Check eligibility, licensing, release health and update-ring settings first; use Intune’s feature-update reports to track deployment rather than assuming devices install as soon as they become eligible.
Check readiness before assigning the policy
Confirm these conditions for the devices and users in scope before scheduling deployment:

- Enrollment and join state: Devices must be enrolled in Intune and Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined.
- Connectivity: Devices need access to the required Intune and Windows Update service endpoints. See Microsoft’s Windows Update management overview for the management model and prerequisites.
- Licensing: Verify the tenant and target population have the Windows licensing and Windows Autopatch entitlement required for feature-update policies. Optional availability also requires a Windows Autopatch license. Check the organization’s actual entitlements before deployment.
- Release health: Review Microsoft’s live Windows 11, version 26H2 known issues and notifications for availability, known issues and holds relevant to your hardware, applications or configuration. The page reported general availability as of September 29, 2026, but rollout is phased and eligibility depends on the device.
A safeguard hold can prevent a device from installing the targeted version, even when its Intune policy is configured correctly. Do not treat the policy assignment as an override for a hold.

Create a Windows feature-update policy for 26H2
- In the Intune admin center, go to Devices > Windows > Windows updates > Feature updates.
- Select Create profile, give the deployment a recognizable name, and select Windows 11, version 26H2 as the target version.
- Choose whether the deployment is required or optional. Required updates install automatically according to device settings. With an optional deployment, eligible users must choose to download and install the update; communicate that action to them.
- Configure availability and any rollout options, then assign the policy to the intended device groups. Review the settings before creating the policy.
Microsoft’s guide to configuring Windows feature-update policies documents policy setup and behavior. Each policy targets one Windows version. A feature-update policy does not downgrade devices: a device already on a newer version stays there. The latest applicable monthly quality update is included with a feature update, and the policy remains in effect until changed or removed.

Choose when and how devices are offered the update
Availability controls when a device becomes eligible to install after a subsequent Windows Update scan. It is not a guarantee that every device installs at that exact time. User action, deadlines, restart settings and device behavior affect completion.
- Immediate availability: Use when eligible devices should be offered the update without a future scheduled start. This does not mean all devices install immediately.
- Scheduled availability: Set a future date when devices should become eligible. This gives administrators time to communicate and prepare support.
- Gradual availability: Stage offers to rollout groups rather than exposing the entire target population at once. See Microsoft’s rollout options for feature-update policies.
For risk containment, use device-group assignments that move from a limited initial cohort to wider groups after monitoring early deployment. A single broad assignment is simpler, but gives less opportunity to detect issues before more devices are offered the update.

Coordinate the policy with update rings
Use the feature-update policy as the primary control for which Windows feature version devices can install. Avoid overlapping feature-update deferrals in update rings: applying both controls can add complexity and delay or block offers. Keep update rings for restart behavior and other user-experience settings.
If you are transitioning from update-ring feature-update deferrals, assign the feature-update policy first. Wait until targeted devices report OfferReady before removing those deferrals. When multiple feature-update policies apply, Windows Update offers only one feature update at a time and selects the latest applicable version.

Monitor deployment and interpret reporting delays
Use Intune’s Windows feature-update reports to review policy deployment state and investigate failures. Microsoft’s feature-update policy reporting documentation describes two different data paths:
- Service-based Windows Update data: Typically arrives in under an hour after an event.
- Client-based data: Requires configured data collection, is processed in batches and refreshes every eight hours.
These are reporting refresh timings, not installation deadlines. Allow for the relevant reporting delay before treating a device as stalled or a report as final.

Understand what 26H2 means for servicing
Microsoft describes Windows 11, version 26H2 as the next annual feature update. It shares a servicing foundation with versions 24H2 and 25H2; eligible devices can move to 26H2 with a small enablement package rather than a full operating-system upgrade.
