Designing Software That Runs for Ten Years: Architecture Lessons from Production

Zhonglian Network’s production account highlights practical ways to build software that remains maintainable and operable over many years.

What makes a system keep running for a decade without its core having to be rebuilt? Zhonglian Network’s practitioner account points to deliberate choices around data, retries, tenant boundaries and operations—not a single framework or architecture. Its examples are useful design guidance, but the company’s reported results do not prove that any one choice caused its longevity or scale.

Why long-lived systems need durable data choices

Zhonglian Network’s central thesis is that “the database schema is the real API.” That is a design provocation, not a literal replacement for application interfaces: schemas and stored records become contracts because applications, reports and operational processes can depend on them for years. Changing those contracts safely requires more care than changing an isolated implementation detail.

Make important facts explicit

The company recommends explicit columns and database constraints rather than relying on application code alone to keep records valid. Constraints can make invalid states harder to store, while clearly named fields make the data’s meaning easier to inspect and evolve. It also argues against using an entity-attribute-value model as a default for core business data; that judgment reflects its experience, not a universal prohibition on flexible schemas.

Preserve identity and history

Stable surrogate identifiers can keep a record’s identity separate from business attributes that may change. Auditability matters for the same reason: when a value changes, operators may need to establish what changed and when, not merely read the current state. The appropriate audit detail depends on the system’s legal, security and business requirements.

Represent money deliberately

Zhonglian’s guidance is to make monetary representation an explicit design decision. A payment or balance should not depend on ambiguous numeric interpretation: define units and precision, and ensure the application and database agree about rounding and currency. The source presents this as experience-based advice rather than a detailed implementation specification.

Design retry behavior before consequential writes

Retries are routine in distributed systems: a client may not receive a response even when the server completed the operation. If it repeats a consequential write without safeguards, the result can be a duplicate charge or other repeated effect. Zhonglian’s account says its point-of-sale gateway deduplicates repeated payment messages and reconciles ledger results. Its general lesson is: “for anything involving money, design the retry path before the happy path.”

Stripe’s API documentation describes idempotency keys as a way to safely retry requests without accidentally performing the same operation twice: Stripe: Idempotent requests. The key lets an API recognize a retry as associated with an earlier request, but idempotency is an application-level property, not a blanket guarantee of exactly-once execution across a distributed system.

Implementations need to define how long keys are retained, how a repeated key is matched to the original request, and what happens when the same key is reused with different parameters. Those details determine whether a retry is safe in the failure cases the system actually faces. Reconciliation remains important: compare the application’s expected outcome with authoritative ledger or payment-provider results instead of assuming a timeout means the operation failed.

Choose tenant isolation as a security boundary

A multi-tenant application must prevent one tenant from reading or changing another tenant’s data. Zhonglian’s example uses a shared schema with a tenant_id on tenant-owned records. That approach can simplify migrations and cross-tenant reporting, but every relevant access path must preserve the tenant boundary; a missed predicate can expose data.

The alternative is a separate database for each tenant. This can improve isolation and give more tenant-specific restore options, while increasing migration and operational work as the number of tenants grows. Neither model is universally best. A decision should account for isolation requirements, migration burden, backup and restore costs, reporting needs, query patterns, and the team’s ability to test access boundaries.

Approach Potential advantages Important costs or risks
Shared schema with tenant_id One migration path; simpler cross-tenant reporting. A missing tenant filter can expose data; isolation depends on consistent enforcement.
Database per tenant Stronger per-tenant separation and tenant-specific restore options. More migration and operations work as tenant count grows.

PostgreSQL row-level security can add database-enforced row access policies: PostgreSQL: Row Security Policies. It is a control to configure and test carefully, not an automatic cure for application mistakes. Table owners and privileged roles can bypass policies unless the deployment is configured appropriately, so assess which roles run application queries and verify behavior with tests that exercise both permitted and forbidden access.

Scale around measured access patterns and operational needs

For its education-platform example, Zhonglian says it used bounded or keyset pagination, object storage for files, reporting replicas, and time partitioning. These choices address different pressures: pagination can avoid repeatedly scanning an ever-growing result set; object storage keeps file payloads out of ordinary relational records; replicas can separate reporting work from interactive traffic; and time partitioning can help organize time-based data.

These are not automatic performance wins. Their value depends on actual query and workload patterns, and the account publishes no benchmarks showing that these changes caused a particular scale outcome. Measure where time and resources go, then choose the intervention that addresses the bottleneck. A replica also introduces operational questions about data freshness, while partitioning and pagination require query and retention designs that fit the workload.

Use monitoring to learn how the system behaves

Durability is not just an architecture property; it also depends on noticing failures and understanding how behavior changes over time. Google’s SRE guidance describes monitoring as a means to track long-term trends, alert on problems, provide dashboards and support retrospective debugging: Google SRE: Monitoring Distributed Systems.

For systems with consequential writes, monitoring should complement reconciliation. Alerts can surface problems that need immediate attention; dashboards and historical trends can reveal gradual changes; retrospective debugging helps explain an incident after the fact. The signals to collect should reflect the system’s risks—for example, whether operations are failing, slowing down or producing results that need reconciliation.

What Zhonglian’s production figures establish—and what they do not

In an article dated September 29, 2026, Zhonglian Network reports that its procurement platform has served more than 140 schools and has been in production for over 10 years. It also reports that its education platform serves more than 100 institutions and over 1 million end users, with roughly 15 TB of data. These are company-reported figures, not independently verified measurements. They show what the company says its platforms have handled; they do not isolate the effect of the design choices described or establish that those choices alone produced the reported outcomes.

The article’s “14 years” framing should likewise be read as the publisher’s claim: it says the company has operated since 2012, but the complete duration claim is not independently substantiated here. The most defensible takeaway is therefore practical rather than causal: long-lived systems benefit when teams treat stored data as a durable contract, make retries safe for consequential operations, enforce tenant boundaries and operate with enough visibility to diagnose change.
