For an application, a committed lockfile or fully pinned environment gives more repeatable installs than version ranges alone. For a reusable Python package published to PyPI, version ranges in its metadata are usually the better choice for downstream compatibility. Neither approach is inherently safer from vulnerabilities: pins preserve a specific selection until it is changed, while ranges can resolve to different versions as dependencies evolve.
What pinning and version ranges actually control
A version range defines which releases a package manager may accept. In an npm package.json, for example, a dependency can use an exact version, comparison operators, tilde (~), caret (^) or a wildcard such as 1.2.x. These forms express an acceptable set, not necessarily the exact versions that will be installed on every later install. See npm’s package.json documentation.

Pinning with == in Python requires a particular version. But pinning only the direct dependencies does not necessarily determine every transitive dependency—the packages those direct dependencies rely on. A complete application environment needs a record of the full resolved set if repeatability is the goal. pip describes pins and exhaustive requirements files in its Repeatable Installs guide.

“Safer” depends on what risk you mean. A lockfile or exhaustive pinned environment helps reproduce a known dependency resolution; it does not show that the selected versions are secure or current. Conversely, a range gives a resolver flexibility, but it does not guarantee that every version it may select is safe.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- For repeatable application deployments: use acceptable ranges in the manifest where appropriate, then commit and install from the ecosystem’s resolved dependency record.
- For a published Python library: express compatibility in package metadata instead of exact-pinning every dependency. This avoids unnecessarily restricting the versions that consumers can use.
- For security: review dependency changes and assess relevant advisories, whether you use pins or ranges. Treat a pin as a version choice, not a security verdict.
Official documentation describes dependency and install behavior, not comparative vulnerability rates. There is no basis here for claiming that one strategy produces fewer vulnerabilities.
npm: use package.json for ranges and package-lock.json for the resolved tree
In npm, package.json declares dependency specifications, while package-lock.json records the resolved dependency tree. npm says the lockfile is intended for source control and allows later installs to reproduce the generated tree. The distinction matters: a range alone does not capture the full tree selected for a particular application install. See npm’s package-lock.json documentation.

Choose the install command for the workflow
npm installuses versions from the lockfile when they satisfy the ranges inpackage.json. If they do not, npm resolves versions that do and updates the lockfile.npm ciis for workflows that require the manifest and lockfile to stay strictly synchronized. Use it in automated or deployment workflows when you want installation to follow the committed lock rather than update it.
These behaviors are documented in the npm install documentation. If you intentionally change a manifest range, review the resulting lockfile change rather than assuming the old resolution remains valid.

A package published to PyPI and an application deployed from a controlled environment have different needs. The Python Packaging User Guide advises against using published install_requires metadata to pin exact versions or specify sub-dependencies: overly strict metadata can prevent package users from benefiting from compatible upgrades. Library metadata should describe the dependency compatibility the package supports, using dependency specifiers appropriate to its role. See the guide to install_requires versus requirements files and the specification for dependency specifiers.

An application owner has a different objective when building a repeatable environment. A requirements or locking workflow can record exact versions for both direct and transitive dependencies. pip notes that a requirements file generated with pip freeze can pin the complete installed set. That strategy also relies on the package locations and certificate-authority chain used to obtain those packages, so version pins alone do not establish the integrity or safety of a source. See pip’s Repeatable Installs guide.

Quick comparison
| Question | Exact pins in a manifest | Ranges plus a resolved environment record |
|---|---|---|
| What is specified? | A particular version for each dependency that is pinned. | An acceptable set in metadata, plus separately recorded resolved versions for an application environment. |
| Does it reproduce the full environment? | Not if only direct dependencies are pinned; transitive dependencies may still vary. | Yes, when the lockfile or requirements record includes the full resolved tree and the workflow installs from it. |
| Fit for published Python library metadata? | Often too restrictive for consumers, according to the Python Packaging User Guide. | Generally better suited to expressing supported compatibility. |
| How do updates happen? | Someone must deliberately change the pinned versions. | A committed lock does not refresh on every install; updates require a deliberate refresh and review. |
| Does it prove security? | No. A stable version may still need a security update. | No. A newly resolved version still requires review and security assessment. |
A practical choice by project type
npm application
- Declare acceptable dependency ranges in
package.json. - Commit
package-lock.jsonso the resolved tree is recorded with the application. - Use
npm ciin workflows that require strict synchronization with the committed manifest and lockfile. - When updating dependencies, review the lockfile changes and assess security advisories instead of treating successful installation as proof of safety.
Python library published to PyPI
- Set dependency metadata to describe supported compatibility rather than exact-pinning every dependency.
- Avoid listing transitive dependencies as direct requirements merely to freeze a consumer’s environment.
- Test the compatibility your package claims; consumers resolve dependencies within those constraints.
Python application
- Use package metadata or project configuration to declare the application’s dependencies and compatibility needs.
- Maintain an exhaustive requirements or locking record for the deployment environment when reproducibility matters.
- Install and update from that controlled record, and review version changes and package sources as part of the release process.
