You can turn a Canva email design into HTML, but exporting it is only the handoff: you still need to import or send it through a compatible platform, add the platform’s campaign fields, and test how it looks in real inboxes. Canva says it can provide copied HTML or an HTML download with linked assets, but “Canva doesn’t send emails directly.”
Choose how you’ll send the email
Pick the destination before designing. A message for a few people can go through Gmail; an email service provider (ESP) is a better fit for mailing lists, campaign management, and automation. Canva says Gmail is not built for bulk or automated campaigns. Its documented options include sending through Gmail, importing HTML into a compatible ESP, or publishing directly to Mailchimp.

| Route | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail | A one-off or small-group message | Send a test and check layout in Gmail. Canva warns that Gmail strips media queries and some advanced email styles. |
| ESP HTML import | Campaigns that need list management or automation | The ESP must support custom HTML. Upload the HTML and assets as required, then add or verify merge tags and unsubscribe handling. |
| Canva’s Mailchimp integration | Publishing a Canva email directly to a connected Mailchimp account | Canva documents one email page per publish, a design size below 100KB, and regional availability that excludes China. |

Use Canva Email for a layout intended to be sent as an email. You can build with text, images, buttons, columns, headers, footers, and icon blocks. Preview the design in Canva and use its test-email option where available, but treat that as an early check—not proof of how every inbox will render it. Email clients process HTML and CSS differently.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep important information and calls to action clear in the reading order, including if columns do not stack as expected.
- Use email-safe fonts and native email components where possible; support for fonts and styles varies by client.
- Remember that embedded charts, sheets, embeds, and some design elements may export as images. They will not remain interactive or update from their source data.
- Canva says video converts to GIF on export or send. GIFs have no sound, may be larger than a static image, and generally cannot be played as video directly in email clients.
Export Canva’s HTML
For a general ESP workflow, Canva documents downloading a ZIP that contains the HTML and images. The linked image assets matter: if the destination platform expects them separately, import or upload them along with the HTML rather than treating the HTML file as a self-contained design.
- In Canva, open the finished email and use the available HTML download or copy-HTML option.
- For the ZIP workflow, download the package containing the HTML and image assets.
- In your destination ESP, look for an option such as Import HTML, Code Your Own, or Custom HTML. Names and availability vary by platform.
- Upload the HTML and assets as that platform requires, then inspect the imported campaign before adding recipients or scheduling it.
Many ESPs do not allow drag-and-drop editing after an HTML import. If the design needs visual changes, revise it in Canva and export again. Edit raw HTML only if you are comfortable coding and the ESP allows it.

Publish directly to Mailchimp
Canva also documents a direct publishing route to Mailchimp. In Canva, use Share > Mailchimp and follow the connection and publishing prompts. Canva’s help page describes the output as an email-doctype page published as Email (HTML).

Canva says compliance links in the design are converted into Mailchimp merge tags. Account connection, product access, regional availability, and publishing limits can change, so check the current in-product options if the integration is missing or publishing fails.

Complete merge tags and unsubscribe handling in the ESP
For a general HTML import, Canva says, “Canva does not yet support ESP-specific merge tags.” Merge tags personalize content with platform data, such as a recipient’s name. Canva also warns that unsubscribe links and merge tags shown in a design may be placeholders. Add or replace them using the destination ESP’s controls, then verify that they work in the final campaign.
Canva’s documentation notes that an unsubscribe link is legally required under applicable email-compliance rules. Requirements depend on the rules that apply to your sending; make sure the platform’s unsubscribe mechanism is present and functioning before sending.
Send a test and check real inboxes
Importing successfully does not guarantee that the message will look right everywhere. Send a test through the actual destination platform and inspect it in the inboxes and on the devices relevant to your audience. Check:
- Text, images, fonts, and overall spacing
- Buttons and every important link
- Column behavior and mobile layout
- Personalization fields, sender details, and footer or unsubscribe links
Canva recommends test sends. Do not rely on the Canva editor preview alone as evidence of inbox rendering.

Why does my Canva email look different in Gmail?
Canva says Gmail strips out media queries and some Outlook-specific optimizations. Media queries can control how a layout changes on smaller screens, so a multi-column email may not stack the way it appeared in Canva. If the Gmail test is difficult to read on mobile, simplify the layout in Canva—such as by reducing reliance on side-by-side columns—and export and test again.
Fonts or other styles can also change because email-client support differs. Check the delivered test rather than assuming the editor’s appearance will carry over. If a chart or embedded item looks static, it may have exported as an image; if video appears as an animation, Canva says it converts to GIF for email.
Quick Recap
When the import or publish does not work
- The ESP has no HTML import option: The platform may not support custom HTML on your account or plan. Check its available campaign options; Canva’s ZIP workflow requires a destination that supports custom HTML.
- The images are missing: Confirm that you uploaded or imported the image assets from Canva’s ZIP as well as the HTML, following the ESP’s process.
- You can’t edit the imported design visually: Canva notes that many ESPs do not offer drag-and-drop editing after HTML import. Change the design in Canva and export again, or edit the code if you can do so safely.
- Mailchimp publishing is unavailable or fails: Check that the account is connected, the design is below 100KB, and you are publishing one page at a time. The Canva documentation also excludes China from availability.
- The email looks wrong on a phone: Inspect a real mobile test in the affected inbox. Simplify columns and styling if the client does not display them as intended.
