Designing a Procedural, Tetris-Tiled Homelab Dashboard with a Zero-Dependency Backend

A practical design for a homelab dashboard: model tiles as data, choose auto-flow or free placement, and keep backend scope intentional.

Build the dashboard around serializable tile records, a deliberately narrow monitoring scope, and explicit rules for placement and persistence. “Zero-dependency backend” can mean anything from no external services to no runtime packages, so define that boundary before choosing how to store layouts or collect service status. A grid-layout library can still be an option if zero dependencies applies only to the backend.

Start by defining what “zero-dependency backend” means

The phrase does not specify a runtime, storage model, or whether build-time packages count. Write down the constraint before designing the system:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • No external services: the dashboard must run without hosted APIs or managed databases.
  • No runtime packages: the backend must use only the runtime’s built-in capabilities.
  • No database: state must live somewhere else, such as a file or the browser.
  • No build-time dependencies: even frontend tooling and libraries are out of scope.

These are different requirements. For example, a browser-side layout library does not violate a backend-only restriction, but it does violate a project-wide ban on dependencies. State which interpretation the design supports.

Choose the dashboard’s job before designing its tiles

A service launcher with basic status has a smaller data and operational scope than a monitoring system with history, logs, metrics, and alerts. Existing projects illustrate the distinction: Homepad describes a service catalog with UP, DEGRADED, DOWN, or UNKNOWN badges, favorites, and tile ordering. MangoRack describes checks including HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, ping, DNS, and custom services, along with uptime tracking, logs, CPU, memory and disk metrics, and alerting.

For a minimal first version, define a catalog and a health indicator. Add history, metrics, logs, or alerts only when you have a clear use case and a source for that data. MangoRack’s documented Next.js 14, PostgreSQL, and Redis stack is an example of a broader product, not a requirement for this design.

Represent each tile as data

Keep layout state separate from the tile’s content. A tile record needs a stable identity, a content type, position and size, and any tile-specific configuration. For example, a conceptual record might contain:

{"id":"nas","type":"service-status","x":0,"y":0,"w":2,"h":1,"config":{"label":"NAS"}}

The exact field names and coordinate units are yours to define. The key design benefit is that a layout becomes serializable: it can be loaded, checked, saved, and rendered without treating the visible page as the only source of truth.

GridStack’s README documents serialized widget records with position and size fields and a load operation for restoring them. It describes the TypeScript library as having no external dependencies. That makes it a possible frontend option for layout interaction, not a zero-dependency backend. See the GridStack project README and its project site. The site describes draggable, resizable, responsive column-based layouts and save/restore; confirm the release documentation for the version you actually select rather than relying on a version string shown in a search result.

Decide how tiles behave when they are placed

“Tetris-tiled” can describe different interactions. Two common approaches are automatic packing and explicit placement:

Approach Placement behavior What to decide
Auto-flow Tiles pack into available grid positions as the layout is arranged. Whether preserving a particular tile position matters when other tiles are added, removed, or resized.
Free placement Tiles retain explicit positions selected by the user or layout configuration. How to handle collisions, empty space, resizing, and narrow viewports.

Selfstack describes both auto-flow grid and free-placement modes, with responsive fixed-size tiles. This is an example of the design choice, not evidence that either mode is universally better.

Specify the layout rules

  • Define the grid’s coordinate system and permitted tile dimensions.
  • Choose whether a moved tile pushes others, swaps positions, or is rejected when a placement conflicts.
  • Define what deleting or resizing a tile does to the remaining layout.
  • Decide whether narrow viewports reflow one shared layout or use separately saved arrangements.
  • Make the rules consistent between interactive edits and any layout loaded from storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Validate changes and choose where state lives

Before accepting a changed layout, validate that each tile has an identity, valid position and size, and coordinates inside the allowed grid. Check for overlapping tiles if the chosen layout mode prohibits overlap. Apply the same checks when loading saved data as when processing a user edit.

Persistence is a separate decision; the available project examples do not establish a best storage option for an unspecified deployment. Choose based on who needs access and how the owner expects to recover:

Its ultra-compact footprint easily replaces bulky traditional computer towers, pre-installed with a clean system.
  • Browser storage: suitable when layouts are local to one browser and do not need shared access.
  • A flat file: can fit a single-instance setup, but requires a deliberate backup and write strategy.
  • A database: may fit multi-user or more complex state needs, but adds an operational dependency if it is not already part of the environment.

State what is persisted—layout only, tile configuration, or both—and how an invalid or missing saved layout is handled. Do not assume that the choice of a grid library also solves backend persistence.

Define the status-data contract and trust boundaries

Decide whether the dashboard performs service checks itself, reads status from an existing monitoring system, or displays status supplied by an administrator. Specify the check timeout, how stale results appear, and what authentication is required before adding probes or controls. Those choices determine whether the backend remains small and what network access it needs.

Also decide how the dashboard is exposed on the network, who may see service names, and whether tile content can contain untrusted HTML. These are design requirements to settle for the deployment; the cited project descriptions do not establish a particular secure configuration.

Build in a deliberate order

  1. Set the constraint: document what “zero-dependency” excludes and which runtime the backend supports.
  2. Limit the first release: begin with a service catalog and status display unless monitoring history or alerting is a concrete need.
  3. Define the tile schema: choose stable IDs, content types, coordinates, dimensions, and configuration fields.
  4. Select placement behavior: decide between auto-flow and explicit placement, then specify collision and responsive rules.
  5. Validate and persist: check layouts on edits and loads, then select storage based on backup and sharing requirements.
  6. Set the data and access rules: define status sources, stale-data behavior, authentication, network exposure, and treatment of tile content.
