planet on a client

CurseForge or Modrinth app

  1. Install the CurseForge app or Modrinth app for Minecraft Java Edition.
  2. Open the app’s Minecraft section and search for the exact project name, Desolate Planet.
  3. Select the pack whose description identifies it as the Crash Landing remake and choose Install.
  4. Open the installed profile’s settings and assign 6–8 GB of RAM. Use 8 GB if your system can spare it without starving the operating system and other applications.
  5. Launch the profile once. Let Forge finish its first-start work before adding worlds or attempting multiplayer.

The project FAQ specifically says to allocate at least 6 GB and usually recommends 8 GB. If loading appears to stall, check the profile’s memory allocation before removing mods or changing configuration files. A stalled first launch is often a memory setting rather than a damaged pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where the installed profile lives

Both launchers manage a separate instance for the pack. Use the profile’s Open Folder or equivalent option when you need to inspect logs or configuration. Avoid copying an ordinary client folder to a server: the official server procedure uses a separate server-pack archive.

Prepare the first world safely

Let the pack reach its title screen and create a test world before inviting friends. This confirms that Forge has generated the instance files and gives you a disposable place to check heat, thirst, food and quest screens. Keep the test world separate from the group’s long-term save. Once the dedicated world is working, record its exact release number and keep a backup copy before making configuration edits or accepting a pack update.

Download and run the dedicated server pack

A dedicated server is the right choice when the world should remain available while the original host is offline. The official distribution supplies a server archive that matches the client release.

Get the matching archive

  1. Open the Desolate Planet project on CurseForge and select the current release, Desolate Planet-1.8.6.0 (listed June 17, 2026).
  2. Open Additional Files for that release.
  3. Download the file named Desolate Planet Server Pack Curseforge.zip.
  4. Create a new, empty server directory and unzip the archive into it. Keep the directory separate from your launcher’s client instance.

The server archive is release-specific. If you choose an older server pack, every client must use that same older release; mixing archives and profiles is not supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start it locally

  1. On Windows, run run.bat from the extracted server directory.
  2. On Linux or macOS, run run.sh from that directory using the normal shell method for your system.
  3. Allow the Forge server files to initialize completely. Keep the terminal or command window available so you can read startup errors.
  4. Give your players the address and connection details appropriate to your network. They must launch the same Desolate Planet version through Java Edition and Forge.

If your operating system blocks a script, use its normal permission or security controls rather than replacing the server files with a client installation. The supplied scripts are the pack’s intended launch path.

Use a hosting provider

For managed hosting, upload the contents of the server-pack archive, then follow the provider’s Forge setup instructions. Confirm that the host profile uses Minecraft 1.20.1, the matching Forge build and the same Desolate Planet release. Host control panels vary, so the panel’s Java and memory labels may differ from the local script names.

Server administration essentials

Keep the extracted server directory organized and do not delete files simply because their names are unfamiliar. The server pack contains the Forge and mod configuration needed to reproduce the client environment. Before changing a gamerule, replacing a modpack release or moving the world, stop the process cleanly and copy the complete world directory. A dated backup lets you roll back a failed update without sacrificing progress.

For a small private group, decide who owns the machine, who can restart it and who keeps backups. Self-hosting has no recurring provider fee, but it uses your hardware, electricity, storage and internet connection. A hosted plan trades those responsibilities for a recurring charge and whatever limits, backup tools and file access the provider includes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much RAM does Desolate Planet need?

There are two different sizing questions: memory for the player’s client and memory for a server process. The project’s official figure applies to the launcher; a provider’s server figures are estimates for its own environment, not hard requirements from the pack author.

Use case Memory guidance Qualification
Client profile 6 GB minimum guidance; 8 GB preferred Desolate Planet project FAQ, 2026 page snapshot
Small dedicated group 6 GB Commercial hosting estimate for this pack, not an official requirement
Five to ten players 8 GB Same provider estimate; actual load depends on world activity and host hardware
Java runtime on the cited host profile Java 17 Provider-specific recommendation; verify the version in your own panel

Allocating more memory than the process can use does not automatically improve performance. Leave enough RAM for the operating system, the launcher and background applications. If a client with 6 GB still fails to load, close other heavy programs and verify that the launcher is editing the Desolate Planet profile rather than a different Minecraft instance.

Server memory is affected by exploration, chunk activity and the number of players online, so treat the 6 GB and 8 GB figures as starting points. Watch the host’s memory and CPU indicators during a busy session. If the machine begins swapping or the server tick rate falls, reduce competing workloads or move to a plan with more headroom instead of blindly assigning all available RAM.

Choose a multiplayer method

Method Persistence when owner is offline Setup effort File and update control Backup responsibility Recurring cost
Open a single-player world to LAN with e4mc No; the owner’s game must remain open Lowest Controlled by the host’s client profile Host manages the world No server fee stated
Self-hosted dedicated server Yes, while the machine and process are running Moderate to high Full access to server files and updates Administrator manages backups No provider fee, but uses your hardware and connection
Managed hosting Yes, subject to the provider plan Lower administration after setup Panel and plan determine access Check what the host automates and what you must download Recurring plan cost; pricing varies

Temporary play with e4mc

The pack includes e4mc. Start Desolate Planet in single-player, open the world to LAN, and e4mc prints a join address in chat. Give that address to friends using the same pack version. This is convenient for a short session, but the world stops being reachable when the host closes the game or loses the connection.

Minecraft Dungeons: Standard Edition – Windows 10 [Digital Code]
  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

LAN play is useful for testing a new profile or playing an occasional cooperative session. It does not provide an always-on world, independent restart controls or a separate server backup routine. The host should still copy the world periodically because the save remains in the client instance.

Persistent play with a dedicated server

Use the server-pack procedure when players need to join independently of the host’s local game. The server process owns the world, so it can continue running on a spare computer or hosted machine. You retain direct control over files, configuration and update timing when self-hosting.

Managed hosting

Managed hosting removes much of the operating-system and network administration, but the provider’s memory, Java and Forge choices still matter. One commercial page recommends Java 17 and 6 GB for a small group, 8 GB for five to ten players, and documents a seven-day 8 GB trial alongside paid tiers. Those figures and offers belong to that provider’s 2026 page snapshot; verify current availability, renewal pricing and backup terms before ordering.

Ask a host whether its plan allows custom Forge modpacks, direct file uploads, scheduled restarts and downloadable world backups. Confirm whether the advertised RAM is dedicated to your server and whether the trial converts automatically to a paid tier. Pricing is provider-specific; there is no universal Desolate Planet server price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep clients and server in lockstep

Every participant should select the same Desolate Planet release shown in the server’s files. A server on 1.8.6.0 should be joined by clients on 1.8.6.0, not merely clients that share Minecraft 1.20.1. When an update is planned, stop the server, make a world backup, update the server pack and then update each launcher profile to the same release.

  • Record the exact pack version before opening the server to friends.
  • Do not replace the server directory with a newer client instance.
  • After an update, test with one client before inviting the whole group.
  • Keep a recoverable copy of the world before any pack update or configuration edit.

If a player receives a “missing mods” or incompatible-version message, compare the profile’s displayed pack version first. Reinstalling Forge alone will not correct a mismatched Desolate Planet release. Likewise, changing only the client’s configuration cannot override rules stored on a dedicated server.

Hardcore mode, extra lives and debuffs

Hardcore is part of Desolate Planet’s intended balance. The official FAQ recommends learning to use Sync shells for extra lives rather than treating death as a reason to remove the mode. Understanding heat, thirst, food and technology progression is therefore part of normal play, not optional flavor text.

Can you disable hardcore?

Yes, but it is a configuration change and should be treated as a world-affecting edit. Back up the target files and the world first. The project FAQ identifies config/globalgamerules-common.toml as the configuration file to edit. Server-side and client-side changes differ, so apply the change in the environment that controls your game and follow the file’s existing setting names and comments rather than inventing a new key. Stop the game or server before editing, save the file, then restart and test with a copy of the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing hardcore can alter the challenge that quests and progression assume. If friends connect to a dedicated server, the server’s configuration is the authoritative one; a client-only edit will not rewrite the server’s rules.

Weakness, mining fatigue and hunger

The project FAQ attributes weakness, mining fatigue and hunger debuffs to malnourishment. Treat those effects as a survival-system warning: check the character’s food status and nutritional progression before diagnosing a mod conflict. If the symptoms persist after addressing malnourishment, reproduce the issue on a clean, version-matched profile and inspect the server or client log for a specific error.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The pack never finishes loading

  1. Confirm that the profile is Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge.
  2. Set the profile to at least 6 GB, with 8 GB preferred when available.
  3. Close other memory-intensive applications and launch the profile again.
  4. Do not remove mods or overwrite configuration files until memory and version checks are complete.

Friends cannot connect

  • Check that everyone uses the same Desolate Planet release and Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile.
  • For e4mc, make sure the host actually opened the world to LAN and shared the address printed in chat.
  • For a dedicated server, confirm that the server process is running from the extracted server-pack directory rather than a client folder.
  • On a hosted instance, compare the panel’s Java, Forge and memory settings with the pack profile.

The server starts and then stops

Recheck the archive and launch script first. A dedicated installation should come from the release’s Additional Files server pack. If the server was assembled by copying a launcher instance, replace it with a clean extraction of Desolate Planet Server Pack Curseforge.zip for the chosen release. Then verify the host’s Java and Forge selections and read the terminal output for the first error, not only the final shutdown line.

Hardcore settings do not change

Stop the relevant game or server, restore the backup if necessary, and verify that you edited config/globalgamerules-common.toml in the instance that actually controls the world. A client-side file will not override a dedicated server’s rules. Make one change at a time and test on a copied world.

Performance degrades as more players join

Use the sizing figures as a starting point rather than a guarantee: a provider estimates 6 GB for a small group and 8 GB for five to ten players. If the world becomes unstable, check available CPU and memory headroom, reduce competing workloads on a self-hosted machine, and ask a managed host whether the selected plan has sufficient resources. Do not assume that the client’s 8 GB allocation is the correct server allocation.

A practical launch checklist

  1. Install Java Edition 1.20.1 and select the Forge-based Desolate Planet profile.
  2. Install the exact release you intend to play; the current listing is 1.8.6.0, dated June 17, 2026.
  3. Allocate 6–8 GB to each client profile.
  4. Choose e4mc for a temporary session, or download the matching server pack for persistent play.
  5. For a server, extract the archive and use run.bat on Windows or run.sh on Linux/macOS.
  6. Set the host’s Java and memory options, noting that one provider profile specifies Java 17.
  7. Give every player the same pack release and Forge/Minecraft combination.
  8. Back up the world before changing hardcore configuration or updating the pack.
  9. Use Sync shells and the pack’s food systems as designed before changing hardcore rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install Desolate Planet?

Install the CurseForge or Modrinth app for Minecraft Java Edition, search for the exact Desolate Planet project, install the Crash Landing remake profile and allocate 6–8 GB of RAM. Launch it once before adding a world or joining friends.

What Minecraft version and loader does it use?

Desolate Planet supports Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. It is not a Bedrock pack, and every client and server must use the same pack release as well as the same Minecraft and Forge combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I download the server pack?

Open the current CurseForge release, choose Additional Files and download “Desolate Planet Server Pack Curseforge.zip.” For the listed 1.8.6.0 release, the matching server-pack date is June 17, 2026.

How much RAM should I allocate?

The project FAQ gives 6 GB as minimum client guidance and usually recommends 8 GB. A hosting provider estimates 6 GB for a small group and 8 GB for five to ten players; those server figures depend on hardware and are not universal requirements.

Can friends join my single-player world?

Yes. The pack includes e4mc: open the world to LAN and share the address it prints in chat. The host’s game must remain open, so use a dedicated server for a persistent world.

Which files start a dedicated server?

Extract the matching server archive into an empty directory. Run run.bat on Windows or run.sh on Linux or macOS, and keep the terminal open while Forge initializes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I disable hardcore?

Yes, but back up the world and configuration first. The relevant file is config/globalgamerules-common.toml. Stop the game or server before editing, and remember that a dedicated server’s settings override client-only changes.

What causes weakness, mining fatigue or hunger effects?

The project FAQ attributes those debuffs to malnourishment. Check food status and nutritional progression before treating the symptoms as a mod conflict.

Is managed hosting required?

No. You can use e4mc for temporary play or run the supplied dedicated server pack on your own machine. Managed hosting costs a recurring fee but reduces operating-system and network administration; compare Java, Forge, RAM, backups and renewal terms.

What should I back up before an update?

Stop the game or server and copy the world plus relevant configuration files before changing hardcore settings, replacing the pack or updating the server. Test an update with one client before inviting the whole group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the current Desolate Planet 1.8.6.0 release, use Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge, allocate 6–8 GB to clients, and keep every player on the identical pack version. Use e4mc for a temporary LAN session; for persistent multiplayer, extract the matching CurseForge server pack and run its supplied script. Back up the world before updates or hardcore edits, and treat hosting RAM estimates as starting points rather than guarantees.
