Deno’s entire team is joining Cloudflare, according to announcements from both companies on October 9, 2026. The plan is to combine Deno’s celld project with Cloudflare’s workerd to make it easier to run applications built with the Workers programming model—including Durable Objects—on infrastructure developers manage themselves. The announcements do not disclose a purchase price or other financial terms, and they describe a team move rather than detailing an acquisition structure.

What is changing

Deno founder Ryan Dahl announced that the entire Deno team is joining Cloudflare. Deno says future development will focus on a shared platform rather than a separate Deno runtime and hosting service. In Cloudflare’s account, the joint effort will bring Deno’s self-hosting work together with workerd, Cloudflare’s open-source runtime for Workers.

The companies describe the aim as making Workers and Durable Objects easier to run beyond Cloudflare’s own network. Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder will lead the effort to make workerd self-hosting a first-class supported use case. The companies have not announced a release date or detailed compatibility guarantees.

The word “acquires” in the original headline is shorthand: the October 9 announcements say Deno’s team is joining Cloudflare, but do not state the transaction structure or financial terms. Deno founder Ryan Dahl wrote, “Today we’re announcing that the entire Deno team is joining Cloudflare.” Deno’s announcement and Cloudflare’s announcement set out the companies’ respective plans.

What are celld, workerd, and Workers?

These names refer to related but distinct parts of the effort. Cloudflare Workers is Cloudflare’s application platform. workerd is the runtime that implements the Workers programming model. Deno’s celld is a project designed around self-hosting that model. The plan is to combine celld’s code and ideas with workerd, not simply rename one product as another.

Deno describes celld as building on the Cloudflare Workers programming model. Cloudflare says it wanted an implementation of Workers and Durable Objects that could be self-hosted, but had not found time to build one. Kenton Varda, a Cloudflare Distinguished Engineer, and Ryan Dahl described the goal as making it possible for developers to “use the same primitives in more places.” This is a stated technical connection and collaboration, not an allegation of copying or a dispute between the companies.

What happens to Deno’s runtime and services?

Deno’s October 9 announcement gives the following transition commitments. It specifies intervals, not calendar shutdown dates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Project or service What Deno announced
Deno runtime Monthly bug-fix and security releases for another year; after that, Deno plans to end its own runtime development. The runtime will remain open source, and Deno welcomes community continuation.
Deno Deploy The service will continue operating for six months before shutdown. Deno says it will support paying customers moving to Cloudflare Workers.
JSR JSR will continue operating, and its infrastructure will move to Cloudflare.
rusty_v8 Deno says it will continue supporting the project and work toward integrating it into workerd.

Because the announcement gives only “another year” and “six months,” it does not establish exact end dates. Deno Deploy’s stated migration support applies to paying customers; the announcement does not spell out migration arrangements for every user or application.

Why the companies say self-hosting matters

Dahl says operating Deno Deploy revealed how much complexity can sit behind a simple developer experience, including multiple public clouds, databases, and interconnected services. Deno designed celld with self-hosting and a simpler operating model in mind. Cloudflare, meanwhile, says it wanted a self-hostable implementation of Workers and Durable Objects. Their stated plan is to bring that work into workerd so developers can use the same programming model in more places, rather than requiring every deployment to run on Cloudflare’s network.

For developers, the practical significance depends on what they need. The announcements describe a direction, not a currently available self-hosting release with documented requirements or compatibility guarantees. If you are choosing a hosting path now, distinguish that future work from Cloudflare Workers as it exists today, and account for Deno’s announced runtime and Deploy transition timelines.

What developers should take away

  • If you maintain an application on the Deno runtime, Deno says it will issue monthly bug-fix and security releases for another year, then stop its own runtime development. The runtime remains open source, but continued development after that point is not promised by Deno.
  • If you use Deno Deploy, the service is scheduled to operate for six months before shutdown. Paying customers are promised support moving to Cloudflare Workers; check Deno’s announcement for updates as the transition progresses.
  • If you use JSR, Deno says it will continue operating while its infrastructure moves to Cloudflare.
  • If you are interested in self-hosting Workers, the celld/workerd effort is intended to make that use case better supported. No delivery date or detailed compatibility commitment has been announced.
