A “delivery drone air traffic controller” would most likely coordinate low-altitude drone traffic through UAS Traffic Management (UTM)—a developing system built around shared digital information and automated coordination. It is not simply a conventional FAA air traffic controller speaking by radio to every delivery drone pilot. UTM is still taking shape, and no standardized job description, credential, salary or hiring path for this title has been established.
What does a delivery drone air traffic controller do?
The title points toward a future-facing coordination role in UTM, the FAA-described ecosystem for safely managing unmanned aircraft at low altitudes. UTM functions include flight planning, authorization, surveillance and conflict management, with package delivery among the increasingly complex operations it is intended to support. The FAA’s UTM overview describes the system and its goals.

A person working in a related role might monitor shared airspace information, review planned routes and constraints, and support conflict management through digital systems. Those are reasonable inferences from UTM’s documented functions—not a confirmed occupation or official list of duties. The FAA and NASA materials do not establish a standardized employer title or role-specific competency requirements.

How is UTM different from conventional air traffic control?
UTM is separate from, but complementary to, conventional air traffic services. Rather than relying on an FAA controller to provide positive ATC services to each drone, coordination is designed to happen primarily through a distributed network of automated systems and application programming interfaces (APIs). Operators manage their flights within real-time FAA airspace constraints.

NASA likewise describes digital sharing of planned flight details. It says trusted automation is needed for routine beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, because pilots and controllers will not be able to see every aircraft in high-volume drone traffic. Its UTM explainer addresses the question “What is Unmanned Aircraft Systems Traffic Management?” and how a major change to airspace could affect people and safety.
Automation does not transfer operational responsibility to a hypothetical coordinator: drone operators remain responsible for safe operations within FAA constraints. A human role, if employers create one, could therefore be more about oversight, exception handling and coordination than issuing routine voice clearances to individual pilots.

What might the work look like?
Because no standardized job description exists, the following are potential work areas inferred from UTM’s system functions rather than confirmed duties:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Airspace information: Monitor shared information about planned flights and applicable constraints.
- Route coordination: Work with flight plans and changing conditions across a distributed system.
- Conflict management: Support detection and resolution processes, potentially alongside automated tools.
- Operational coordination: Communicate with operators or service providers when information or intervention is needed.
The balance between human judgment and automation will depend on the operator, service provider, system design and regulatory environment. The available FAA and NASA descriptions do not settle that division of work.

What is the current U.S. regulatory situation?
Many small-drone operations can be conducted under the FAA’s Small UAS Rule, Part 107; more complex operations may require additional certification or approval. The FAA’s commercial drone operations guidance explains that distinction.
Scaling routine low-altitude BVLOS flights is a separate regulatory challenge. The FAA has proposed a performance-based BVLOS rule intended to support these operations and third-party services, including UTM, with package delivery among the contemplated uses. It is a proposal, not a final rule. See the FAA’s BVLOS rulemaking announcement for its status and scope.

NASA’s June 2026 package-delivery article describes the foundation laid by UTM research. NASA Advanced Air Mobility mission integration manager Parimal Kopardekar said: “NASA’s pioneering work on UTM, in collaboration with the FAA and industry, set the stage for safe and scalable small drone flights below 400 feet.” That statement concerns the development of UTM; it does not announce a specific occupation or hiring pathway. NASA’s package-delivery article provides the context.

That is not established. The FAA has a defined hiring and training pathway for conventional air traffic controllers, including eligibility criteria, several months of Academy training, and another two to three years of classroom and on-the-job training after Academy graduation. Those requirements apply to conventional ATC; they are not evidence that a future UTM coordinator must have the same credentials. Details are on the FAA’s air traffic controller careers page.

Studying for a Part 107 remote pilot certificate can help someone understand small-drone operations, but a study aid or certificate is not an air traffic controller qualification and does not establish eligibility for a future UTM job. The actual qualifications, if employers formalize this work, will depend on the role and employer.
How to assess a future job posting
When a company advertises a drone-traffic role, look beyond the title. These distinctions reveal what the work actually entails:
- Regulatory ATC or UTM: Is the role part of air traffic services, or does it support an operator or UTM service provider?
- VLOS or BVLOS: Are flights within visual line of sight, or do they operate beyond it?
- Human or automated coordination: Does the person make operational decisions, monitor automated systems, or handle exceptions?
- Responsibility: Who is accountable for the aircraft’s safe operation?
- Approvals: Which certifications, authorizations or regulatory permissions does the operation require?
These questions matter because the label “air traffic controller” can imply a conventional ATC role even when the work is actually digital UTM coordination.

The underlying need—coordinating larger numbers of low-altitude drone flights—is real, and the FAA and NASA describe UTM as a way to support safe, scalable operations. But “delivery drone air traffic controller” remains a future-facing label, not a verified standardized occupation. The official material cited here does not provide an occupation-specific salary, job count, credential or established hiring route.
