Dell Chromebook Reset: Which Reset Should You Use?

A Dell Chromebook reset might mean a hardware restart, a Powerwash, or ChromeOS recovery. Choose the right procedure and understand what local data it erases first.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Dell Chromebook that is acting up, start by turning it off and back on. If that does not help, choose the procedure that matches the problem: a hardware reset restarts Chromebook hardware, Powerwash returns the device to factory settings and erases local user data, and ChromeOS recovery reinstalls the operating system and erases the local drive. Back up files before Powerwash or recovery, and check instructions for your exact Dell model if a general key sequence does not work.

Choose the right kind of Dell Chromebook reset

“Reset” can mean three different things on a Chromebook. Use the least destructive option that fits the problem.

Action When to use it What it does to local data What you need
Restart The Chromebook is usable and you want to try a basic fix first. Does not perform a factory reset. Ability to turn the Chromebook off and back on.
Hardware reset Basic troubleshooting has not helped and the keyboard, touchpad, or other hardware behavior may be involved. May delete some files in Downloads. Usually the Refresh and Power keys; some devices use another method.
Powerwash (factory reset) A profile or settings problem persists, or you are preparing to change the device’s owner. Erases local user data, including Downloads, settings, apps, and files. Ability to sign out and use the keyboard shortcut.
ChromeOS recovery There is a serious operating-system problem, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message, or other troubleshooting has failed. Permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Recovery mode; internet recovery on some newer devices or USB recovery media.

Google’s general procedures cover Chromebooks, not every Dell model or keyboard layout. If a sequence below does not work, consult the documentation for the exact Dell model.

Restart before trying a reset

If the Chromebook still starts, turn it off and then back on before moving to a more involved fix. Google recommends trying a restart before a factory reset when the device can still be used. If the issue continues, use Google’s symptom-based hardware and system troubleshooting guidance to check for a relevant next step.

How to hardware reset a Dell Chromebook

A hardware reset, also called a hard reset, restarts Chromebook hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad. It is not a factory reset, but Google warns that it may delete some files in Downloads, so do not assume every local file is safe.

  1. Turn off the Chromebook.
  2. Hold Refresh and tap Power.
  3. Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.

Google describes alternate key sequences and notes that some devices require special methods. Check the instructions for your exact Dell model if this sequence does not work. See Google’s hardware reset instructions for the general procedure.

How to Powerwash a Dell Chromebook

Powerwash resets the Chromebook to factory settings. Use it for a persistent profile or settings problem, or before handing the device to a new owner, after trying lower-impact steps. It removes local user data from the Chromebook’s hard drive, including files in Downloads, settings, apps, and other files. Back up local files to Google Drive or external storage and sync information and settings first. Files stored in Google Drive or on external storage are not deleted by the factory reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign out of the Chromebook.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
  3. Select Restart.
  4. When prompted, select Powerwash, then Continue.
  5. Follow the onscreen setup steps. The account used after the reset becomes the device’s owner account.

Google’s factory reset instructions explain the standard process. Work- or school-managed Chromebooks cannot ordinarily be factory reset by users; contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass management.

When and how to recover ChromeOS

Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. Reserve it for serious operating-system problems, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message, or when other troubleshooting has failed. It permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files, so back up first if the device can still be accessed.

Enter recovery mode

  1. Disconnect accessories connected to the Chromebook.
  2. Hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power.
  3. Release Power, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.

Some models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. If the general sequence fails, check the documentation for your exact model. Google’s recovery guidance covers entry to recovery mode and the recovery process.

  • Dimensions: (H x W x D): 0.8 x 12 x 8.2 inches, Weight: 2.9 lbs

Choose internet recovery or USB recovery media

On newer Chromebooks, choose recovery over an internet connection if that option appears. If it is unavailable, create recovery media on another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer using Chrome and the Chromebook Recovery Utility. The recovery utility asks for the affected Chromebook’s model number; select the correct model rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • USB recovery requires a drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
  • Creating recovery media erases the USB drive.
  • A USB drive is needed only for the external-media route; it is not needed for Powerwash or a hardware reset.

Check management and device support before recovery

If the Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator for recovery help. An administrator may need to wipe and re-enroll the device.

Some older Chromebooks may no longer receive updates, and recovery may not be possible for them. Eligibility depends on the exact model; “Dell Chromebook” alone does not establish a support end date. To check the ChromeOS version and look for updates, open Settings → About ChromeOS. Google explains update eligibility in its ChromeOS update guidance.

When to contact Dell or an administrator

For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, contact the administrator before attempting a factory reset or recovery. For a personal device, follow Google’s troubleshooting steps for the specific symptom; if they do not solve a charging, boot, update, or hardware problem, Google advises contacting the Chromebook manufacturer.
