Registered voters are more likely to say Democrats would do a better job handling the cost of living than Republicans, 38% to 27%, in a September 2026 AP-NORC poll. But that issue-specific edge does not amount to broad confidence: only 18% of adults said either party could solve important problems extremely or very well.
Which party do voters think is better on the cost of living?
In the nationwide poll, 38% of registered voters said Democrats would do a better job handling the cost of living, compared with 27% who chose Republicans. The result marks a shift from February 2026, when roughly three in ten adults chose each party on the issue. The populations differ, so the February adult result is useful context rather than a direct like-for-like comparison. The Associated Press reported the registered-voter figures.
The poll’s detailed topline reports a separate all-adult result: 35% chose Democrats, 24% Republicans, and 31% said neither party. That 31% is important context for the apparent Democratic advantage; many adults did not name either party as better. On the economy, 34% of adults chose Democrats, 27% Republicans, and 28% neither. On health care, the corresponding shares were 41%, 22%, and 27%. These figures come from the AP-NORC September 2026 topline.
The exact question asked respondents which party they trusted to do a better job handling a list of issues. It measured respondents’ expressed preference, not which party has in fact reduced costs or delivered more effective policies. The poll also found Democrats ahead on health care, transgender issues, foreign policy, and the economy; respondents were split on immigration and artificial intelligence. Those results are issue-by-issue judgments, not proof of general trust in Democrats.

Can either party solve the country’s problems?
Confidence is low for both parties. Just 18% of adults said Democrats could solve important problems extremely or very well, and the same share said so of Republicans. The cost-of-living lead therefore sits alongside broad skepticism about each party’s capacity to address major challenges.
The AP-NORC results also capture frustration in voters’ own words. Aaron Siever, a former police officer who guides Civil War battlefield tours, told the Associated Press: “There’s so much turmoil,” and, “There’s big problems and neither side seems able to fix them.” His comments illustrate one respondent’s view; they are not a separate measure of public opinion.

Do voters think either party cares about people like them?
Only 22% of adults said the description “focused on helping people like you” applied extremely or very well to Democrats; 17% said the same of Republicans. By contrast, 58% of registered voters said Republicans were focused on helping rich and powerful people, compared with 30% who said that of Democrats. These are responses to different descriptions and should not be treated as opposite ends of a single scale. The topline provides the wording and population breakdowns.
Views of the parties’ ideological positioning were also mixed. Among registered voters, 55% said the Republican Party was too extreme and 48% said the same of Democrats. Among Democratic voters, 46% described their own party as too moderate. These judgments show that dissatisfaction is not limited to one party’s opponents.

How respondents view the president’s handling of prices
In a question about President Trump’s handling of the cost of living, 69% said it had gone worse than expected, 7% better than expected, and 23% about as expected. Separately, when asked what higher-than-usual prices were more attributable to, 65% of adults pointed to President Trump’s policies and 33% to factors outside his control. These answers describe respondents’ assessments; they do not establish what caused price changes.

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research surveyed 2,140 U.S. adults from September 24–28, 2026, including 1,766 registered voters. The survey used NORC’s AmeriSpeak probability-based panel. Of the completed interviews, 2,093 were online and 47 by telephone; interviews were available in English and Spanish. AP reported a margin of sampling error of ±2.9 percentage points for all adults and ±3.1 points for registered voters. The methodology explains the sample and survey procedures.

- The margins are for the overall adult and registered-voter samples; uncertainty can be higher for subgroups.
- Sampling error is only one possible source of error. The methodology reports a weighted cumulative response rate of 4.4%, as well as a 17.0% weighted household panel recruitment rate and a 25.8% survey completion rate.
- The panel is designed to represent the U.S. household population. Its sampling frame covers approximately 97% of that population, with some address types excluded.
The poll is a snapshot of stated opinion during the September field period. It cannot explain why views shifted, establish that a party’s policies caused price changes, measure actual governing competence, or predict the November 3 midterm result. Its clearest finding is narrower: Democrats had an advantage over Republicans on cost of living, while large shares of voters chose neither party on issues and few adults expressed strong confidence in either party’s ability to solve important problems.
