Sometimes. If you deleted a conversation in Samsung Messages, check its Trash first: Samsung says deleted messages can be restored there within 30 days. If it is not there, recovery depends on whether a backup made before deletion contains the messages. In Google Messages, check Archived in case the conversation was archived; Samsung says deleted Google Messages texts are permanently deleted.
First, identify the messaging app and what happened to the conversation
Samsung Messages and Google Messages have different recovery paths. Check which app you used before trying a restore. Also distinguish a deleted conversation from an archived one: archiving hides a conversation without deleting it.

- Google Messages: Check Archived if the conversation may have been archived. Samsung says archived conversations can be unarchived, but texts deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered through that app. See Samsung’s guidance on recovering deleted Galaxy messages.
- Samsung Messages: Check Trash. If the message is no longer there, look for a backup made before deletion.
Check Samsung Messages Trash
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options, then Trash.
- Select the message and choose Restore.
Samsung states that messages can be restored from Trash within 30 days. The Trash feature may be unavailable or disabled in some configurations, and menus can vary by device or software version. Samsung’s instructions are on its Samsung Messages app support page.

If Trash has no copy, check for a backup made before deletion
A backup can help only if it contains the missing messages. Check its date and contents where possible: a backup made after deletion may not include them. Samsung documents three relevant restore routes.

Samsung Cloud
If a Samsung Cloud backup includes the messages and predates deletion, use Samsung’s restore process to bring back the backed-up messages. A backup cannot restore messages it never contained. See Samsung’s deleted-message guidance and its backup and restore instructions.
Google account backup
Samsung says restoring a Google account backup happens during setup on a new or reset phone, not as an ordinary in-place restore from device settings. Before resetting or changing devices, confirm that the relevant backup exists and understand what the setup restore will involve. Samsung’s backup and restore guide explains the process.

Smart Switch backup
Smart Switch can restore a backup previously saved to a PC, Mac, or external storage. For a USB flash drive or SSD, connect the storage to the phone; an OTG adapter may be needed, depending on the phone and storage connection. The adapter only connects the storage—it does not recover messages without a valid backup.
Samsung says messages in computer backup files cannot be viewed on the computer; they can be read after the backup is transferred to a phone. See Samsung’s Smart Switch message backup and restore guidance.

When no Trash copy or prior backup exists
The official Samsung guidance cited here does not establish that third-party recovery software can reliably retrieve permanently deleted messages without a backup. Do not treat a recovery app, adapter, or cable as a substitute for a Trash copy or a backup that contains the texts.
