Dell did not announce one “Base, Pro and Pro Max” laptop at CES 2025. On January 6, 2025, it introduced a new naming system spanning consumer, business and workstation computers. The broad translation is Dell for the former Inspiron range, Dell Pro for Latitude-class business systems and Dell Pro Max for Precision-style mobile workstations.
Each family is then divided into Base, Plus and Premium tiers. That creates a matrix, not a simple performance ladder: a Pro Max Base is still a professional workstation, while a Dell Premium is a high-end consumer laptop.
The three new Dell laptop families
| CES 2025 family | Broad former lineage | Intended role |
|---|---|---|
| Dell | Inspiron | Mainstream consumer laptops for home, school and everyday productivity |
| Dell Pro | Latitude | Business and commercial systems for managed fleets, security, support and durability |
| Dell Pro Max | Precision | Mobile workstations for engineering, CAD, 3D, technical media and professional graphics |
Dell’s announcement describes a broad portfolio direction rather than a perfect one-to-one replacement for every old model. Chassis, configurations and regional availability can differ. Laptop Mag’s CES report documents the family mapping and January 6 announcement.
What Base, Plus and Premium mean
These labels indicate a product’s position within its own family. They are not universal grades across Dell’s entire catalogue.

| Family | Base | Plus | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dell | Entry consumer hardware | Stronger mainstream performance or features | Upscale consumer design, display or materials |
| Dell Pro | Basic business configuration | More performance and options for professional users | Higher-end business design and features |
| Dell Pro Max | Entry professional workstation | More powerful workstation configurations | Highest-end workstation design and component choices |
“Premium” does not necessarily mean the fastest model. In some families it emphasizes thinness, materials or display quality. Conversely, “Base” does not mean unusable: a Pro Max Base can include a powerful processor, professional GPU and upgradeable memory, even if it has a basic screen or heavier chassis.
What Dell actually announced at CES
Dell presented the rebrand alongside redesigned commercial and workstation products, current-generation AI-PC platforms and selected serviceability changes. Intel Core Ultra processors were central to the announcement, with AMD and Qualcomm options expected across the broader portfolio. Dell also promoted more modular designs in selected Pro systems.
The announcement was a roadmap with staggered availability, not the simultaneous launch of every Base, Plus and Premium model. Some Dell Plus laptops were scheduled for February 18, 2025. Dell Pro products were described as arriving in stages from roughly late March or April, depending on model. Base and Premium specifications and prices were not all available on January 6. Why Dell Pro Max is different
Dell Pro Max is the workstation branch, not simply the company’s most luxurious consumer laptop. CES coverage described 14- and 16-inch systems with Intel Core Ultra processors, AMD options across the wider portfolio and NVIDIA professional graphics. The 16-inch model was described as supporting displays up to QHD+ and RTX 2000-class professional graphics in initial configurations.

Serviceability and durability claims
Dell said selected Pro designs use a modular USB-C port that can be replaced without replacing the entire motherboard, and claimed the port is four times more durable than before. It also promoted improved airflow, thermal design, testing and a modular mainboard approach. These are Dell’s manufacturer claims, not independent durability measurements. Dell’s announcement provides the company’s stated design goals.

Dell Pro Max 16 Base: a concrete example
The MC16250 shows why the family name alone is not a specification. Later Dell listings and independent testing describe a configurable 16-inch mobile workstation with the following range:
| Component | Documented options |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core Ultra 5 235H vPro through Core Ultra 9 285H vPro |
| Graphics | Intel Arc integrated graphics, NVIDIA RTX PRO 500, RTX PRO 1000 or RTX PRO 2000 |
| Memory | 16GB, 32GB or 64GB DDR5; user-replaceable in the tested design |
| Storage | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD; user-replaceable in the tested design |
| Displays | 1920×1200 60Hz IPS, 1920×1200 touch IPS or 2560×1600 120Hz IPS |
| Display brightness and gamut | Listed at 300 cd/m²; the base FHD+ panel is 45% NTSC, while QHD+ is listed at 100% sRGB |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, depending on configuration; optional cellular connectivity |
| Ports | Two USB-A, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.0, gigabit Ethernet, MicroSD and 3.5mm audio |
| Battery and adapter | 64Wh four-cell battery and 100W USB-C adapter in the displayed Dell configuration |
These are later configuration and review details, not a claim that every specification was disclosed at CES. The full test and configuration matrix is documented by RTINGS; the official listing is on Dell’s US product page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Pro Max 16’s most important buying warning: the screen
The least expensive FHD+ panel is listed at 45% NTSC. It can be adequate for office work, but it is a poor choice for color-sensitive photography, video, design or visualization. The QHD+ option is sharper and listed at 100% sRGB, making it the sensible minimum for many creative workflows, although 100% sRGB is not the same as a wide-gamut reference display.

- Edge-to-edge clarity: Enjoy crisp, expansive visuals on a 16" screen with up to FHD+ and a 16:10 aspect ratio—delivering a wide, immersive viewing experience.
- All-day comfort: Dell ComfortView Plus helps reduce harmful blue light emissions while preserving true-to-life color, keeping your eyes comfortable even during prolonged screen time.
- Ready for business: Flip between effortless productivity and captivating entertainment on a large, immersive screen powered by Intel Core 7-150U processor and graphics.
- Built for virtual connection: Bring your connections to life with an up-to FHD camera, designed with wide dynamic range and temporal noise reduction to deliver crisp, sharp images, no matter the lighting conditions.
- Adaptive thermals: Built-in technology allows your PC to sense when it's on a stable surface and adjusts its power and thermals to run more efficiently.
Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness, gamut and touch support on the exact configuration. “Pro Max 16” does not identify one fixed screen.
What independent testing found
RTINGS found that appropriately configured Pro Max 16 systems can provide strong CPU and discrete-GPU performance, broad connectivity, user-accessible memory and storage, and minimal thermal throttling in testing. The trade-offs were equally clear:
- The chassis is bulky and fan noise can be high.
- The base FHD+ display is unsuitable for color-critical work; the QHD+ panel is materially better.
- Integrated graphics and professional drivers are a poor substitute for a gaming laptop’s GPU, driver features and variable-refresh support.
- Keyboard, speakers, display refinement and portability were less polished than some similarly priced alternatives.
A workstation designation means professional component and driver options, not necessarily a luxurious screen, quiet acoustics or light travel weight. RTINGS specifically compares the Pro Max 16 with systems such as the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 and Apple MacBook Pro, each of which can be stronger in particular areas.

CES pricing and availability
| Product announcement | Reported CES pricing or timing |
|---|---|
| Dell Plus clamshell | From $999; February 18, 2025 availability was announced for applicable models |
| Dell Plus 2-in-1 | From $1,099; February 18, 2025 availability was announced for applicable models |
| Dell Pro 16 Plus | Reported from $1,649; rollout was staged |
| Base and Premium models | Not all prices or availability were stated at the CES announcement |
Those were announced or reported launch figures, not permanent prices. A Dell US page displayed one Pro Max 16 Base configuration at $1,626.06 in July 2026, reduced from an estimated $2,106.06. That sale price applies to the exact configuration and date, not the entire Pro Max family. Dell pricing varies by country, tax, promotion, processor, graphics, memory, storage, display and support terms.
Which family fits which buyer?
Choose Dell Base or Dell Plus for everyday use
Students, home users and office workers who browse, write, stream, attend calls or run ordinary productivity software should start with Dell. Choose Plus when you need more multitasking performance, a 2-in-1 design or stronger mainstream specifications. Premium is for buyers who value consumer styling, portability and display or material upgrades without needing workstation graphics.
Choose Dell Pro for organizations
Dell Pro is the logical choice for IT-managed fleets, standardized deployments, business security, docking, support and durability requirements. A Pro Base may be more appropriate for a company than a faster consumer Premium laptop because the family’s value lies in management and serviceability as well as components.
Choose Dell Pro Max for professional workloads
Pro Max makes sense when you need professional GPU options, CAD, engineering, 3D, simulation, technical media, local AI development or upgradeable memory and storage. Select the processor, GPU, RAM and display for the application rather than buying on the word “workstation” alone.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When to avoid Pro Max
- You mainly browse, write, stream or join video calls.
- Travel weight, quiet operation and battery life matter more than sustained workstation performance.
- You want gaming-first graphics drivers, variable refresh and gaming features.
- You expect premium speakers, keyboard feel and display quality in every configuration.
How the AI-PC label affects the decision
An NPU can accelerate compatible local AI features, but it does not automatically improve every workload. NPU performance is separate from CPU and GPU performance, and professional AI or machine-learning applications may depend primarily on a discrete GPU, memory capacity and software support. Verify the applications you use instead of treating “AI PC” as a performance guarantee.
How to buy without being misled by the name
- Identify the family first: consumer Dell, business Dell Pro or workstation Dell Pro Max.
- Choose the tier according to the family’s role, not as a universal speed ranking.
- Record the exact CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, display resolution, gamut and wireless options.
- For creative work, reject the 45% NTSC FHD+ panel and price the QHD+ option.
- Compare the complete configured price, country, tax, shipping, warranty and support terms.
- For business purchases, check fleet management, onsite service, security and deployment requirements.
- For gaming, compare a purpose-built gaming laptop rather than assuming RTX PRO graphics are equivalent.
Bottom line on Dell’s 2025 rebrand
Dell’s CES 2025 system is a useful map, but it did not make laptop buying one-dimensional. The family name tells you who the machine is for; Base, Plus or Premium indicates its position within that family; the exact configuration determines the real performance and experience. Dell is the everyday line, Dell Pro is the managed-business line and Dell Pro Max is the workstation line. For the Pro Max 16 in particular, the display choice, GPU, memory and chassis trade-offs matter more than the badge.
